The main goal of the workshop is to bring together media practitioners and technologists to discuss new opportunities and obstacles that arise in the modern era of information diffusion. This year's theme is: Misinformation: automated journalism, explainable and multi-modal verification and content moderation. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Automated journalism: novel automated and human-in-the-loop solutions for rumour detection/verification, fact-checking, stance classification, evaluation of existing solutions and novel relevant applications. Submitted papers should describe how their advantages would lead to being adopted in practice by journalists and the public (e.g. improved generalisability, ability to provide explanations, reduced bias) and address ethical considerations. - Explainable and Multi-modal verification: explainable rumour verification systems, evidence-based solutions, uncertainty and prediction explainability and general interpretable and transparent AI-systems, as well as multi-modal rumour verification/fact-checking models, sources and data, non-textual and multi-modal features. - Content Moderation: novel content moderation systems for inhibiting misinformation spreading, domain-specific content moderation solutions as well as content moderation systems that showcase generalisability and are interpretable. We invite submissions of technical papers and talk proposals: - Technical papers must be up to 4 pages (short papers) or up to 8 pages (long papers). Technical papers must contain novel, previously-unpublished material related to the topics of the workshop. Accepted papers will be presented orally and will appear in the workshop proceedings. - Talk proposals must be up to 2 pages describing the content of a short talk (the actual length will be determined based on program constraints). Social media seems to have awakened the urge to share images of our bodies. These shared visual representations contribute to the creation of individual and collective identities. They are tools of meaning-making and belonging in a highly mediatised world. Their visibility can be part of advertising campaigns, everyday interactions, intimate practices, activist engagement and many other affective practices. These are situated in digital cultures of affect and their inherent normativity is governed not only by social norms but also by the particular possibilities and algorithmic rules of platforms. Contested online environments have also become terrain for contemporary social justice movements and activists who both respond to and use online visual representations for their actions. These hybrid activist practices rely on embodied representations and combine online and offline activities. While online spaces enable important visibility, this visibility also carries risks and raises questions about who prefers not to be visible and what practices of resistance can be adopted. Digital participation is inextricably linked to embodied characteristics (e.g., gender, ethnicity, social class, age, (dis)ability or others). These intersecting identities can shape digital experiences enabling them to both liberate and oppress individuals and communities. Format The conference will include different formats for presentation on topics related to contested visibilities, everyday politics and online imaginaries of the body. We welcome individual submissions for oral presentations, which will be arranged in thematic sessions by the organising team. We also welcome submissions in alternative and creative formats, proposals may include video, audio, images, text, hyperlinks and multimedia that illustrate your reflections in the proposal. We are interested in abstracts that address the complexity of online representations of bodies and/or related visual practices (e.g., producing, perceiving, curating, circulating) through case studies, theoretical, empirical or methodological approaches. We strongly encourage submissions that take an intersectional approach and address embodiment in relation to social factors such as gender, sexuality, age, class, race/ethnicity, disability, and nationality. We are open to contributions from scholars at all career stages (early-career scholars are especially invited to participate), artists, activists, and media producers. We look forward to submissions on (but not limited to) the following topics: * The use of digital media for feminist, queer, anti-racist, anti-ageist, anti-ableist, anti-classist, neurodiversity, or illness-related activism and the returning critique of the normative body; * Reactionary visualities to the above activism and hate speech/imaginaries "against the woke"; * The intertwinement of socio-cultural imaginaries with platform cultures; * Chances and limits of hybridisation of commercial culture, strategies of self-branding and body activism; * Practical experiments with methods attuned to the 'online-groundedness' of social body images (e.g., body-image dominated platforms such as TikTok or Instagram); * Impact of online representation of bodies in various fields such as sports, memory cultures, advertising, fan/pop cultures, etc; * Augmented technologies of filtering, avatars and their significance for identity and meaning-making; * Images shared without consent, images that