While research practices are often understood within a clean/dirty binary, Biruk shows that data are never clean; rather, they are always “cooked” during their production and inevitably entangled with the lives of those who produce them. Examining how the relationships among fieldworkers, supervisors, respondents, and foreign demographers shape data, Biruk examines the ways in which units of information—such as survey questions and numbers written onto questionnaires by fieldworkers—acquire value as statistics that go on to shape national AIDS policy. Her approach illustrates how on-the-ground dynamics and research cultures mediate the production of global health statistics in ways that impact local economies and formulations of power and expertise.

*Call for papersVirtual Conference of the International Journal of Press/PoliticsZoom, 13-16 September 2021Deadline for abstracts: 5 July 2021* On *13-16 September 2021*, the seventh conference of the International Journal of Press/Politics, focused on academic research on the relationship between media and political processes around the world, will be held virtually. *Professor Young Mie Kim* from the University of Wisconsin will deliver a keynote lecture. The deadline for submission of abstracts is *5 July 2021*. Attendees will be notified of acceptance by *12 July 2021*. Full papers based on accepted abstracts will be due *1 September 2021*. A selection of the best full papers presented at the conference will be published in the journal after peer review. *The conference will be free to attend*. There will be a voluntary conference registration fee for presenters of GBP 30. Attendees will need to register to receive the secure link to participate in the conference, and those who want to contribute to the conference budget will be able to make a symbolic donation of GBP 5. The software will be able to host up to 500 participants at any time. Recordings of the conference video feed will be made available to the public shortly after the event. The virtual conference brings together scholars conducting internationally oriented or comparative research on the intersection between news media and politics around the world. It aims to provide a forum for academics from a wide range of disciplines, countries, and methodological approaches to advance research in this area. The conference will be held on four days, in half-day sessions alternating mornings and afternoons that will include presentations and networking sessions. No APC required. - [1]http://revistas.unisinos.br/index.php/fronteiras/announcement/view /50 Guest Editors: Eloy Vieira (Unisinos University) Fernanda Carrera (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), Leila Sousa (Federal University of Maranhão) and Pablo Moreno Fernandes (UFMG) In recent years, the intersectional perspective has been highlighted in research focused on acknowledge how discrimination articulates by different structures of oppression. The perspective is widely disseminated by the ideas of American black jurist and feminist, Kimberlé Crenshaw, who systematized the concept of “intersectionality” in 1989 in the United States. In Brazil, and a few years earlier but still in the 1980s, Lélia Gonzalez already denounced the effects of the double oppression of sexism and racism over black women. Beyond universities, the concept has been appropriated by social movements. It also circulates in discourses on digital platforms that try to draw attention to the way these oppressions cross and structure the everyday practices of many people. Thus, this configures huge gaps in spaces of power and construction of knowledge. The debate on intersectionality and its effects in everyday lives finds fertile ground in digital platforms for the inclusion of diverse experiences and concrete experiences in view of the particularity of each person. We announce a call for a special issue of Fronteiras Journal, a Brazil-based open access journal, on intersectionality and digital platforms. The special issue encourages submissions that explore one or more of the following issues: 1. Intersectionality, citizenship and social media 2. Cheers, Greg Call for Nominations: Surveillance Studies Network Book Award: 2021 The Surveillance Studies Network (SSN) invites nominations (including self-nominations) for the annual Surveillance Studies Book Award. The award is given in recognition of an outstanding monograph on surveillance published during the preceding year. We are currently inviting nominations for 2021 (i.e., books with a ‘2020’ copyright date). Single or multi-authored works are eligible, but not edited volumes. The winner will receive an award amount of £100 (to be split among authors if there is more than one), as well as a 1-year membership for the Surveillance Studies Network (SSN), which provides benefits including discounts on all SSN-sponsored conferences and events. The winner/s will be announced in late 2021 and will be honored at the 2022 SSN conference, if possible. photographies – Call for Papers Special Issue: Machine Vision in Context: Politics and Practices of Computational Seeing Issue Editors: Martin Hand (Queen’s University) and Ashley Scarlett (Alberta University of the Arts) This special issue will bring together interdisciplinary scholarship that engages critically with the evolving, recursive interrelations between machine vision and photography. The heightened capacities of machines to ‘see’ and visually categorize the world have been the subject of numerous recent journalistic exposés and public outcry. Whether critiquing the role that machine vision plays in efforts to track, detain, and penalize targeted communities, or charting the incorporation of similar technologies into urban infrastructures, self-driving cars and ‘smart’ appliances, there is a growing awareness that it is reshaping what is seen and what counts as seeing. Online, recognition algorithms increasingly automate the tasks of tagging, categorizing, and extracting meaning from the “unmanageable and unassimilable” accumulation of images circulating across networked environments (Henning 2018). Within this context of volume, scale, and distributed production, the photographic image appears to have receded from the realm of human perception (Zylinska 2017), working instead as an ‘operative’ agent (Hoelzl & Marie 2015) that drives and draws together the constellation of hard and soft platforms that comprise the contemporary mediascape (Dvořák and Parikka 2021; Mackenzie & Munster 2019). Images and their audiences are being ‘put to work,’ as the solicitation and generation of metadata as well as the non-human recognition of pixel- and user-based patterns facilitates the improvement and expansion of computerized vision (Sluis 2020). At stake is an unprecedented automation of visual culture, through the infrastructural dimensions of platforms and image economies, corporate and political efforts to harness these ‘structures of seeing’, and multi-faceted configurations of technologies such as facial recognition, wearable cameras, drones, locative media, and so forth (McCosker and Wilson 2020; Mackenzie 2017). This transforms or perhaps further reveals the radically contingent spatial and temporal dynamics of photography, its experimental forms (Gerling 2018), and tensions between its expanding role in expressive human sociability (Henning 2021) and the aims of computational interpretation to determine visual meaning (Geboers & Van De Wiele 2020; Zylinska 2021). We are at a critical juncture where the distinctive categories of the networked image, image processing, machine vision and the like, appear conjoined in ways that require critical engagement to properly understand their implications for contemporary photographic practices. Correspondingly, grounded examinations of how photographic images and practices are being used to advance the aims and applications of machine vision also present an opportunity for greater insight into the politics and practices of computerized seeing. This special issue will thus be concerned with examining the multiple challenges this suite of evolving technologies poses for the continued salience of the photographic, the contemporary politics of image making, distribution, ordering and interpretation, and the practices of personal and artistic photography. How are different forms of machine vision shaping practices of looking, seeing, sensing, and witnessing associated with photography? What are the historical continuities and discontinuities between imaginaries and technical aspects of machine vision in photographic practices? How and in what ways are historically embedded forms of visual inequalities being replicated or disrupted by computerized modes of seeing? How is machine vision being appropriated for social justice? How have artists developed critiques of machine vision? What roles are artistic interventions playing in the public understanding of machine vision? We seek substantial contributions (4,000-6,000 words) that engage with these issues and questions.
