We are seeking expert advice from music researchers at all career stages about their training needs around using web data for their music research, as part of the Accelerating embedded computational analysis of Web data about music in UK universities project, led by a research team at Durham University and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AH/X007316/1). Thus, we are inviting music researchers to take part in a 1-hour online focus group session on Zoom, between 4th and 11th July, to discuss their needs and potential training opportunities which would benefit them as a music researcher wanting to work with web data about music. This study has received approval from the Department of Computer Science Ethics Committee at Durham University (COMP-2023-05-25T16_23_51). The feedback from the focus group session will contribute to the design of a free training programme in digital skills tailored specifically for music researchers working with web data, which contributors will have the opportunity to sign up for later this year. First Workshop on "Next-Generation Models for Generative AI" (In conjunction with the Third International Conference on Digital Data Processing 2023) University of Bedfordshire, Luton. UK. November 27-29, 2023 https://socio.org.uk/ddp/workshop (IEEE CPS will publish the proceedings, and papers should follow the IEEE template) AI models use billions of parameters to detect and retrieve text and images. The currently available LL models are experimented with for their efficiency, and at the same time, newer models are being developed. There are many challenges associated with generative AI. The pre-training volume and efficiency are a focus. To leverage the training set with comprehensiveness and accuracy, billions of parameters are injected into the LLM. Current GPTs face criticisim and governments issue a caution to their use. For example, Zhuang Rongwen, China’s cyberspace chief, raises concerns over the power of generative AI and pledges to make it ‘controllable'. The agenda for the future Generative AI is not clear. Improved generative tools should be capable of characterising extremist narratives in corpora to reveal different contexts, which may lead to building semantic-rich content for end-users. Testing the current models and their results may contribute to future research. Considering these issues, we framed a workshop to address the theme, Next Generation Models. Dear colleagues, This is a reminder to consider submitting a proposal to the Misinformation Village at DEF CON 31, the largest hackers conference in North America. Join us at the Misinformation Village, a 3-day event in Las Vegas. The Misinformation Village is a collaborative of dis- and misinformation researchers, data analysts and computer linguists, cybersecurity and defence professionals, and all like-minded professionals across academia, civil society, government and industry. We seek to establish open and broad-sector frameworks to define, expose, analyze and counter the security challenges of misinformation and disinformation campaigns on democratic regimes, free markets, public trust, and open and progressive societies. Our goal is to stimulate engagement, exchange of ideas, and interactive learning. Here are the kinds of proposal formats we're interested in: 1. Research-Based Talks: Share your research findings on misinformation and cybersecurity. These talks are based on published, peer-reviewed research and should ideally contribute new knowledge or an innovative perspective on the topic. 2. Skills-Based Workshops: Conduct an interactive workshop to help participants develop specific skills or techniques related to combating misinformation and enhancing cybersecurity. 3. Investigative Journalistic Pieces: Present an in-depth exploration of a specific incident or trend related to misinformation or cybersecurity. The piece should shed light on the intricacies and impacts of the situation and offer insights into how similar occurrences can be prevented or mitigated. 4. Movie or Short Film Screening: If you have a film or documentary that discusses misinformation or cybersecurity in an informative and engaging way, we welcome screenings followed by a discussion. 5. Interviews/Fireside Chats: Propose a conversation with a prominent figure in the field. The talk should be engaging, insightful and provoke thoughtful discussion among attendees. 6. Book Talks: If you have published a book relevant to our themes, propose a book talk. Share your key insights and engage with attendees on the topics discussed in your book. 7. New Discipline or Open-Source Frameworks: If you have developed a new approach, tool, or framework for tackling misinformation or enhancing cybersecurity, we would love to hear about it. These presentations should discuss how the tool or approach works, its benefits, and how others can use or adapt it. This year, we're particularly keen on dissecting the following themes: 1. The mechanics of audience segmentation & analysis concerning disinformation targets 2. The propagation of disinformation campaigns across diverse languages and geopolitical landscapes 3. The impact and intersection of AI with fact-checking and disinformation propagation 4. The economic cost of disinformation on society, democratic norms, and free markets 5. The legal adjudication or prosecution of disinformation in the context of elections These broad areas will allow us to delve into specific yet far-reaching issues such as multi-lingual disinformation campaigns, the economic ecosystem of disinformation, the role of AI in fact-checking and more. New Report: How Users Make Sense of Misinformation Warnings on Personal Messaging

