Uppsala University is hiring a Senior Lecturer in Digital Humanities

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 46.000 students, 7.300 employees and a turnover of SEK 7.3 billion. In case of different interpretations of the English and Swedish versions of this announcement, the Swedish version takes precedence. The Department of ALM (Archival, Library & Information and Museum & Cultural Heritage Studies) offers the Master’s Programme in Archives, Library and Museum Studies (archival studies, library & information studies, and museum & cultural heritage studies) and the Master’s Programme in Digital Humanities (DH). Doctoral studies in information studies are also offered. The department currently has around 20 teachers and researchers and six doctoral students. The Faculty of Arts has appointed the Department of ALM to host the development of the digital humanities as a new field for interfaculty and interdisciplinary collaboration within research, education and infrastructure at Uppsala University. This initiative is currently in an expansive phase that includes a planned centre of expertise and research for research collaboration and infrastructure support within DH. The senior lectureship is linked to this initiative. Duties: The position includes research, teaching and examination primarily within the Master’s Programme in DH, but there will also be teaching and examination in the Master’s Programme in ALM. The teaching in the position entails a capability to elaborate on broad and inclusive perspectives on digital humanities in a manner that is theoretically profound and practice-oriented. Moreover, a capability to provide an in-depth understanding for and knowledge of how digital methods, digital source materials and digital research infrastructures impact knowledge production in the humanities, the operations of different cultural heritage institutions, and the applicability of humanities competences in working life. Duties include planning and implementing an integration of mutually relevant courses and course modules between the ALM and Digital Humanities master’s programmes. Teaching duties includes leading, planning, course responsibility, course administration and supervision. Supervision of doctoral students in information studies may also be included. Management duties may also be included. The duties in the position also include following developments in research within digital humanities, archival studies, library & information studies and museum & cultural heritage studies and society in general that have importance for work at the University and conducting both campus-based teaching and distance teaching online. Duties include collaboration with researchers specialised in the digital humanities both at Uppsala University and at other higher education institutions. Teaching is primarily in English but teaching in Swedish may occur. Applicants who do not speak Swedish are expected to learn Swedish as a work and teaching language within two years. Eligibility requirements: To be eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, applicants must have a doctoral degree in a social science or humanities discipline with direct relevance to the duties of the position, demonstrate educational expertise and have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the position well. Eligible applicants to a senior lectureship are to have relevant teaching experience from higher education. The applicant’s educational expertise, the scholarly expertise and the professional expertise must be relevant for the position’s subject content and duties. For educational expertise to be considered adequate, the applicant is to have had at least 10 weeks of training in teaching in higher education that is relevant for the field, or equivalent knowledge. In case of special circumstances, the training in teaching in higher education can be completed during the first two years of employment. Eligibility requires documented ability to teach in English. Assessment criteria: When selecting among eligible applicants, equal weight is given to both scholarly and educational expertise. Scholarly expertise: When assessing scholarly expertise, scholarly quality is the primary consideration. The scope of the research, particularly its depth and breadth, is also prioritised. The ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education at the doctoral level, and demonstrated ability to conduct community outreach are considered important. Documented experience of applying for and receiving competitive research funding and demonstrated ability to cooperate on research is a desirable merit. Teaching expertise: When assessing teaching expertise, primary emphasis is on teaching quality. Teaching expertise is to be well documented. The scope of teaching expertise, both breadth and depth, are also considered. The ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, to supervise and conduct examinations on all levels, and to link teaching to research are given significance. Teaching expertise includes the ability to interact with actors within and outside of Uppsala University relating to teaching in higher education. Documented experience of teaching in Swedish is a merit. Equal care is devoted to assessing teaching expertise as to assessing scholarly expertise. It should be noted that the holder of the senior lectureship will have opportunities to participate in developing and influencing how DH is formulated at Uppsala University. Previous documented experience of multidisciplinary humanities research, teaching, and leading research within the field of digital humanities is therefore a merit. Documented experience of teaching, research and publications within the ALM disciplines, i.e. archival studies, library & information studies and museum & cultural heritage studies, is considered an advantage. Assessment criteria; other skills: Administrative expertise and management expertise are important for the position and are given significant weight. Administrative expertise can be demonstrated through ability to plan, organise and prioritise work effectively, to adapt work for the intended