Hello everyone! I have a situation with some social media data we collected for a paper that is currently under revision. The situation is complex because we collected this data from a Facebook group dedicated to a rare medical condition back in 2017, when social media data rules were not as strict as they are now. When we requested ethics review from our institution, they even told us we did not have to do anything in particular and got the study approval without much difficulty. Therefore, we requested permission to the group administrators to collect posts, posted a permission request for the group members, asking them to send us a message if they wished to opt out from the study, and collected one thousand posts by hand. We noted that there were many researchers in this group and that the members participated in surveys and medical studies frequently and with enthusiasm, so we thought at that time that an opting-out format would be enough. The data basically consists on user name, the texts in the posts, date and time of the posts, number of replies, and reactions. We separated the user names and replaced them with alphanumeric codes. Now, a reviewer of our paper is insisting that we MUST share this data openly because it is anonymized. However, we think that it should be available upon request, as social media data management has become stricter in recent years, particularly on the case of data from vulnerable communities. If we place this data related to a rare medical condition in an open repository, even people who are not researchers may have access to it and use it to bully this Facebook group, even if in theory, they could not target specific users. Does anyone have any ideas or advise on how we can respond politely to this reviewer that it is safer for everyone to keep the data available upon request? Xanat V. *** Third Call for Workshops and Minisymposia *** 29th International European Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing (Euro-Par 2023) August 28 - September 1, 2023, St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus http://2023.euro-par.org SCOPE Euro-Par is the prime European conference covering all aspects of parallel and distributed processing, ranging from theory to practice, from small to the largest parallel and distributed systems and infrastructures, from fundamental computational problems to applications, from architecture, compiler, language and interface design and implementation, to tools, support infrastructures, and application performance aspects. To provide a meeting point for researchers to discuss and exchange new ideas and hot topics related to parallel and distributed computing and their applications, Euro-Par 2023 will co-locate workshops and, for the first time, minisymposia with the main conference. This is an invitation to send proposals for the workshop and, for the first time, a minisymposium program. Both workshops and minisymposia will be held on August 28 - August 29, 2023, the first two days of the conference. WORKSHOPS Workshop Proposal Guidelines The proposals should include the following information: • Workshop title and acronym, preference for length (half or full-day) • Information of the organizers, including a short biography of each organizer (5-10 lines). Each workshop will have a single main organizer, the corresponding contact. Others can be co-organizers. All the organizers must be a staff member at an institution or a company, and no PhD or other students can be organizers. • A tentative program committee (10-15 members) • Motivation of the workshop: * scientific objective * interest to the Euro-Par community * positioning with respect to the currently existing Euro-Par workshops • Description of the workshop: * content * format (contributed papers, invited talks, panels, posters or any other kind of activity i including european project meetings) * organizational aspects • Workshop background (number of previous editions jointly with Europar or in any other format) • Link to international projects/initiatives The decision about the acceptance/rejection of a workshop proposal will be made on the basis of the overall quality of the proposal and the degree to which it matches the scope of the conference. In the case that several workshop proposals have very similar objectives and scopes, a merge of overlapping workshops may be recommended. The topics covered by a workshop should not overlap with the main topics of the conference. Decisions will be made on a rolling basis. Proposals can already be sent, and the organizers may be notified before the notification deadline in case of a strong proposal. Workshop Organizer Responsibilities • Preparing the call for papers for the workshop and publicizing it • Preparing and maintaining the workshop Web site including the relevant sections according to the organization guidelines • Selecting the workshop program committee considering that each member of the committee should make at least one review • Selecting papers through a rigorous peer-review process including at least three reviews per submission using the provided EasyChair installation and considering the possible conflicts of interest • Delivering the final workshop program to the Euro-Par 2023 conference co-chairs in time • Delivering the preliminary workshop proceedings in time before the conference • Providing the Euro-Par Steering Committee with a Management Report, after the conference, with key indicators such as: number of submitted and accepted papers, program committee and review process management • Delivering the final workshop proceedings with a revised version of the papers in time after the conference in the required Springer LNCS format (12 pages max.) and writing a preface to the workshop. Camera-ready papers will be published only if the management report has been delivered • Short papers can be accepted and presented at the workshop. However, to be included in the formal Springer proceedings, the minimum length is of 10 pages per paper • Registering for the conference • Meet the deadlines according to the organization guidelines Workshop