Proposing ethics-related sessions for #AoIR2021

Hello, AoIR! I'm writing today in partnership with Ylva Hård af Segerstad (cc'd) to see if anyone would like to join a set of panel and/or roundtable proposals for #AoIR2021 focused on research ethics. We are both on the AoIR Ethics Working Committee, but we aren't limiting our call for participants to those members. Anyone is welcome to join us, but note the deadline is coming up quickly! The Ethics group typically submits two types of proposals for an AoIR conference: - A panel of contributed papers centered around a theme of research ethics. A few have already come forward expressing interest be we have room for more participants. You'll need to provide us a 1200-word extended abstract by the end of the week (hoping there might be work already in progress...I'm not asking anyone to scrounge this up on such short notice). And we should again be in a position to publish selected papers in a special issue of the Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society. Details on that to come later. - A roundtable discussion to spark informal conversation on new issues emerging since the publication of the Ethical Guidelines 3.0, possible topics for new addenda to add to those guidelines, and really anything else. Hi folks, We currently have a vacancy for a UKRI / AHRC COVID Response project: Public Health Messaging during the COVID Pandemic: Dating App Usage and Sexual Wellbeing among Men Who have Sex with Men Public health measures to mitigate the spread of coronavirus are translated into media messaging by organisations that target the health of different groups. Engaging experiences of the minority group of men who have sex with men (MSM), we will provide rapid evidence on the approaches and responses to these messages in relation to using digital platforms to connect for sexual purposes. We must understand MSM’s reception of these messages to impact upon policy and practice for this group, shed light on what to look for where minorities are concerned, and provide learning about COVID public health messaging that will benefit the general population. The University of Salford, in collaboration with the University of East Anglia and Birmingham City University have been awarded funds to appoint two Research Assistants to investigate this area through the UKRI’s Covid Response Call and via the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Knowledge and experience of research related to gender and sexuality in a digital context is essential for this project. Additional knowledge and experience of digital methods, survey methods, or large scale qualitative data analysis is desirable although some training will be available. BigBang [2] is an open source research project that studies collaboration and contention in digital infrastructure projects and governance institutions. We do this by combining data science techniques with qualitative methods. For example, with BigBang you can analyze participation, affiliation, gender, and networks in the IETF, ICANN, RIPE, IEEE, or the 3GPP. We very much welcome both technicial and non-technical contributors! BigBang is built on the scientific Python stack, and we use Jupyter notebooks to make the analysis transparent and accessible. Bria works at the intersection of technology, geopolitics, economics, and society to make digital innovation more socially responsible. As an international mentorship program, Forecast offers artists and creative thinkers the chance to work with accomplished mentors toward bringing their projects to fruition. As a mentor, Bria is interested in working with people who seek to articulate a strategic vision of how digital technologies can facilitate the transition from today’s digital economy of surveillance capitalism and data extractivism to an alternative political and economic project based on data democracy, digital sovereignty, and citizen participation. The possible focus of the application can be on rethinking smart cities to meet citizens’ needs, using technology and data at the service of people and the green transition. “This will kickstart a creative and interdisciplinary movement that develops political, aesthetic, as well as functional standards—in sync with state-of-the-art technology, environment, and climate,” she says. “I am looking for a candidate with a strong interest in economics and geopolitics of technology, and those with a good grasp of current technological developments, especially big data, AI, industrial automation, decentralized trust protocols, distributed ledgers, and so on,” she explains. “This systemic change needs its own aesthetics, blending design, arts, and sustainability. It’s at the intersection of these worlds that many of the emerging technopolitical issues, from global trade to economic national development to the future of welfare, are to be tackled.” About the Mentorship Program For each edition, Forecast selects six different mentors, all accomplished in their respective fields. Thinkers, artistic practitioners and cultural producers working in all creative fields, anywhere in the world, are encouraged to apply with projects that could benefit from the expertise of one of this edition’s mentors and their unique approach to material and knowledge production. There is no age limit and no processing fees. In addition to ongoing exchanges, this period also includes a one-on-one work-stay with the mentor at an international partner institution. CFP - Diversifying Persona Studies: Online International Conference and Special Issue