reproduce stereotypes and resistance by minority communities; * Images produced by media and news organisations as part of their work, which are ultimately criticised for 'othering'/stereotyping communities, and the activism involved; * Online communities as sites of political pedagogy and critique of mainstream/traditional media's stereotyping of the body; * Dialectical dialogues about the body in the online sphere: metadiscourses, beefs, videos about videos, Tiktok reframings; * Gendered and sexua(lised) digital/online representations of embodied diversity, difference and intersectionality; * Critical analysis of the relationships between digital spheres and gendered and sexual(ised) performativity, resistance and defiance; * Representations of bodies in relation to technology and artificial intelligence; Abstracts Please submit your proposal (300-500 words) until 15 May, 23:59 (CET) using the form at <https://bit.ly/ContestedVisibilities> and highlight how your work relates to the conference topic, methods used, and perspectives you would like to bring to the discussion. Talk: "Emergent Analogical Reasoning in Large Language Models"

When: Thursday, March 2nd at 1PM MST (20:00 UTC) Location: Zoom Registration Link: https://asu.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYrcu-qrDIoH9wsqUB2CW-imRZldf5qIznP Who: Dr. Taylor Webb, UCLA Title: Emergent Analogical Reasoning in Large Language Models Abstract: The recent advent of large language models — large neural networks trained on a simple predictive objective over a massive corpus of natural language — has reinvigorated debate over whether human cognitive capacities might emerge in such generic models given sufficient training data. Of particular interest is the ability of these models to reason about novel problems zero-shot, without any direct training on those problems. In human cognition, this capacity is closely tied to an ability to reason by analogy. Here, we performed a direct comparison between human reasoners and a large language model (GPT-3) on a range of analogical tasks, including a novel text-based matrix reasoning task closely modeled on Raven's Progressive Matrices. We found that GPT-3 displayed a surprisingly strong capacity for abstract pattern induction, matching or even surpassing human capabilities in most settings. Our results indicate that large language models such as GPT-3 have acquired an emergent ability to find zero-shot solutions to a broad range of analogy problems. Bio: Dr. Taylor Webb is a postdoctoral scholar in the UCLA Department of Psychology, working with Keith Holyoak, Hongjing Lu, and Hakwan Lau. His research is situated at the interface between cognitive science and AI, with a particular emphasis on using neural network techniques to build cognitive models that are grounded in real-world perceptual inputs. "Digital Methods for Critical Consumer Studies" Summer School, 2nd edition - Call for applications

Apologies for cross-posting \\ We are pleased to announce the second edition of the “Digital Methods for Critical Consumer Studies” Summer School, which will take place on 24-28 July 2023 at Villa del Grumello, Como, Italy. The DMCCS school The overarching scope of the Summer School is to introduce students to the basic Digital Methods’ concepts, strategies, techniques, and tools, as well as to stimulate them to apply such methodological arrays to consumer-related topics. In doing so, the School aims at fostering students' ‘activist’ attitude towards digital data by encouraging them to take seriously the ethics of digital research as well as the redistribution of the social value of digital data to the public. The main topic of the DMCCS23 will be: “Exploring the nexus among surveillance capitalism, consumer culture, and social media” This year the School will be dedicated to the theme of surveillance capitalism and its nexus with consumer culture. Digital platforms such as Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc. configure as ad hoc ‘surveillance devices’ for systematic data extraction from the mass of users they host – data that are used for explicit business purposes (e.g., targeted advertising, development of AI products and services, etc.). To meet their business purposes, platforms not only need an enclosed space where to monitor, track and predict user behaviour; they need to design spaces where to constrain users’ activities into standardised patterns of action in order to make their behaviours predictable. Social media like Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok seem particularly suited for this purpose, since they provide users with free tools to produce creative content, create communities and express their identities. All these tools are, yet, purposely designed to capture such social-cultural processes, transform them into data points, and convert them into marketing and business products – for a global and emerging socio-economic model that Shoshana Zuboff calls surveillance capitalism. Specifically, this year, we will address surveillance capitalism empirically through three main lines of research: 1. Mapping imaginaries and practices of surveillance capitalism within social media environments 2. Detecting and mapping the standardization of cultural production on social media (e.g., memetic behaviours) 