Stay tuned for further updates. ========= ABSTRACT ========= Adaptive and personalized systems have become pervasive technologies which are gradually playing an increasingly important role in our daily lives. Indeed, we are now used to interact every day with algorithms that help us in several scenarios, ranging from services that suggest us music to be listened to or movies to be watched, to personal assistants able to proactively support us in complex decision-making tasks. As the importance of such technologies in our everyday lives grows, it is fundamental that the internal mechanisms that guide these algorithms are as clear as possible. It is not by chance that the recent General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) emphasized the users’ right to explanation when people face machine learning-based (or more in general - artificial intelligence-based) systems. Unfortunately, the current research tends to go in the opposite direction, since most of the approaches try to maximize the effectiveness of the personalization strategy (e.g., recommendation accuracy) at the expense of the explainability and the transparency of the model. The main research questions which arise from this scenario is simple and straightforward: how can we deal with such a dichotomy between the need for effective adaptive systems and the right to transparency and interpretability? Several research lines are triggered by this question: building scrutable user models and transparent al-gorithms, analyzing the impact of opaque algorithms on final users, studying the role of explanation strategies, investigating how to provide users with more control in the personalization and adaptation problems. [With apologies for cross-posting] Registration Open – Current Trends in Digital East Asian Studies, Wednesday 31 March 2021, 9-11am (BST) https://digitalmodernlanguages.wordpress.com/2021/03/03/current-trends-in-d…<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdigitalmo…> Research in Digital East Asian Studies has grown in scale and visibility in recent years, reflecting both the establishment of digital humanities initiatives in the region and increasing awareness of the limitations of digital tools developed in an anglophone context. Whether historic or contemporary, this research has to address a unique set of circumstances including the digitisation and OCR challenges presented by non-Latin scripts more broadly, different encoding standards, uneven availability of digital datasets/corpora, regional differences in how digital research is articulated, and variation in institutional embeddings for East Asian studies outside of the region. The field draws on a complex array of transdisciplinary, cross-regional and multilingual approaches which may be difficult to distil succinctly, but which offer an important counterpoint to anglophone digital research. In this panel, four leading scholars in East Asian studies offer their perspectives on a range of questions, including the following: * What have been the main scholarly achievements of digital East Asian studies in recent years? * What are the key social, technical and/or epistemological challenges for the field right now? * How do the different regional interpretations of ‘digital humanities/digital studies’ in the region, and the different institutional embeddings of ‘East Asian studies’ outside the region facilitate or complicate collaborative research on this topic? * To what extent are East Asian languages and scripts served by existing digital infrastructures, international standards and supposedly ‘language-neutral’ digital methods, and to what extent is a regional/localised approach necessary? * How should digital methods in East Asian studies be taught? Wed 17th March, 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM (UK) ## Registration: http://data-feminism-launch.eventbrite.co.uk/ ## Book: http://datafeminism.io/ As data are increasingly mobilized in the service of governments and corporations, their unequal conditions of production, their asymmetrical methods of application, and their unequal effects on both individuals and groups have become increasingly difficult for data scientists--and others who rely on data in their work--to ignore. But it is precisely this power that makes it worth asking: "Data science by whom? Data science for whom? Data science with whose interests in mind?" These are some of the questions that emerge from what we call data feminism, a way of thinking about data science and its communication that is informed by the past several decades of intersectional feminist activism and critical thought. Illustrating data feminism in action, this talk will show how challenges to the male/female binary can help to challenge other hierarchical (and empirically wrong) classification systems; it will explain how an understanding of emotion can expand our ideas about effective data visualization; how the concept of invisible labor can expose the significant human efforts required by our automated systems; and why the data never, ever “speak for themselves.” The goal of this talk, as with the project of data feminism, is to model how scholarship can be transformed into action: how feminist thinking can be operationalized in order to imagine more ethical and equitable data practices. DDH and Informatics are taking the Data Feminism book as an opportunity to explore broader collaborations between students and staff in our respective departments around how feminist perspectives can enrich our work with and about data. Students and staff in attendance will be invited to continue conversations, activities and exploring possible collaborations after the event. All are welcome to join this event. Catherine D'Ignazio Catherine D’Ignazio is a scholar, artist/designer and hacker mama who focuses on feminist technology, data literacy and civic engagement. She has run reproductive justice hackathons<https://kanarinka.github.io/makethebreastpumpnotsuck/>, designed global news recommendation systems, created talking and tweeting water quality sculptures, and led walking data visualizations to envision the future of sea level rise. With Rahul Bhargava, she built the platform Databasic.io<https://databasic.io/en/>, a suite of tools and activities to introduce newcomers to data science. Her 2020 book from MIT Press, Data Feminism, co-authored with Lauren Klein, charts a course for more ethical and empowering data science practices. Her research at the intersection of technology, design & social justice has been published in the Journal of Peer Production, the Journal of Community Informatics, and the proceedings of Human Factors in Computing Systems (ACM SIGCHI). From burlesque to drag to porn and pop stars, these performances push against decorums of respectability, instead flaunting the body to shock, entertain, tell stories, and express a new kind of gender expression. Nominations open 11 March 2021 for AoIR Exec Committee