purpose, and to define and maintain time frames. The expertise includes overall organisational planning, the ability to manage resources in a way that reflects the organisation’s priorities and the ability to work in a structured way and with an awareness of goals and quality. Management expertise is demonstrated through the ability to lead organisations and staff, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate and provide others with the conditions required to effectively achieve mutual goals. The ability to coordinate groups, to encourage commitment, inclusion and job satisfaction, and to manage conflicts are additional examples of demonstrated expertise. The ability to conduct outreach with the community and to share information about research and development will be considered. The ability to provide information about research and development is demonstrated through popular science activities, such as participating in informational activities, publishing popular science texts and participating in public debates on educational and research issues. Documented good collaborative skills are given particular weight. When hiring a new teacher, Uppsala University conducts a qualitative overall assessment of expertise and skills and choses the applicant judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to contribute to the positive development of the organisation. The recruitment committee may conduct interviews, evaluate trial lectures and contact references. For this reason, the applicant is to submit a list of references that can provide information on the applicant’s skills and personal characteristics relevant for the position, such as interpersonal skills, management skills, and the work methods the applicant uses. Asian Journal of Communication Special Issue: Biology and Technology: Guarding, Nurturing, and Governing Life Guest Editors: Michael Keane (Curtin University); Gerard Goggin (Nanyang Technological University); and Xiao Han (Communication University of China) The COVID-19 pandemic has increased human dependence on digital technologies. Biology, not technology is accelerating the digitization of the world and the digitization of the economy. This theme considers how digital communication technologies are transforming the ways people in Asia are living, and how states are seeking to govern and modify people’s lived behaviour. Across Asia communication about maintenance of the healthy body and appropriate social distancing is displayed in street signage, posters, TV advertising, and online apps. This theme takes its inspiration from two Chinese words: weisheng (hygiene) and yangsheng, (preserving health). These words can be translated literally as ‘guarding life’ and ‘nurturing life’, respectively. In regard to hygiene, governments have been quick to deploy sophisticated data algorithms to monitor citizens according to the requirement of guarding public health. The need for exemplary hygiene requires citizens to internalize disciplinary regimes and harmonize their behaviour with the goals of the state in the sense of Foucault’s bio-power. Alternatively, the notion of a risk society (Ulrich Beck, Anthony Giddens) offers a more individualized response, i.e. people make their own adjustments, assume personal responsibility, and seek out commercial products and services that offer health maintenance. The impacts extend beyond the communication sector. Culture, medicine and education industries are undergoing significant transformation. Meanwhile, the digital start up community is pivoting towards health solutions. New opportunities have arisen for investments in apps, robotics, 5G, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence. We are seeking out theoretically informed papers as well as empirical studies that draw on developments in Asia. Topics areas might include: · Digital apps for guarding health (weisheng) or nurturing life (yangsheng); · The role of communication in digital health infrastructures and strategic development projects in Asia; · Cultural attitudes towards technology and technological affordances; e.g. the use of robots and AI in health care; · The use of sensors (IoT) in the design of public interactive space; · The implications of hygiene regulation for mass community gatherings including religious, political and cultural events; for instance alternative modes of organization and participation; · Digital inclusion: e.g. the use of online services for more marginalised segments of the population e.g. minorities, disabled. · The impact of the COVID-19 on investment in the digital start up ecosystem in Asia, most notably in health related communication technologies. *Call for Papers: Journal of Digital Media & Policy * Special Issue: Digital Media, Public Policy and Covid-19 Special Issue Editors: Jock Given, Petros Iosifidis, Michael Klontzas The Covid-19 pandemic presents a challenge for researchers in various fields, including medicine, business and multi-lateral organisations. Yet, it also heightens the challenges facing media and communications organisations and journalists, including trust and information accuracy. In a time of uncertainty, digital media play a crucial role in shaping public policy, informing the public with useful, checked and scrutinized stories, reliable headlines and continuous updates. Media organizations proactively educate and inform the public, support public information campaigns and highlight what would need to happen in a national emergency. Yet, a pressing issue with modern-day, online media is the spread of misinformation not only in political and social spheres but also in healthcare. Governments, civil society organizations, media firms themselves and the general public can join forces for accurate and timely information-sharing, and meanwhile can prove to be highly effective for policy-making. Critically, new initiatives are springing from international, regional and national contexts, often in response to problems of harmful content and behaviour. However, critical questions need to be addressed concerning the accountability, inclusivity and diversity of these strategies. This special issue considers