CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS ----------------------------------------------------- ICWSM-2020 invites proposals for Workshop at the 14th International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM). Workshop participants will have the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with a selected focus -- providing an informal setting for active exchange among researchers and developers from a wide range of disciplines, including the social science and computer science. Workshops are an excellent forum for exploring emerging approaches and task areas, bridging gaps between the social sciences and computing, and elucidating results of exploratory research. Members of all segments of the social media research community are encouraged to submit proposals. To foster interaction and exchange of ideas, the workshops will be kept small, with up to 40 participants. The format of workshops will be determined by their organizers. We encourage workshops that promote different types of activities, including challenges, games, and brainstorming and networking sessions. We discourage workshops that are structured as "mini-conferences" dominated by long talks and short discussions. Workshops should leave ample time for discussions and interaction between the participants and should also encourage the submission and presentation of position papers that discuss new research ideas. The workshop should have the potential to attract the interest of researchers in computer science and social science. Proposals involving people of different backgrounds in the organizing committee and addressing topics at the intersection of different disciplines will have a higher chance of acceptance. Workshop organizers who want to publish the papers from their workshop (or significant portions of it) will have the opportunity to do so through a venue TBD. SUBMISSION FORMAT ---------------------------------------------------- Workshop proposals should include the following information: * Proposal Content: Proposals for workshops should be no more than five (5) pages in length (10pt, single column, with reasonable margins), written in English, and should contain the following: * A concise title: The names, affiliations, and contact information of the organizing committee. A main contact author should be specified. A typical proposal should include no more than four co-chairs. * An indication as to whether the workshop should be considered for a half-day or full-day meeting. * A short abstract describing the scope and main objective of the workshop. Identify the specific issues and research questions the workshop will focus on, with a brief discussion of why the topic is of particular interest at this time and for which research communities. * A two/three paragraph description of the workshop topic and themes. * A description of the proposed workshop format and a detailed list of proposed activities, with special emphasis on those activities that distinguish it from a mini-conference (e.g., games, brainstorming sessions, challenges, group activities). * An approximate timeline of the activities, including submission deadlines and evaluation. Include whether you will have an early-bird deadline for submissions to allow extra time for visa applications. * A description of how workshop submissions will be evaluated and selected (invited contributions, peer review, etc.). In case a PC is needed, provide a tentative list of the members. * Historical information about the workshop, if available. Short description of the previous editions reporting highlights and details about the approximate number of attendees and number of submissions. * A list of other related workshops held previously at related conferences, if any (list does not have to be exhaustive), together with a brief statement on how the proposed workshop differs from or how it follows-up on work presented at previous workshops. * A short bio for each member of the organizing committee, including a description of their relevant expertise. CALL FOR PAPERS: Media and Communication special issue: Children's voices on privacy management and data responsibilization Editors: Ralf De Wolf (Ghent University, Belgium) and Mariek Vanden Abeele (Tilburg University, The Netherlands) Submission of Abstracts: 15-31 December 2019 Submission of Full Papers: 1-15 May 2020 Publication of the Issue: October/November 2020 Information: Over the past two decades, substantial research has been devoted to how individuals manage their privacy in relation to technological innovations such as social media, recommender systems, wearables, IoT, and smart cities. Increasingly, children are also navigating and experiencing these technologies and their complexities. Because these technological innovations drive on children's personal information, it is oftentimes assumed that children need to develop certain awarenesses, skills and attitudes that help them to manage their personal data responsibly, thereby safeguarding their personal information. While there appears to be agreement on the empowering potential of privacy literacy for children, some scholars have lately voiced their concerns over the burden that this responsibility places on children and their capacity for resilience. A pertinent question concerns the role of society in mitigating such data responsibilization, for example by putting the focus on the responsibilities of service providers and other stakeholders, rather than exploring how and to what extent children need to be cognizant, literate, and responsible for their personal information. While a balance between empowerment and protection is suggested, it appears difficult to obtain. Given that children are key stakeholders in this debate, it is surprising that very little attention has been given to their opinions, perceptions and experiences. This is unfortunate, as their stories may inform about how children themselves perceive the responsibilities of the different actors involved. Moreover, their narratives may inform about how the social positions of children in contemporary digital societies are reflected in this debate. This thematic issue of Media and Communication aims to amplify the voices of children and invites scholars to examine their practices, perceptions and opinions with regard to privacy management and data responsibilization. We are especially interested in empirical research that investigates how children think about how their personal information might and should be used, as well as how they define their own and other actors' rights and obligations, but also welcome critical analyses of the current debate. This thematic issue welcomes submissions on topics involving, among others, sharenting, intimate surveillance, privacy literacy, personalized advertising, social media and social games. Example questions that are relevant include (but are not limited) to the following: * What do children think about their parents sharing personal information about them? * How do children perceive parental monitoring through social media, apps and or wearables? * In what ways do children experience surveillance in (online) educational contexts (e.g. digital learning environments)? What is their opinion on data collection and usage by schools? * How do children experience and what do they think about privacy literacy? * How do children think about personalization and data usage in social games (e.g., Clash Royale, Farmville)? * What do debates surrounding children and privacy management reveal about contemporary notions of childhood, parenthood, privacy, empowerment and responsibility? It is the world’s premier event