You could look at the Three Pomegranate Network (Armenia). I think there is an evaluation done by Joanne Capper of an education project which they run to be found on the infoDev web site. As I recall they have funding from the Narod Foundation.
There was a "Knowledge Assessment" done for El Salvador with World Bank sponsorship, which looked at the use of the Internet to support linkages with the Salvadoran expatriate community. Michel Menou was involved I think.
You might look at the Irish Emigrant and the Irish Research Scientists Association and IrishAbroad.com as examples of the use of the Internet by and for the Irish diaspora community.
There is shortly to be published a seminar on ICTs in Africa sponsored by the National Intelligence Council last October which has annecdotal information on the effect of the Internet communication of West Africans in their home country's elections.

Dear all
I'm going to do a literature review on synchronous CMC research that takes a rhetorical or discourse analysis approach. If you happen to come across any relevant articles/resources, please advise. Thank you.

(1) Don't worry about the MFA; if you apply to the right program,
they'll be itching to have you and your experience that your MFA has
offered you. I speak as one who has an MFA in poetry and who now is in a
PhD program studying new media. Granted, I'd done some electronic work
while getting my MFA, but everyone is always intrigued when I start
talking about a field other than Rhet/Comp, which is the area that many
of our grads come from.
(2) As for programs, I just *have* to recommend the one I'm currently
in: Rhetoric and Technical Communication in the Humanities Dept. at
Michigan Technological University <http://www.hu.mtu.edu>. Right now,
I'm taking a class with Anne Wysocki on new media and we're reading a
range of books (both theoretical and practical, but focusing more on the
theory-side of things) and creating our own new media works
<http://www.hu.mtu.edu/~awysocki/courses/HU6112-S02/page0.html>. And,
being in a Humanities department offers so many possibilities for
cross-disciplinary work/research, with scholars in the field of cultural
studies, film studies, new media, rhet/comp, rhetoric, communication,
etc. etc., (even for those of us with an MFA who feel we may not be as
theoretically prepared while our practical experience speaks loads more
than the MAs of others students ;)
In any case, Michigan Tech rocks. I'd love to talk about it more. If
anyone wants to know more about our program, email me off-list. We also
have a summer institute, if you just want to get a taste of things MTU
and interactive/new media design: http://www.hu.mtu.edu/ciwic.

Dear AOIR colleagues,
I'm seeking to contact researchers focusing on how journalists report
Internet statistics. Is there a body of work here to link to? Thank you, B.
Lentz (UT-Austin)
Folks,
I want to thank the at least a dozen people who sent me great info about
diasporas and the Net today. I will summarize it when I get a chance,
which may not be till March, because of 2 deadlines.
The best story I heard was about the guy giving a Powerpoint talk at a
major US grad university that is wireless equipped, when his mother's
babytalk chat to her little son popped up in an Instant Messaging window
to the amusement of all.
As you may have gathered, I am pushing towards finishing a review piece.
I have a few other queries for info?
1. I'd appreciate leads into IM and SMS. Not just prevalence, and who is
doing it for what. Both adolescent and adult based. And special kinds of
speech communities.
2. Anything about teens' use of the Net to engage in community would also
be appreciated -- IM, email, chat, Usenet, etc.
3. I have heard that Internet phone is one of the most commonly used Net
things in the developing world. Is this true, and if it is, where is it
documented and analyzed.
As for diasporas, when I become post-deadline, I will digest this for AOIR
list, so no need to post your private messages to the list.

En passant, the lovely Monsoon Wedding has some nice offhand references to
this, as the families come from Houston, Dubai, etc. for a Delhi wedding.
Pls reply to me personally, and I will then summarize for the list.
