*LAST CALL FOR PAPERS: 14th International Workshop on Behavior Change Support Systems – BCSS 2026* Hakodate, Japan https://bcssworkshop.wordpress.com/ The 14th Int’l Workshop on Behavior Change Support Systems – BCSS 2026 – will be held in conjunction with the 21st International Conference on Persuasive Technology in Hakodate, Japan. *Important dates* Submission deadline: January 15, 2026 January 26, 2026 Notification to authors: February 5, 2026 Final version deadline: February 20, 2026 Event: March 10, 2026 *Description of the event* The Behavior Change Support Systems workshop, BCSS, organized in conference style, builds around the concept of information systems specifically designed to help and support attitude or behavior change in individuals or groups. Information technology has the capacity to enable smart, virtual persuasive environments that provide multimodal cues and psycho-physiological feedback for an individual’s change by strengthening emotional, social, and physical presence. Numerous technologies and applications have been developed over the past decades, showing promising results in motivating and supporting people in domains such as health and wellbeing. As a research field, persuasive technology continues to be a crucial link between different sciences, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of systems supporting behavior change and an interdisciplinary approach to their design, implementation, and evaluation. However, the full potential of these technologies shaping behaviors and tracking the progress and outcomes of interventions have not been used to their full potential. This workshop series seeks to shed new light on the various processes of behavior change support systems. Yet, although human-computer interaction is social in nature and people may even see software applications as social actors, it is still surprisingly unclear how these interactions end-up shaping our attitudes and behaviors. Additionally, the pitfalls and potential drawbacks are not yet fully understood. As people interact with these technologies, they, at the same time, keep modifying their environment as well as adjust their goals during use time. This seems to indicate that digital persuasion is not a one-time, isolated event but rather an ongoing, dynamic process. Since its inauguration, the BCSS workshop has emphasized the highly interdisciplinary approach required for developing and implementing such systems. The workshop provides a scholarly forum connecting researchers, practitioners and experts from various scientific disciplines such as information systems science, human-computer interaction, industrial design, and psychology, and application domains such as information security, sustainability, and medicine. This year’s event especially seeks, but is not limited to, submissions that discuss innovative approaches and cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and metaverse in the design, development and implementation of BCSS. The ultimate goal is to create efficient and flexible BCSSs that promote long-term positive user experience. *Paper submission* Scientific papers in two categories are sought for (the submission can be either in CEUR or Springer LNCS format): · Full papers (max 16 pages) · Short papers (5-9 pages) All the papers will be reviewed by at least two reviewers. Dear colleagues, The Digital Technology for Democracy Lab is pleased to announce the seventh session of the Gender & Tech Online Talk Series, scheduled for January 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. (EST). The “Dis/Misinformation and Political Extremism” talk will explore the role of digital technologies in the crisis of trust in democracy and institutions worldwide. The focus is on the rise of an organized global far-right and the weaponization of information at scale to produce harm to democracy and public institutions, with special attention to Global Majority regions. Speakers can also discuss the possibilities of recreating narratives about free speech and human rights protection in the age of datafication. Some issues we hope to address include the current trends in the dis/misinformation field, the role of informality and social inequalities in these trends, the main challenges in tackling online harms, and public policy interventions that represent best practices in addressing dis/misinformation online. The Industry Track of VARIABILITY 2026 offers a platform for practitioners, researchers, and technology leaders to share practical experiences in industrial settings with reuse, variability management, configuration, and product line engineering across software and systems. Building on the industrial tracks of SPLC, VaMoS, and ICSR, this track bridges research and practice by showcasing how variability, reuse, and product line strategies are being applied and developed in today’s fast-changing industrial environments. Software systems are becoming increasingly configurable, data-driven, and AI-enabled (e.g., using foundation models), while also integrating advanced technologies such as quantum computing. This growing complexity calls for balancing flexibility, reuse, and quality amid pressures from emerging technologies and sustainability objectives. The Industry Track welcomes submissions that demonstrate how these challenges are addressed in real-world settings, whether through success stories, lessons learned, or reflections on failures that yielded valuable insights. We especially encourage submissions that demonstrate how variability management, reuse, and configuration approaches are being applied or reimagined in industrial settings, including through AI, digital twins, large language (LLMs) and foundation models, quantum computing, and cyber-physical systems. With kind regards, Francesca --- We're hosting an Autumn School in London, UK, from 15 to 17 September 2026, to bring together ethnographers and cryptographers to discuss ways in which the two fields can be meaningfully brought into conversation. This is also the premise of our Social Foundations of Cryptography project; to ground cryptography in ethnography. The intention is to 'flip' the typical relationship between the computer and social sciences, where the latter has traditionally ended up in a service role to the former. Rather, we want to put cryptography at the mercy of ethnography. But how do we do this? How do we as ethnographers retain the richness of ethnographic field data in conversations with cryptographic work? Indeed, our project has already highlighted some limitations of our approach. It has brought to the fore concrete challenges in 'letting the ethnographic data speak' while still making it speak *to* cryptography. While the collection of technologies commonly known as “AI” have been developed and interrogated by researchers for decades, these tools have only recently captured the public’s attention. The widespread availability of these technologies has quickly impacted multiple facets of society, raising important ethical and practical questions about how these tools should be used and studied. This talk examines the social and technical development of AI and reflects on how social scientists could and should interact with these tools—or not—as objects of study as well as tools for research and teaching. Particular attention will be given to the limitations of these technologies, their ethical and environmental impacts, and their appropriateness for different scholarly tasks. Prof Bilge Yesil (she/her), City University of New York - profile Talking Back to the West: How Turkey Uses Counter-Hegemony to Reshape the Global Communication Order Turkey’s global communication apparatus has expanded remarkably since the 2010s under the Erdogan regime, promoting the country as a rising power while discrediting the West. Part of this project involves Turkey’s efforts toward digital sovereignty, including regulating global platforms and promoting domestic technological infrastructure. Although Erdogan's proxies claim to decolonize the global communication landscape and advocate for the Global South, Yesil argues that their counter-hegemonic mobilization is transactional, selective, and exclusionary and provides critical insights into the politics of victimhood and the essentialization of East–West binaries.