Hi all, (With apologies for cross-posting) On behalf of the Everyday Misinformation Project at the Online Civic Culture Centre, Loughborough University, we wanted to share our latest report “Beyond Quick Fixes: How Users Make Sense of Misinformation Warnings on Personal Messaging”<https://www.lboro.ac.uk/research/online-civic-culture-centre/news-events/ar…>. The report uncovers multiple interpretations users have of WhatsApp’s “forwarded” and “forwarded many times” tags. Based on these findings, it puts forward five key principles for the design of effective misinformation warnings. You can access the report here: https://www.lboro.ac.uk/research/online-civic-culture-centre/news-events/ar… This comes at an important time, as the Online Safety Bill is currently being debated in the UK House of Lords. That bill requires social media providers to take responsibility for harmful content published on their platforms, including misinformation. However, for encrypted apps such as WhatsApp, this could potentially mean compromising end-to-end encryption in order to monitor and censor messages, something Meta says it is not prepared to do. Our report shows that these platforms can protect user privacy, whilst also doing more to tackle misinformation. **Call for Chapters: Handbook of Critical Literacies and Gender Studies** deadline: 28 July 2023 Social, cultural, economic and political contexts are directly related to the need for working civic and critical literacies (UNESCO, 2008). Educational institutions play an essential role in the civic and citizenship training of their youth and in building students’ civic literacy abilities in the face of an increasingly complex media landscape in the form of media education. The notions of civic and critical literacy must be thought to include different forms of media culture, ICT and new media. Hence, literacy analysis is deepened to relations between media and citizens addressing topics such as gender issues or other indicators of inequality and power imbalances, as gender differences exist both in education and in the distribution of civic and critical skills. Critical thinking must be promoted from the intersection of formal learning with civic, social, and personal competencies. Media literacy is directly linked with citizenship and civic culture (Mihailidis, 2012). The complex media landscape increases the challenges of developing the capacities of those literacies, intricating understandings of news and other media forms of (mis)information circulation. The increasing digitalisation of everyday life has increased the flow of (mis)information, which raises questions concerning the role of media in the quality of civic and critical literacies. Therefore, civic and critical literacies encompass understanding the power relations that organise information, journalism and communication in general, as well as the ability to critically understand information conveyed by a growing number of media. The “MyGender – Mediated young adults’ practices: advancing gender justice in and across mobile apps” (PTDC/COM-CSS/5947/2020) project encourages the submission of chapters of up to 5000 words of theoretical work until 28 July 2023. Scientific contributions are accepted, in ENGLISH LANGUAGE, that address the following themes, though not limited to: – media literacy in higher education; – the role of Universities in the promotion of media literacy; – the links between media landscape and civic and critical literacies; – democracy and civic and critical literacies; – disinformation, fake news and other dangers to civic and critical literacies; – media education; – gender and civic and critical literacies; – mobile applications and civic and critical literacies; – mobile application regulation; – data literacy; – digital well-being and civic and critical literacies; – mobile applications and subjectivities; – critical thinking about mobile applications in higher education. The research will be conducted in the context of the Academy of Finland funded research project “Critical DataLit: Cultivating justice-oriented data literacies among GenZ” (Critical DataLit). The ideal candidate has a critical understanding of technology and making/digital fabrication/prototyping skills. We are looking for bold and creative thinkers willing to embrace participatory design with children and diverse stakeholders to develop a social justice-oriented approach to data literacy using creative practices. Research duties include reviewing relevant literature, collecting empirical data through working with stakeholders (schoolchildren, teachers, activity organizers, and other relevant actors), analyzing the data with help of theoretical frameworks, and writing academic conference and journal publications.
