The curriculum emphasizes politics and the media, social documentary, ideology and the media, and discourses of race, class, and gender in the media. This position is to teach five courses per academic year, including introductory courses in Media and Society, as well as courses in media theory, cultural studies and the media, and/or aspects of television and society, depending on the candidate's areas of interest and professional development. Hobart and William Smith is embarking on a period of increasing the available tenure lines; hence, there is a possibility that this line will convert to a permanent position. We will begin interviewing the first week of April and will make a final decision at the end of April. Ph.D. preferred, but we will consider ABDs who are close to finishing the dissertation. In conjunction with fol comments, it has also been my experience that the "business rules" I previously mentioned go hand-in-hand with active on-line moderation and facilitation--akin to a "community manager." The "business rules" cannot stand alone or they really lose their value. Note that I say moderation & facilitation, not direct control. And the meandering is not completely forbidden, but rather "contained" within some soft boundaries. The "community manager" can be a nearly full time job. Something to consider. It's like attending a committee meeting with a weak chairman who lets discussion meander indefinitely ... such meetings are exhausting. So is keeping up with posts. Somewhere along the line, something else has to be sacrificed to do it. But they're fascinating and informing, so I keep reading ... lol Here's to a compationate victory, leading to a long, agreeable peace. Keith

Thanks Aldon, for bringing up the topic of blogs and pointing to some of the key blogs for those interested in the war. From Internet researchers, I would hope to see more work on this particular use of the medium. I know some projects are starting up (e.g. see http://www.onblogs.org ) but I think more work is needed. For one thing, I think it would be really helpful to get some data on how many Internet users out there even know what a blog is and how many read one/more, and then see how many actually maintain one. To those of us who've gotten into blogging - reading and writing, or just reading them frequently - it sometimes seems the whole world is blogging. But then I realize that most people don't even know what the word means and the friends who do only do so b/c I'm telling them about blog related info all the time. (I also have a miniscule amount of survey data that suggest average users don't know what "Weblog" means.) There's some work out there specifically about blogging and the war. I suspect Kara Kerwin (http://www.karakerwin.net ) of SUNY-Buffalo hasn't added to this thread b/c she's busy collecting data for her current project (we exchanged emails at 3am last night as she was very much in the midst of collecting data for her blog & war related research). There are many many blogs out there, many of them very interesting. I'll just add two to the list both of which have lots of political commentary although not just about the war: Alas, a blog at http://www.amptoons.com/blog Body and Soul at http://bodyandsoul.blogspot.com Once you're on a blog, you can follow links from there to find others. Blogs have been an essential source of information for me during recent political events. They point to interesting material that the mainstream media do not cover and they allow for conversations. In the past 24 hrs I've seen several bloggers post info on what's been happening in their area or what sources of info they're turning to these days, both issues that address David's questions. I highly recommend joining in on the blogging phenomenon, whether as a participant, as a researcher or both. Colleagues, I would begrudge none their right to air their opinion about Operation Iraqi Freedom. In any traditional classroom setting this week at my institution, everything tends to relate to the war. My affiliation explains why this is so, although I would bet most institutions are finding similar trends. This seems to be natural and healthy. The questions on what we should expect from this list--as a community medium--are important. I for one, would like to ensure that the on-list discussion maintain a relationship to "internet research," which in and of itself is broad and shifting in definition, but clearly relates to the internet and associated media. Any issue that has a triangular relationship with "internet research" seems to me to be fair game. For example, how the internet is used as a medium of war opinionmaking is "in." I would also say that the fact that we are using the internet for our discussion doesn't qualify everything as "in." It would be a useful enterprise, perhaps over the summer period to crunch through what we expect from aoir as a "community" and how we expect to use email/web/internet media as tools to that end. In other on-line communities I have participated in, the communities generally had a set of "business rules" roughly governing online behavior and themes. This would indeed be useful in two ways, since we could "research," discuss, and contemplate the roles and functions and behaviors of online communities in the process. On another note, I would like all to know, from a professional warrior's point of view, that I love peace as much as anyone. I just don't believe peace at all costs is wise. I also would like to point out that few nations or their armed forces go to such great lengths to avoid harming noncombatants and even reasonably innocent erstwhile combatants (as in Saddam's conscripted Army) in war as the U.S. does. I think this is exceptionally humane, lofty, and absolutely necessary. Would it be that one day we could even achieve a priority that "collateral" human harm is above even that of our own men & women of the armed forces. This is an even worthier goal. As far as the relationship to the internet goes, it is the internet (TCP/IP) systems that are now deployed with our armed forces that enable them to achieve unique speed (compression of time), precision (compression of space), and adaptability (expansion of organizational behavioral potential), without which we could not continue to reduce the human cost of armed conflict. ("in") There is indeed also political-psychological dimension of the war, partially playing out via the internet. And this is another topic of continued worthy discussion. Cincinnati is unproudly as conservative as Seattle is liberal for reasons I don't want to go into (we can start with race relations and a proactive police force though). Nevertheless there have been war protests here, the local independent weekly is full of outrage, folks on campus seem as anti-war as ambivalent (only a few people I've talked with are solidly hawk, and they are undergraduates who haven't experienced war). What I find uncomfortable in the mainstream media is how quickly a chilling effect has settled in. Even those democratic senators speaking out about Bush's lip service at "diplomacy" a few days ago likely will quiet down now. The press has to cover the events and not be perceived as unpatriotic. But if anyone is likely to kill or be responsible for the death of Americans now, it's Bush. And those servicemen and women (and innocents, if there are terrorist retaliations) have extended families back home who want to believe in the president and feel pride in their efforts on behalf of the country.* Those families are voters. So it will be interesting to see who in Washington is still willing to speak up, even this time next week. For those of you who are interested in the Canadian/US experience with broadband Internet, here are some comparative OECD stats on BB internet penetration: The following tables show the number of broadband subscribers for 2000, 2001 and June 2002 in both Canada and the US. as well as total broadband subscribers per 100 inhabitants and growth rates. The data clearly show that Canada has a significant lead over the U.S. in broadband penetration and that growth is rapid in both countries.
