How do you use the Web for research?

The company I work for is working closely with the developers of a new Web-browser called Browse3D. One of the many claims we make is that it makes Web surfing and searching 'more efficient' because it visually shows where you are, where you were and where you can go on the Web. Often, we'd have people asking what we mean by 'more efficient' and there was no quantitative explanation for that. Doing a demo would prove it but still, we didn't have numbers to back up the claim. I recently did a quick test taking a specific task (going to a list of 30 newspapers on the Web and visiting the cover of each to determine if there were ads) and doing it with a 'regular' browser (IE) and also with our product. It took 8 minutes versus 6. 25% time saving to do the same task. Now, we'd like to do more tests like that but with a research/education spin. Take typical ways the Web can be used in research and see if and how using Browse3D will save time and make the task easier. If you can provide examples of 'tasks' or usages of the Web that are typical of what you do for research, it would be greatly appreciated. Internet Health Information

In response to the earlier queries about accuracy of medical information on the net, let me immodestly suggest Rice, R.E. & Katz, J.E. (Eds.) (2001). The Internet and Health Communication: Experiences and Expectations. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage. The first, long review chapter covers this topic as of late 2000. Even then there were some very good studies (some reported in JAMA) on this issue. Some other chapters also discuss accuracy and validity, as well as web design evaluations, of online health sites. ============================================================ Ronald E. Dialogue on CA Education Master Plan

Hello all, I'm new to this list and wanted to share information on a project that might be of interest to some researchers. Information Renaissance, a non-profit non-partisan organization, produces an online public policy dialogues. From June 3-14 we will be conducting a dialogue on the draft Master Plan for California's Kindergarten-University education. The plan is being developed by an 18 member Joint Legislative Committee and is based on the recommendations of seven working groups that have involved over 300 people during the last year. This is the first time a Master Plan for the state's education has been created. The two-week moderated dialogue will focus on selected recommendations in the draft plan. Each day a panel of policy and subject experts will join the discussion. Members of the Joint Committee, Working Groups and representatives of the Governors' office, the Department of Education and the Board of Education are being invited to join the dialogue. Participants are being recruited through many channels-online and traditional media. We are announcing the discussion through the state League of Women Voters, PTA, major education organizations, and many other groups. Staff for the Joint Committee is handling relations with the press. We anticipate there will be a great deal of interest in the dialogue. A registration form will gather demographics on participants. Discussion summaries will provide an overview of the main points covered each day. Daily survey forms based on the summaries will capture the views of the larger group, both discussants and observers. Info Ren has conducted six similar dialogues, on the E-Rate, Social Security Reform, Money and Politics, and two for the U.S. EPA. The last discussion for the US EPA was on the agency's revision of its Public Involvement Policy. EPA recently won an E-Gov 2002 Explorer Award in recognition of that effort. The dialogue on the CA Education Master Plan will be a great opportunity to learn more about online communication from the perspectives of leadership and collaboration, public policy, public participation, group dynamics, etc. The Web site will be open after May 1st: http://www.network-democracy.org/camp Please contact me if you are interested in more information about the dialogue for research purposes. Legitimacy of E-Health Medical Information

Has anybody researched the area of legitimacy of medical information in online healthcare support communities? An example of this would be analyzing online cancer newsgroups to a) see the amount of medical information or advice that is disseminated, b) see who is providing advice or medical information, and c) review the responses and any actions that result from this advice. I'm beginning a small project on this and it would be great to know if anybody out there has done similar stuff or knows of any literature in the area. Cheers, Steve