3. Repurposing surveillance methods for social research purposes as well as exposing mechanisms of surveillance itself. Programme The school will be articulated across 5 days. Mornings will be dedicated to teaching activities, which will be managed by the teaching team and teaching assistants. The afternoons will be dedicated to student activities (overseen by teaching assistants). During the last day of the school students will present their work and receive feedback from directors, teaching assistants, keynote speakers, and fellow colleagues. It is proving harder to turn off the Twitter APIs than imagined. Data is still flowing and there remains no clear messaging about the launch of the new regime. It seems that operating Twitter itself depends on the API. Many Twitter researchers already have important but understudied collections. For example, these are my "Top 100" largest datasets: https://tinyurl.com/100LargeDatasets. These 100 curated "medium" datasets total 185 million records. I have about 1,000 smaller datasets collected over the last decade. As just one person in a massive ecosystem of disparate collections, my guess is that across all researchers at all institutions there are more highly relevant, valuable, understudied Twitter datasets than academia can fully parse. This is not to say the fight to keep the data flowing and low-cost or free is unimportant. However, take a quick look at my Top 100 then imagine all the data already stored by the academics (especially in computer science departments) who work at a scale 10X-100X of what I do. The key is to create more accessible repositories so that we can support teaching and research with (please forgive me) the "bird in the hand" and not lose hope over unlimited birds in the bush. To that end, if you see a dataset on the list and you want to study it or teach it (maybe both), that is legal, free, and possible on demand via DiscoverText. ~Stu -- Dr. Stuart W. AoIR 2023 panel on Identities, polarisation and fandom

Dear colleagues! We are working to put together a panel for AoIR around an intersecting theme of fandom & identity, and polarisation & partisanship. How do people form identities and communities online within, besides and against capitalist economics - and in connection or disconnection with their political values? We currently have 2-3 papers and are looking for more contributors. This is deliberately kept very open, as we are interested in getting a wide range on perspectives, but some rough ideas we had were themes such as: - Capitalist clashes in internet culture - Political fandom/fans - Political communication and identities - Intersections of identities in religions, fandoms and politics - Data collection and media consumption intersecting with identity formation - Everything else that might connect to any of the themes Please get in touch if you already have a paper that would like a home, have an idea for a contribution or connection, or just want to hear details about the other papers involved already. All papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee on the basis of technical quality, relevance to BESC 2023, originality, significance and clarity. Please note: • All submissions should use IEEE two-column style. BESC 2023 accepts research papers (6 pages), special session papers (6 pages) and Doctoral Symposium papers (4 pages). • The page count above excludes the references (but includes any appendices). • Paper review will be double-blind, and submissions not properly anonymized will be desk-rejected without review. • Submitted papers must not substantially overlap with papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. • Papers must be clearly submitted in English and will be selected based on their originality, timeliness, significance, relevance, and clarity of presentation. • Submission of a paper should be regarded as a commitment that, should the paper be accepted, at least one of the authors will register and attend the conference to present the work. • All accepted papers will be included in IEEE Xplore and indexed by EI. SPECIAL SESSION PROPOSALS The Organizing Committee invites proposals for Special Sessions that cover any topic related to BESC. Special Sessions can also cover any other area focusing on challenging open problems of relevance in applications on Behavioural, Economic, and Socio-Cultural Computing. Papers accepted in the Special Sessions will be included in the same conference volume with those accepted in the main track and will be candidates for being invited to the journal special issues that will be organised for BESC 2023. The proposals for organising Special Sessions should be submitted to the Special Sessions Chairs by the indicated deadline. A proposal should be submitted in PDF, be no longer than 2 pages in length, and contain the following: (i) Title of the proposed Special Session. (ii) Names, affiliations and contact information of the proposers. (iii) Names and affiliations of the Program Committee of the proposed Special Session. (iv) Description of the proposed Special Session, including the covered topics and the rationale as to why it fits into the themes of BESC. (v) A dissemination plan of the CFP for the proposed Special Session that the proposers will undertake, if their proposal is accepted.