Hello AoIR-istas, I am happy to announce that on 11 March 2021, AoIR will open your nominations for the new Executive Committee, to take office in October of this year and serve until October 2023. Below, you will find: a) a timeframe for the election, b) a description of the AoIR governance system and of the elected positions, c) our nominations and elections processes, and d) some key questions for candidates. * A. Timeframe of the Election:* 1. The call for nominations opens on 11 March 2021 and will remain open for fifteen (15) days. 2. Nominations for all positions close on 26 March 2021. 3. Candidates will be listed on aoir.org and further information will be made available on our membership system, where discussion fora will let you ask questions of the candidates. 4. Voting begins on 22 April 2021 at our online balloting site and will remain open for ten (10) days. (Details for accessing this site will be sent in a later message through our membership system.) 5. Voting ends on 1 May 2021, expiring at 12:00 noon, U.S. Eastern Time in the State of Delaware. Election results will be announced on the AoIR blog and air-list serv. The new Executive Committee is formally introduced and assumes its duties during the Annual General Meeting available via Zoom during the AoIR conference October 2021. More information about our election processes can be found in the AoIR Bylaws: https://aoir.org/bylaws/ Candidates should familiarize themselves with the duties laid out in the Bylaws. I also encourage persons interested in running for a specific position to contact me or any of the current office-holder(s) with any questions. Please also note that the position of Treasurer, in particular, requires a very specific skillset, which is outlined at https://aoir.org/aoirtreasurer/. Prospective candidates for Treasurer should reflect carefully on whether they have these skills. *B. AoIR Governance and Description of Elected Positions:* The organizational structure of AoIR is simple. There are 5 officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Graduate Student representative). The 9-member Executive Committee consists of these officers, plus the Past President and 3 Open Seat representatives. Elected officials hold their positions for two years. After two years, the Vice President becomes President. Nominations are invited for Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Graduate Student representative, and 3 Open Seats. You may nominate yourself or someone else you think would do a good job. Details on the nomination procedure follow below. Duties of the President: Article 4/Section 6 of AoIR's bylaws. Duties of the Vice President: Article 4/Section 7 of AoIR's bylaws. Duties of the Secretary: Article 4/Section 8 of AoIR's bylaws. Duties of the Treasurer: Article 4/Section 9 of AoIR's bylaws. Duties of the Graduate Student Representative: Article 4/Section 10 of AoIR's bylaws. Duties of Open Seat representatives: Represent the membership of AoIR, and contribute to decision-making. Members of the Executive have their membership fees waived for the duration of their term, and pay a reduced conference registration fee. *C. Nominations and Elections Processes:* Only current members of AoIR can run for a position. They may be nominated by anyone, including themselves. If nominated for more than one position, a nominee must choose to run for one (and only one) position in this election. You may nominate yourself or others. If nominating someone else, confirm with that person that they are willing to run, and eligible to do so. Please provide in your nomination email a short candidate statement addressing the questions below. (If you don't know, we'll contact them and ask.) All candidates for election will be required to provide answers to the questions listed below, have the answers posted to the AoIR election forum, and participate in an online candidate forum. In addition, the Graduate Student candidates must confirm in their response that they comply with the by-laws: the Graduate Student Representative must be actively enrolled in a degree program at the time of nomination and election. Further, because of the specific legal duties and skills requirements for the position of Treasurer, candidates for this position should demonstrate experience with budget management and familiarity with U.S. tax law. Treasurer candidates should provide a detailed statement on their ability to meet the requirements of that role, as outlined at https://aoir.org/aoirtreasurer/. The voting system used by AoIR allows one vote per member for each of the elected positions listed above. Votes will be tallied using a balloting software. In the case of the four directly elected officers, the candidate with the highest number of votes shall be declared the winner; in the case of the Open Seats, the candidates with the highest, second-highest, and third-highest votes shall be declared the three winners of the Open Seats. In the case of tied results for the officer positions, the winner shall be determined by the ballot counters, by drawing of lots, using a method that ensures each of the tying candidates has an equal chance of success and witnessed by at least 1 person independent of the association. In the case of tied results for the open seat positions, the drawing of lots shall be used only when there are more tied candidates than seats available. *D. The Department of Communication at the University of Haifa invites applications from outstanding candidates for an open-rank position in the field of communication studies.* The department offers single and double major B.A. programs in communication studies, a research M.A. and Ph.D. programs, as well as an M.A. program in Strategic Communication and Public Relations. Faculty in the department study the meanings and effects of communication in an age of evolving technologies and cultures, using a variety of methodological approaches. We seek applicants in all subfields of communication research. Only candidates that are expected to have completed their Ph.D. by October 2021 will be considered. While a Ph.D. in communication is preferred, candidates with training in related fields who have published in leading journals in the field of communication will also be considered. The successful applicant is expected to have at least three publications in top-tier communication research outlets. The language of instruction at the University of Haifa is Hebrew, but a period of adjustment is an option. We will begin reviewing the applications on April 4, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.