the role of digital media in forming public policy in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. The special issue brings together scholars of communication and media, political economics, policy and technology to debate the many ways in which media governance is taking shape worldwide. The special issue is tightly held together on industry and communication policy. Therefore, contributors are invited to address issues such as: • digital media policies, especially policy on Covid-19 in different national and regional contexts • governments’ interactions with media organizations and platforms • suitable controls in emergencies, including Covid-19 • policies to balance information and freedom of expression with misinformation and rumours • implications for future public policy. Deadlines Abstracts of 400 words to be received by Monday 25 May 2020, and full manuscripts of 6–8,000 words, including refs, by Friday 4 September 2020 in order to be sent out for review. Peer-reviewed manuscripts will need to be with the Editors by Friday 9 October 2020 and final decisions/articles to be sent to the publisher by Tuesday 1 December 2020. Hello everyone, Can anybody recommend a good source (academic or journalism) about the long dispute between NYC and Verizon over FiOS? It's been a couple of years since I last heard about the lawsuit ( https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/03/nyc-sues-verizon-alleges-failur…) which I suppose is still ongoing, but has anyone written this up as a good long-form piece or academic case study? The book presents stories of many kinds, from speculative treatises, via the recollection of a thousand everyday conversations, to an account of the making of a radio documentary. Zig-zagging through the lanes of Govindpuri, Listening into Others explores the vibrant sounds emanating from slum culture. Redefining ethnography as listening in passing, Chandola excels at narrating the stories of the everyday. The ubiquity of smartphones, sonic selfies, wailing, the ethics of wearing jeans, the crossroad rituals of elections, the political agency of slum-dwellers, the war of the sexes through bodily gestures, and conflicts over ownership of both property and sound generated in the slums — these are among the many encounters Chandola opens up to the reader. Slums are anxious spaces in the materiality, experience, and imagination of a city. They are the by-products of the violent and exploitative mechanisms of urbanization. What becomes of the slum-dwellers, who universally, across centuries, cities and continents, befall similar fates of being discriminated, reckoned to be the scum of the earth, and a burden on society? By listening to identified others and amplifying their voices in their own vocabularies and grammar, Tripta Chandola’s praxis creates a methodological, political, and poetic rupture. Slums, she finds, are not anathema to the city’s past, present, or future. They are an integral component of urbanization and a foundational part of the city. Does anyone have suggestions of book chapters or articles that provide an overview of current research and practice regarding deep fakes, AI, and so forth? Santa Clara Principles update & consultation

[ And with standard apologies for cross-posting. ] I want to draw your attention to the consultation process to update the Santa Clara Principles on Transparency and Accountability in Content Moderation: https://santaclaraprinciples.org/cfp/ These principles have proved somewhat useful in getting tech companies to improve the information they provide to users about content takedowns under their Terms of Service. EFF had a list in 2019 of major platforms that had at least partially adopted them: https://www.eff.org/wp/who-has-your-back-2019 There's going to be a big revision process over the next year, and the first stage is to hear from advocates and scholars working in the area. Any comments you can provide would be greatly appreciated (deadline is 30 June 2020). This consultation is an acknowledgement that the drafting of the initial principles was a relatively quick process by a small group of civil society advocates and scholars, and we left a lot of important voices out. The important thing for the next version is to make sure that they represent a more diverse set of views and address the major challenges that people have identified and are facing. So your input and expertise here would be really helpful. We'd also appreciate if you could circulate the call for submissions to others who may be interested. Any questions, let me know. Shelia Postdoctoral Fellowship in Social Impacts of Technology at Clemson University Dr. Shelia Cotten, a Provost’s Distinguished Professor and the Associate Vice President for Research Development beginning August 1, 2020 at Clemson University, is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Fellow for a 1 year position (there is a possibility it may be extended for an additional year, depending upon successful performance and project status). The position is available beginning August 2020. The postdoc will work with Dr. Cotten to analyze data from existing research projects and to collect survey, focus group, interview, and observational data on upcoming research projects. Projects focus on technology usage across the life course and the social, educational, health, and workforce impacts of this usage, thus experience studying either specific age groups, and/or the impacts of technology use, would be preferable but is not required. Applicants must have defended their dissertation prior to beginning the postdoctoral fellowship. A doctoral degree in Sociology, Psychology, Communication, New Media, Information Science or a related field is required. Candidates must have (1) strong quantitative and qualitative methodological and analytical skills, (2) experience writing manuscripts, and (3) good organizational and time management skills. Prior publications and grant writing experience will enhance the application. The Postdoctoral Fellow is a 12 month, full-time appointment, with salary approximately $50,000 depending upon qualifications. Benefits are also provided.
