As a candidate I would: - Get more non-academic members involved - Spread the organization into Europe, Asia and Australia - Get a high quality content list up, next to the Air-l list about methodologies of Internet research - Open a dialogue with the Usability experts and their particular discourse and practice - Encourage to bridge academic work and similar research done in the field of new media culture/arts - Diversity the working definition of 'Internet research' - Encourage the study into social networks and alternative models for global Internet governance (beyond the ICANN debate) My bio: Geert Lovink is a media theorist and Internet critic. He is an organizer of numerous conferences, online forums, publications and projects such as community Internet providers, mailinglists and temporary media laboratories. Over the last two decades he has lived and worked in Berlin, Budapest, throughout Central and Eastern Europe and Japan, teaching media theory and supporting independent media and new media culture. He is a member of the theory association Adilkno, from which two books have appeared in English translation: Cracking the Movement (1994) and The Media Archive (1998). In 1995, he co-founded the international mailinglist Nettime, from which material was brought together in the Readme! anthology (1999). His decade long collaboration with Dutch designer Mieke Gerritzen is documented in Catalogue of Strategies (2001). In 2002 MIT Press will publish two of his books: Uncanny Networks, collected interviews with media theorists and artists and Dark Fiber, a study on critical Internet culture. Suggestion: Job Board

Hi all! While trying to put my platform into words I have had another idea that I did not include in my blurb, because I think we might be able to make this happen even for the upcoming Aoir 2.0 conference. It would require very little effort from each of us, but could have great potential outcome. I don't think we had this here in Lawrence, so I'm suggesting to make a job board for the conference in Minneapolis. Each of you whose university/school/department has a job announced that could be of interest to an Internet Researcher could bring a one-page ad and post it on the job board. The effort from the conference organizers would entail making/finding a board (if you let them know you intend to bring a posting they can plan), and finding a place to stand the board. I think this would be a great opportunity to become aware of Internet related jobs in other academic areas and countries, both for graduate students and for faculty looking to re-locate. Thinking about how the Internet and other information and communiations technologies affect the economy of symbols? As additional food for thought, the following paper is available at http://www.galbithink.org : A New Account of Personalization and Effective Communication To contribute to understanding of information economies of daily life, this paper explores over time given names of a large number of persons. Analysts since at least the 1940s have both condemned and praised mass media as a source of common culture or shared symbolic experiences. Names, however, indicate a large, long-term decline in shared symbolic experience, a decline that the growth of mass media does not appear to have affected significantly. Study of names also shows that action and personal relationships, along with time horizon, are central aspects of effective communication across a large population. The observed preference for personalization over the past two centuries and the importance of action and personal relationships to effective communication are aspects of information economies that are likely to have continuing significance for industry developments, economic statistics, and public policy. ―--------------------- Comments and suggestions welcomed.

Hello, all-- The slate of nominees contains many excellent candidates so far. Nominated by another member of our group for an open council seat, I decided to put my bio on this list too. An idea is to make use of all the nominees for future committees and projects. thanks, andrea Andrea Baker, Ohio University bakera(a)ohiou.edu open seat nominee Research about Cyberspace: Presented papers and wrote published articles from an ongoing, long-term study of people who become couples after meeting online, 1997-present. Interested in ethical issues in online research, and methodologies of studying online communications. Previously followed group efforts to pass and defeat the Communications Decency Act. Online Activities: Host of Life Online, a discussion forum at Howard Rheingold's Brainstorms and of the Culture forum at the Utne Café. Teach distance education classes at the undergraduate level since 1998. A(O)IR: For first conference 1.0, organized a panel of two psychologists and a sociologist on "Online Relationships", and moderated a panel including an anthropologist, a sociologist and a psychologist from Spain on, "Discourse of Chat". For IR 2.0 will present how online couples communicate, and attend pre-conference workshop on designing web research. Upcoming Call for Papers: Organizer and moderator of open session, "The Internet and Society", American Sociological Association, Chicago, IL, 2002. Deadline for submitted papers, January 10, 2002. Goals: (1) To further ties to other disciplines, making sure announcements of A(O)IR's conferences go into newsletters of national and international associations, including library science, linguistics, and computer technology, in addition to the traditional social sciences and humanities. (2) To foster more participation among the applied specialists and activists who create and maintain online social networks in business, in local communities, and in political arenas. Following the other accounts of nominees is hard business indeed! In any case, I'm deeply flattered to be nominated to an Open Seat by Nancy Baym. Some particulars: My publications are in ethics(interdisciplinary, East/West), hypertext and democratization, history of philosophy, Continental philosophy, feminist biblical studies, and philosophical perspectives on CMC. I've edited two volumes on computer-mediated communication - the second with Fay Sudweeks. With Fay Sudweeks, I've co-chaired two international and interdisciplinary conferences on "Cultural Attitudes towards Technology and Communication" (CATaC). I've given invited lectures at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Paderborn (Germany), the Open University (Milton Keynes, UK), Ohio University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. I¹ve lived abroad for three years (Germany, Switzerland, France), as well as traveled through (what was Eastern) Europe, the Middle East, and Turkey. I've served on the Board of Directors of ASIANetwork, with specific responsibilities for CMC-related projects and policies. This past year I've served as Chair of the AoIR ethics working committee. It has been extraordinary to see what an international and interdisciplinary group of researchers, scholars, and philosophers can discern regarding the many thorny ethical problems occasioned by Internet research. This experience has convinced me yet again of the value of interdisciplinary/ international discussion, which I take to be one of the primary benefits of AoIR. My interests are helping AoIR to continue to grow and thereby enrich the possibilities for international/interdisciplinary dialogue - dialogues which, in many cases, promise to provide needed insight and direction in our understanding of CMC technologies and their multiple uses both locally and globally. greetings! I am about to embark on the project of writing my thesis on the topic of the sociotechnical implications of file sharing and the .mp3 format. My focus will be the proliferation of the technology and the following debate and legal actions by the involved parties. The theoretical framework will be centered around Bruno Latour and others' work known as Actor Network Theory. If anybody knows of any prior reseach on the topic, be it from a technical, sociological, judicial or any other point of view, I'd be grateful to hear about it.
