list of lists: a new A(o)IR project

Members of A(o)IR, INTERNET RESEARCH LIST OF LISTS As a service to members of the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) and to the members of the greater Internet and cyberculture community, Matthew Allen, Ulla Bunz, and David Silver are compiling a 'list of lists' for listserves, mailing lists, and discussion boards devoted to the study of the Internet and new media. This project, sponsored by the AoIR Executive Board, is by definition dynamic and participatory. We strongly encourage your suggestions, as the diversity and quality of our archive can only grow out of our combined efforts. The purpose of the project is to provide a comprehensive index of mailing lists and online forums. Contributions from all academic or non-academic origins and from all over the world are welcome, as long as the content of the list is devoted to the study of the Internet and new media. The 'list of lists' will include the name of the list, the list moderator/s (if any), and instructions on how to subscribe to the list. Further, we will include a more in-depth annotation that describes, if available: nature of the list (community driven discussion or moderator driven information service); dominant discipline content relates to (if any); main issues of Internet research the list addresses itself to. Further, when available, we will include additional details such as frequency of posts, digest and archive options, and moderation strategies. Admittedly, this is a big project. Ideally, it will be *member-generated* and for that reason we wish to ask all AIR-L members to take a brief moment and look over the following questions. Help us out by emailing your responses to David Silver <dsilver(a)u.washington.edu>. (a) Do you run or help to run any lists that are relevant to studying and researching the Internet? (b) Please list listserves to which you subscribe that are relevant to studying and researching the Internet. (c) Out of the ones listed above and aside from air-l, which list or lists would you recommend as the most important ones to be subscribed to for studying and researching the Internet? Please provide a very brief statement about why it/they is/are the most important. Upon collecting your responses, we will compile the information and create a Web site for the larger community. This will be an ongoing project, so please continue to contribute new lists as you become aware of them. We thank you for your time and interest. >What's needed is for listservs to have a different sort of Reply command, You know, a halfway solutiojn wouldn't be that hard to write. Small script which reads incoming listserv messages. Counts the number of lines that begin with ">". Counts the number of lines that don't. If the former is, say, at least double the latter, then refuse the message with an automated response mailed back to the sender. Nope, doesn't take care of those whose e-mail programs don't insert quote marks. Which surely needs fancier stuff. cheers Bram --

flamewars, definitions and frequency

Researching interaction norms on nordic discussion lists, my impression is that the occurance of flame wars is.. a) dependent on the general acceptance of flaming as an activity on the list b) dependent on if the list is moderated, and whether the moderator accept insulting behaviour or not, for how far a flame war can actually develop before participants are reprimanded or excluded from list. What I think is that flame wars was a more accepted part of earlier net-culture, and in any case where and how much it happens on a specific list is highly conextual, related to the lists purpose, the list administrator as well as the participants' cultural background, gender, age, relations to each other etc. I would guess that flame wars are 200% more likely to take place on an unmoderated usenet-group, where participants are unrelated in other parts of their life, international (north-american predominated),with f ex political subjects, and with young, internet-experienced, college-males than in a moderated distributionlist, where participants can be likely to meet in other mediated or un-mediated contexts (like in a small country, a professional context, or subcultures), with a more heterogenous group of participants concerning internet-experience, age, nationality and gender. Some usenet-lists are in themselves dedicated to the "art of flaming" as some of its participants characterize this acivity, but this then would signalize that activity of flaming would be considered more as a game and playing with words rather than an outburst of anger on a topic-oriented list. In the latter matter (wow..) the bottomline would be if the hegemonic discussion norms on the list include harassing other list members as an individual right - or if it on the contrary is considered to be an argumentation strategy that is unwanted on a group level. As mentioned this is related to why the people are at the list in the first place (social purposes like playing/wasting time as contrary to a very informative purpose for instance), the social interactional purpose (work-related interaction, social, political, related to private-life - or a mix) - and an important aspect; what is considered as proper behaviour in these different communicative genres by the majority of the participants (in many of my nordic lists f ex, with a social democratic cultural background valuing equality, face threatening behaviour like flaming is often negatively valued). My impression is that the traditional "flame-war" as a "fun" or time-wasting net-activity is becoming more and more marginalized as the group of net-users has become more and more diverse; most people don't have the time or interest to spend hours in front of the screen insulting other people. At the same time, to what degree personal harassment is accepted as an argumentation strategy - and what kinds - varies highly. I think making a statistical overview of this would be difficult without clearly defining what kinds of activities the term itself is referring to. Personal insults? Going on for how long? With the purpose of fun/entertainment? Experienced as fun/entertainment? With which parts of the group participating in these "wars"? With a moderator supporting and encouraging them or putting them off at an early stage? ...which again point towards the need for qualitative analysis to be able to answer the question... (even though more specified, a more statistical approach would be a helpful frame to use in the qualitative analyses) But I guess that's what Robert was after when he asked the question... I've seen some happen here and there, but those with explicit name calling (in my personal observation) seem limited to Usenet and don't much happen on the mailinglists I frequent. Personally I think I've never been a participant in a flamewar, even though as a list moderator I've had to solve some thorny issues... maybe because I don't hit send immediately, even when I feel miffed. Brenda Laurel, designer of the Rockett computer game series with Purple Moon will speak twice at Indiana University in Bloomington this Sunday and Monday. On Sunday, January 13th from 4:30-6 p.m. Brenda will talk in the auditorium in the education building at 201 North Rose Ave. in Bloomington. Her talk will be on Children and Story Space. On Monday, January 14th from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Whittenberger Auditorium in the Indiana Memorial Union she will speak on the topic of Gender and Technology Research. Brenda Laurel is a designer, researcher and writer. Her work focuses on interactive narrative, human-computer interaction, and cultural aspects of technology. Her career in human-computer interaction spans over twenty years. She holds an M.F.A. and Ph.D. in theatre from the Ohio State University. Brenda was one of the founding Members of the research staff at Interval Corporation in Palo Alto, California, where she coordinated research activities exploring gender and technology, and where she co-produced and directed the Placeholder Virtual project. She was also one of the founders and VP/Design of a spin-off company from Interval - Purple Moon - formed to market products based on this research. Mattel acquired Purple Moon in 1999. In 1990 she co-founded Telepresence Research, Inc. to develop virtual reality and remote presence technology and applications. She has worked as a software designer, producer, and researcher for companies including Atari, Activision, and Apple. Brenda Laurel is the author of the Utopian Entrepreneur [MIT Press 2001] and Computers as Theatre [Addison-Wesley 1991; 2nd edition 1993], Brenda is also the editor of the Art of Human-Computer Interface Design [Addison-Wesley 1990] and a collection of essays entitled Severed Heads.