Proceedings and Paper Review The workshop proceedings will be published in a separate LNCS workshop volume after the conference. The principal coordinator of each workshop will appear as co-editor of the workshop volume. Registered workshop participants will receive an electronic copy of the volume by email. All authors of accepted papers will be requested to sign a Springer copyright form. The Euro-Par organizers will provide an EasyChair setup for all Euro-Par 2023 workshops, and its use is mandatory to facilitate paper submissions, reviewing, and collecting the camera-ready versions. The workshop papers will not be published in the proceedings otherwise. Each workshop will be an independent track within the Workshops' EasyChair installation, but it will be fully manageable by the respective organizers. Papers of less than 10 pages will be considered as short papers that can be presented at the conference but not published in the proceedings. MINISYMPOSIA A minisymposium is a session of coordinated presentations for promoting interdisciplinary communication on a topic of current interest and importance in the field of parallel and distributed computing, ideally having potential application in other domains. The length and program will be decided by the organizers; half-day (three-hour) minisymposia are very welcome, longer is possible, not exceeding one day (6 hours). The contributions to the minisymposia will not be published in the proceedings. Minisymposium Proposal Guidelines The proposals should include the following information: • Minisymposium title and acronym, preference for length (half or full-day) • Information of the organizers (full name, affiliation, country and email address), including a short biography of each organizer (5-10 lines). Each minisymposium will have a single main organizer, the corresponding contact. Others can be co-organizers. • Motivation and scope of the minisymposium: * Problem area to be addressed by the speakers and possible applications [max 1500 characters]; * Description of target audience and estimated number of participants [max 1500 characters] * Link to international projects/initiatives • Format (contributed papers, invited talks, panels, posters or any other kind of activity including European project meetings), • Speakers: * a tentative list of speakers detailing their names, affiliation, email address and title of their presentations. Nominated speakers should be approached in advance and should have agreed that they will participate. * companies and/or institutions involved Minisymposium Selection Process All the submitted proposals will be assessed by the organizing committee. The decision about the acceptance/rejection of a minisymposium proposal will be made on the basis of the overall quality of the proposal and the degree to which it matches the scope of the conference. Overlapping minisymposia will be avoided (or possibly merged). Decisions will be made on a rolling basis. Proposals can already be sent, and the organizers may be notified before the notification deadline. Minisymposium Organizer Responsibilities Minisymposium organizers will be in charge of making publicity of the minisymposium and specify the number of talks and other activities. The contributions will be sent to the same web page as the contributions for the workshops. The review process will be decided by the minisymposium organizers. One of the organizers will be the contact with the conference organization. The responsibilities are as follows: • Preparing the call for papers for the workshop and publicizing it • Preparing and maintaining the minisymposium website mentioning the Euro-Par vinculation • Deciding the length of the minisymposium, the program and type of activities and the names of the speakers • Use the provided EasyChair installation for receiving the contributions • Delivering the program to the Euro-Par 2023 conference co-chairs in time • Providing the Euro-Par Steering Committee with a Management Report, after the conference, summarizing the experience and including number of persons involved in the activities as well as any consideration useful for future editions • Registering for the conference as well as all the participants to the minisymposium • Meet the deadlines according to the organization guidelines Minisymposium publication The contributions to the minisymposia will not be published in the proceedings. However, the organizers are invited to send one non-compulsory 4-page summary of the minisymposium. The document should summarize the scientific discussion promoted by the minisymposium and it will be published in the same LNCS volume as the workshop proceedings after the conference. The authors of the summary will be requested to sign a Springer copyright form. Fellowship Opportunity: Democratizing the Datafied Society The Data Justice Lab is looking for fellows to collaborate with us on exploring how to democratize the datafied society. The fellowships can either be based at the Lab in Cardiff, UK, or be conducted online. We welcome proposals from both academics and practitioners, and we are particularly, but not exclusively, interested in applications from the Global South. Your project proposals should relate to our current work in which we explore how affected communities address, influence, and resist the increasing roll-out of data systems, AI and automated decision-making in the governance of societies, and in which we investigate building-blocks for a more participatory and democratic form of data governance. Fellows will work with us for 2-3 months (we will also consider applications for shorter or longer periods). The fellowship should take place between March and September 2023. You are welcome to propose an exact time (within this broader period) that you prefer. The Department of Arts, Culture and Media (ACM) at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment in Indigenous Digital Arts, Culture, and Media. