May I suggest to the list owners that AOIR consider establishing a moderated/edited link (members submit blurbettes to the person(s) responsible for keeping this updated/fresh) from the main AOIR web page for recent dissertations, publications, etc. from AOIR members in some sort of categorized arrangement? Somewhat like David's cyberculture book reviews service, i.e., an alert about new stuff, but a link not the reviews to the list, etc? I think the most recent post by Professor Hampton was interesting, but it made me think that there might be many other list members with interesting work to share who may be a bit more shy about announcing it? This might also be a way to reduce the volume of postings -- this is becoming a high volume list. Just a suggestion. RG Lentz, UT/Austin.

Internet surveys

I am curious what people would consider to be the "top 10" surveys that have been conducted in the past two years dealing with Internet usage at a sort of general level, or that at least begin the survey with a few general questions about "how often do you log in to the Internet" e.g. If people would be kind enough to send me their nominations for such surveys, plus the URL, I will be glad to compile and send to the list. Dear all, At the URL: http://thalis.math.upatras.gr/~mboudour/articles/ssweb.pdf you may find a first draft of our article (by Boudourides & Antypas) entitled "A Simulation of the Structure of the World-Wide Web." Abstract: In this paper we are presenting a simple simulation of the Internet World-Wide Web, where one observes the appearance of web pages belonging to different web sites, covering a number of different thematic topics and possessing links to other web pages. The goal of our simulation is to reproduce the form of the observed World-Wide Web and of its growth, using a small number of simple assumptions. In our simulation, existing web pages may generate new ones as follows: First, each web page is equipped with a topic concerning its contents. Second, links between web pages are established according to common topics. Next, new web pages may be randomly generated and subsequently they might be equipped with a topic and be assigned to web sites. By repeated iterations of these rules, our simulation appears to exhibit the observed structure of the World-Wide Web and, in particular, a power law type of growth. In order to visualise the network of web pages, we have followed N. Gilbert's (1997) methodology of scientometric simulation, assuming that web pages can be represented by points in the plane. Furthermore, the simulated graph is found to possess the property of small worlds, as it is the case with a large number of other complex networks. Best, --Moses A. You can now download a copy of my dissertation on the Netville project "Living the Wired Life in the Wired Suburb: Netville, Glocalization and Civil Society" from the publications section of my website http://www.mysocialnetwork.net Cheers, -Keith Abstract: This dissertation addresses the question, what will be the fate of community and social relations as a result of the growth of new home-based information and communication technologies? How have social networks, social capital and community involvement been affected by the rise of personal computers, the Internet and computer mediated communication (CMC)? Will the Internet reconnect the disaffiliated, or will CMC only contribute to a further disengagement of American community life? Survey and ethnographic data from a long-term study of Netville, a wired suburb near Toronto, are used to investigate the effects of advanced communication technology on social relationships. Netville was one of the first residential developments in the world to be built from the ground up with a broadband high-speed local computer network. Netville provided a unique opportunity to observe the effects of advanced information and communication technology on peoples daily interactions with family, friends and neighbours. The wired residents of Netville are compared with a similar group of non-wired residents who lived in the same neighbourhood, but who were never connected to the local computer network. Greater involvement with friends, family and neighbours is inked to use of CMC. Internet use is associated with high levels of in-person and telephone contact, the exchange of support, the growth of personal network and increased community involvement. -- Keith N.