(Apologies for cross-posting) *Diversifying Persona Studies: Online International Conference and Special Issue* -What is persona studies? What should persona studies be? -How can the field be as inclusive and diverse as possible? -What are possible futures for persona studies research and scholarship? In 2021 we wish to ask hard questions about the assumptions and the scope of study that have hitherto grounded the field. We see this as a crucial opportunity to destabilise and to interrogate what we do and why we do it, to make space for new voices and areas of study, and to actively facilitate inclusive scholarship. *Participation in the online conference is in two parts. Accepted presenters pre-record a 10 minute research presentation and submit with an extended abstract of 800-1000 words. These will be collated into themed playlists, equivalent to a conference session. These playlists, extended abstracts and author bios will be circulated in a program to registered presenters and other participants for viewing throughout July and August. Presenters will then be invited to participate in a webinar with others from their playlist or theme. The webinar will be broadcast live and be equivalent to a panel and Q&A discussion. Those watching the livestream will be able to ask questions, through the webinar chair, both before and during the panel. The webinars will be crucial opportunities to discuss, develop, and grow our work. All presentation proposals can also be considered for inclusion in the special double issue of Persona Studies. This issue will be, as always, online and open-access, with no APCs. All topics relate to Persona Studies will be considered but we particularly encourage and welcome submissions that address: -understudied theories of persona -challenging persona studies -queering personas -activism and persona -indigeneity and persona -race and persona -disability and persona -age and persona -gender and persona -exceptional personas -contested personas -personas and the banal -persona and migration/diaspora -other considerations of difference, diversity, and justice with a persona studies framework *Call for Papers:* Abstracts: In the first instance, submit a 300-500 word abstract outlining the proposed presentation and its connection to the theme of diversifying persona studies. Bridging industry and scholarship, this dialogue will reflect on the web we have, the web we could have and the spaces of autonomy and creativity that thrive in between. * *About the Talk: *The internet has let us down. From promises of democratic inclusion to radical reinvention of everyday life, early hype about the internet has given way to skeptical cynicism, thanks to misinformation, hate speech, industry elitism, hacks and privacy harms. Suspicions about the internet are well-founded, but are they the whole story? This talk describes how we got the web we have and what it would take to build something different. Associate Professor Jessa Lingel draws on her research on digital culture to discuss themes of online publics, ethical design and digital practices in conversation with Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist and Craig Newmark Philanthropies. Bringing together internet studies scholarship with industry expertise, this dialogue will reflect on the changing values of digital tech, with a focus on the websites, platforms and communities that have carved out spaces of autonomy, creativity and hope. *About the Speakers: **Craig Newmark <https://t.e2ma.net/click/2dep0c/2pb3ug/q4moug>* is a Web pioneer, philanthropist, and leading advocate. Most commonly known for founding the online classified ads service craigslist, Newmark works to support and connect people and drive broad civic engagement. In 1995, Newmark started curating a list of San Francisco arts and technology events, which he personally emailed to friends and colleagues. People were soon calling it "Craig's List," and when Newmark turned it into a company, he monetized it minimally, opting for a business model that prioritized "doing well by doing good." Today, more than 5 billion ads have been posted on the site, the vast majority for free. Newmark has not been involved in the day-to-day management of the company since 2000. In 2016, he founded Craig Newmark Philanthropies to advance people and grassroots organizations that are “getting stuff done” in areas that include trustworthy journalism & the information ecosystem, voter protection, women in technology, and veterans & military families. Newmark serves on the board of directors of a number of organizations, including Blue Star Families, the Center for Public Integrity, Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York, Girls Who Code, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of American, Poynter Foundation, Sunlight Foundation, VetsinTech, and Women in Public Service Project. He also serves on the Board of Overseers of the Columbia Journalism Review and on the advisory board of nearly twenty other nonprofit organizations, including DonorsChoose.org, EFF, New America Foundation, Voto Latino, Wikimedia Foundation, and Women Who Tech. Born in Morristown, New Jersey, Newmark holds degrees in computer science from Case Western Reserve University. *Jessa Lingel <https://t.e2ma.net/click/2dep0c/2pb3ug/6wnoug>*is an associate professor at the Annenberg School for Communication and core faculty in the Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania. She received her PhD in communication and information from Rutgers University. She has an MLIS from Pratt Institute and an MA in gender studies from New York University. Her research interests include digital inequalities and technological distributions of power.
