The 7th International Conference of the Immersive Learning Research Network (iLRN 2021 at https://immersivelrn.org/ilrn2021 ) opens in just a few hours' time on the iLRN 3D Virtual Campus! Technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Education Society, iLRN 2021 will be an innovative and interactive virtual gathering for a strengthening global network of researchers and practitioners collaborating to develop the scientific, technical, and applied potential of immersive learning. It is the premier scholarly event focusing on advances in the use of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and other extended reality (XR) technologies to support learners across the full span of learning--from K-12 through higher education to work-based, informal, and lifelong learning contexts. Following the success of iLRN 2020, our first fully online and in-VR conference, this year's conference will once again be based on the iLRN 3D Virtual Campus, powered by Virbela, but with a range of activities taking place on various other XR simulation, gaming, and other platforms. Digital Democracy Historical Archive Tools?

E-Democracy.org is look for an option to essentially convert our database driven https://forums.e-democracy.org site into a static archive. The open source GroupServer tool and host we use is sunsetting. This would sort be like our own WayBackMachine ... with I assume hundreds of thousands public civic online group messages. We are also looking to figure out a way to convert the postgres message database into mbox files that could be in theory imported into Mailman, etc. for our still active groups. For reference, E-Democracy was the original election information site back in 1994 and host of an ongoing online town hall format (that figured out a process to dealing with civility and rumourmongering before Facebook even started.) The AoIR Doctoral Colloquium will take place in October 2021 in conjunction with AoIR2021 Independence. For many years, this event has provided PhD students working in Internet research with the opportunity to workshop on research projects, to address methodological and theoretical challenges, and to exchange informal advice on juggling the multiple pressures associated with job searching, publishing, and finishing the dissertation with senior scholars. As always, we have excellent mentors in place and we are always looking for more! If you are interested in mentoring for the AoIR2021 Doctoral Colloquium please email ac(a)aoir.org. Summer Workshop: Beyond Misinformation

Beyond Misinformation: Towards a Research Agenda for Information Ecosystems, Network Dynamics, and Emergent Epistemologies Where: Virtual (Zoom) When: August 5-6, 2021 This workshop starts from the premise that the problem of online misinformation is a symptom, not a cause. While undeniably problematic, misinformation is the current cause célèbre of a larger class of pathological dynamics that have emerged in our evolving digital media ecosystems and cause harm at different systemic levels. These dynamics are exacerbated by many aspects of our evolving digital infrastructure, including the affordances of different media platforms, algorithmic filters, the loss of trusted gatekeepers, the attention economy, and ever evolving modes of journalism. Additionally, cognitive factors as well as offline social structures, including systems of oppression, play an enormous role in shaping the consensual realities that emerge in digital spaces. This is a wicked problem, and while many dimensions of the problem have been examined, a more complete articulation requires the synthesis of insights from scholars across many disciplines. Our hope is that this workshop will provide a vehicle for this process and pave the way to a research agenda that leads to solutions. To participate, please submit an abstract to the conference website (https://easychair.org/cfp/INDE-2021) by June 15, 2021 that addresses at least one of the following questions: 1. How do current information ecosystems exacerbate pathological psychosocial dynamics in human societies, and what might be done to fix them? 2. What new theoretical and/or methodological approaches are necessary to strengthen our understanding of the pathological dynamics of information ecosystems? 3. What pattern of pathological dynamics created or exacerbated by our information ecosystems is the most pressing to address? Abstracts should be 500 to 1000 words in length and should articulate connections between pathological dynamics, information ecosystems, psychosocial factors, and / or design. Pathological dynamics might include but are not limited to the spread of misinformation, ideological polarization, partisanship as a social identity, tribalism, online toxicity, clicktivism, conspiracism, and extremism. Priority will be given to statements that report on work that has moved beyond a conceptual stage. We are eager to receive contributions from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, including biology and evolutionary science, physics and network science, critical race and cultural studies, complexity theory, computational sciences, philosophy, and the social sciences. Notifications will be sent by July 15. Nine to twelve participants will be invited to present their work and others will be invited to participate in a collaborative sense-making effort that spans two days. The organizers will synthesize the effort into a white paper that will be made available on the workshop website. *Reactionary Digital Politics: Ideologies, Rhetorics, Aesthetics* June 21-25 You are warmly invited to a five-day series of unique interdisciplinary international conversations about online politics, right-wing populism and reactionary ideologies. This series stages a range of cross-disciplinary dialogues addressing the impact of digital culture and platform technologies on the take-up and spread of radical-right politics, aesthetics and ideologies. It will feature a ‘keynote conversation’ between *Whitney Phillips* (Syracuse University) and *Quinn Slobodian* (Wellesley College) alongside panel discussions addressing topics such as reactionary ideologies, online extremism, conspiracy theory, reactionary rhetorics and aesthetics, and the politics of digital platforms. Participants -Deen Freelon (University of North Carolina, media scholar, data scientist, and software developer, author of over 30 articles, book chapters and public reports focusing primarily on political expression through digital media) -Bharath Ganesh (University of Groningen, political geographer focusing on new media, political communication, and cultures of hate) -Paolo Gerbaudo (King’s College London, author of Tweets and the Streets: Social Media and Contemporary Activism and The Digital Party: Political Organisation and Online Democracy) -Jessica Johnson (University of Washington, anthropologist specialising in religion, radicalisation and reactionary masculinities) --June 25th: Keynote Conversation: Whitney Phillips and Quinn Slobodian This final 'keynote conversation’ brings together experts in vernacular digital culture and in the political history and ideology of neoliberalism to discuss the culture, history, politics and political economy of misinformation today. *Whitney Phillips* has been highly influential in shaping understandings of online communities, networked communication, and the relationships between digital subcultures and mainstream media. Co-authored with Ryan Milner, her recent book You Are Here: A Field Guide for Navigating Polarized Speech, Conspiracy Theories, and Our Polluted Media Landscape, draws on theories of ecology and environment to propose means of combating misinformation, antagonism and the amplification of toxic political ideas. *Quinn Slobodian* has made landmark contributions to the disciplines of political theory and intellectual history. As the author of Globalists: The End of Empire and the Birth of Neoliberalism and the co-editor of Nine Lives of Neoliberalism his work has been instrumental in mapping the contemporary political landscape.