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter. Candidates must have a terminal degree: either an MFA or a PhD in Communications; Humanities; Indigenous Studies; Information Studies; Journalism Studies; Media Studies; Social Sciences; Visual and/or Performing Arts or a related field, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Candidates with an MFA should have the degree in hand by the time of application. Candidates with a PhD must have the degree in hand by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous. Most sincerely, Jess Call for Papers: Flow Volume 29 Special Issue 4: The Struggle Is (for) Real: Cultivating Authenticity in the “BeReal” age The viral popularity of BeReal prophesizes the next generation of social media and social sharing platforms. The image-centric sharing platform, launched in 2020 by Alexis Barreyat and Kevin Perreau, promotes itself as a platform for people who hate social media. The platform’s 10 million active users receive a daily notification reminding them it is “time to BeReal” while allowing two minutes to snap their current moment. Already recognized as the “antidote to social media fakery” (Duffy & Gerrard, 2022), BeReal encourages authenticity through the platform’s logic and design while policing users' labor through its emphasis on capturing each post in a single shot. BeReal cultivates a return to simplicity with its minimalist interface and simple user experience flow (Boffone, 2022). In the wake of COVID-19 lockdowns, BeReal promotes a sense of digital collectiveness as users share their pandemic moments and build a digital community. With increased social media fatigue, BeReal promises a platform experience where creative work and posting practices neither center around advertisements nor influencers (McKoy & Scanlan, 2022). This special issue of Flow opens a space to discuss this platform. What do BeReal’s unique affordances provide for users? How do they catalyze certain user behaviors and practices over others? How will BeReal shift influencer and creative economies? Is BeReal just another social sharing fad, or will the platform have a more permanent impact on digital platform cultures? As one of the first scholarly forums about BeReal, we welcome scholars to grapple with this emerging critical conversation interrogating BeReal’s role in the following topics and beyond: * Methodological ethics and concerns for studying BeReal * Telecommunications law and media policy * The future of advertising on social platforms * BeReal’s user experience * Race, Gender, and BeReal * Cross-cultural and/or transnational analyses of platform use * Influencer economies and platform labor * Social sharing v. social media * Behind the scenes of BeReal: authenticity and curation * Social media fads * Slow social media * Gamification of social platforms * Abolitionist and anti-carceral analyses of surveillance on BeReal To be considered for this issue, please submit a completed column of 1200-1500 words, along with at least three images (.gif or .png) or embeddable audiovisual materials with image sources. Details below, apply here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Ol-0DwCaXKWUQclBY-EE49g8gqlbpYrCIDU87mf6ol… Thanks, Fenwick *Call for Submissions* 21st-century AI is very much in its formative stage: It is still unsettled, and is continually being both stabilised and contested by diverse sets of actors: from technologists, startup founders and global companies to policy makers, journalists, and civil society. For some, AI is being positioned as a fix to our social problems, which in turn will change how we live, communicate, work and travel. Others raise substantive concerns that these developments might reinforce inequality, exacerbate the opacity of decision-making processes, and ultimately question human autonomy. We are thus living in a time when the infrastructures and institutions of our everyday lives are being (re)built at the hands of techniques which already elude popular and professional understanding; but while the controversies about the specific pathways to be taken are still visible, we can already perceive elements of closure and institutionalization. Our symposium invites contributions from an international audience to interrogate the shaping of AI. Building on an international collaboration between research teams from Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Canada <https://www.shapingai.org/>, we invite presentations that pursue critical engagements with AI’s media representations, policy framings, and scientific debates. Crucially, we also invite epistemic reflections in how we are all Shaping AI, including practice-based research or research-creation. Call for Nominations The International Journal of Press/Politics Hazel Gaudet-Erskine Best Book Award 2023 Deadline: 17 March 2023 Nominations are invited for the annual International Journal of Press/PoliticsHazel Gaudet-Erskine Best Book Award, to be sent to committee members no later than March 17, 2023. Rationale The International Journal of Press/Politics Hazel Gaudet-Erskine Best Book Award honors internationally oriented books that advance our theoretical and empirical understanding of the linkages between news media and politics in a globalized world in a significant way. It is given annually by the International Journal of Press/Politics and sponsored by Sage Publications. The award committee will judge each nominated book on the following criteria: the extent to which the book contributes to internationally relevant knowledge; the significance of the problems addressed; the strength of the evidence the book relies on; conceptual innovation, clarity of writing; and the book’s ability to link journalism studies, political communication research, and other relevant fields of intellectual and scholarly inquiry. Eligibility Books written in English and published within the last ten years will be considered. Monographs as well as edited volumes of exceptional quality and coherence will be considered for the award. Books by current members of the award committee are ineligible and committee members will recuse themselves from discussion of books by members of their own department, works published in series that they edit, and similar circumstances.