on media architecture, urban interaction design, digital placemaking, urban media art and urban informatics. The MAB20 comprises various elements such as workshops, symposia, presentations, tours and exhibitions, and a partnership with the Amsterdam Light Festival. There are many ways to get engaged and different calls that might be of interest. The theme of the 2020 edition is #Futures Implied, which opens up investigations into future scenarios implied in today’s urban technologies like digital platforms and smart city technologies. How can we shape technologies to respond to their surroundings, contributing to cities that are both socially and ecologically sustainable? Some suggest that online work platforms and the so-called 'gig economy' are now planetary in scope, promising access to work for anyone with an internet connection and some skills. However, to what extent does that hold true for the world's refugees? Parallel to this spread of digital opportunities, refugee self-reliance has now become one of the leading mantras in global refugee governance and international development. A plethora of programmes and initiatives have therefore tapped into a pool of digital opportunities for livelihood provision and skills training among displaced persons and host communities. However, their scope, methods, and outcomes remain underexplored in both academia and policy. This special issue will explore the diverse implications of this transformation on refugees, who often face severe restrictions to economic activity, financial inclusion, and a limited right to work. Particular consideration will be given to critical contributions that are rooted in empirical research and offer insights linking important debates in the international development literature on refugee economies, livelihoods, and digital work. Articles might address one of the following questions: What do particular case studies tell us about the unique relationship between forced displacement and digital economies? How does the inclusion of refugees, and a perspective grounded in their experience, change established views on digital economies and the future of decent work? How do digital economies reshape the role of work within increasingly prolonged conditions of forced displacement? What are the risks and opportunities of digital work for refugees? CfP: Graduate Colloquium on Digital Labour – 27-28 March 2020 – Milan, Italy

The European Network on Digital Labour<http://endl.network/> is an association of scholars working on various aspects of the relationship between work and digital technology. In its desire to integrate young scholars and foster collaborations with senior members, the network will host its third graduate colloquium, set to take place during the 2020 conference “Unboxing AI” in Milan, Italy. The event is co-organized by the Fondazione Feltrinelli with support from the Nexa Center for Internet and Society. Confirmed speakers include Jeremias Adams-Prassl (University of Oxford), Janine Berg (International Labour Organization), Nick Couldry (London School of Economics), Alessandro Delfanti (University of Toronto), Leopoldina Fortunati (University of Udine), Baruch Gottlieb (Berlin University of the Arts), Andrea Miconi (IULM University of Milan), and Phoebe Moore (University of Leicester). The upcoming colloquium welcomes all postgraduate students (master’s & Ph.D.) in different stages of their research who work on any topics related to computer-mediated work, platform economies, online value production, automation, robotics, and tech-enabled outsourcing. It aims to give junior researchers the chance to engage with other scholars working in similar areas of interest, discuss their current projects and methodological issues, and to receive advice on the thesis writing process and career prospects. Please note that, while the registration to the colloquium is free, the network cannot provide funding for travel or accommodation in Milan. The discussants of the doctoral colloquium are Juan Carlos de Martin (Polytechnic University of Turin) and Andrea Fumagalli (University of Pavia). ================================================================================================ REFRESH 2020 1st International Workshop on Real-life modeling in 5G networks and beyond - co-located with IEEE DCOSS 2020 ================================================================================================ Scope and Overview: The economic and societal potential of emerging 5G and cyber-physical social systems is vastly greater than what has been realized so far, and major investments are being made worldwide to develop the corresponding science and technology. The Future Internet paradigm, the proliferation of emerging networks and architectures, wireless access technologies and multi-homing smart devices are evolving towards a competitive environment, where users and devices have access to various resources, while their behaviors become strongly interdependent. This fact demands and motivates the development of user-centric resource management and optimization frameworks, which enable user's self-optimization and autonomy. This vision is further motivated and supported by the convergence of various emerging technologies enabling Cyber-Physical Systems operation, including 5G/B5G technologies, Internet of Things (IoT), Mobile Edge Computing and Software Defined Networking, all targeting flexibility and efficiency. To deal with the involved complexity, and driven by the requirements of autonomy and scalability, distributed resource orchestration approaches appear as a necessity rather than a desire. The REFRESH Workshop aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of real-life modeling in 5G networks and beyond. This year's edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of wireless networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as, but not limited to: mobile edge computing, Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, public safety networks, dynamic spectrum utilization, smart grid communications, wireless power communication, green wireless networks, information-centric wireless networks. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research and development approaches and results, as well as work-in-progress papers. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for 5G networks and beyond. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. New publication of the Institute of Network Cultures: It Happened on Tinder Reflections and Studies on Internet-Infused Dating Edited by: Amir Hetsroni and Meriç Tuncez https://networkcultures.org/blog/publication/it-happened-on-tinder/ This volume brings together articles from different parts of the globe that describe, question, test and criticize innovations and recent developments in online dating. Using quantitative as well as qualitative techniques the studies included in the book examine the impact of gender, personality traits, app interface and design, and culture on success and failure in online courtship. Among the issues dealt here are ghosting, sex emoticons, body presentation in the virtual universe, dime dating, religious courtship and more. Amir Hetsroni is a professor in the Department of Media and Visual Arts at Koç University in Turkey. He is the author/editor of four books and nearly 100 journal articles and book chapters. He is also a media celebrity in his home country, Israel, where he takes part in reality shows as a consultant and commentator, and takes an active role in anti-censorship campaigns. He failed to find love in online dating, but did not lose hope. Meriç Tuncez, a PhD candidate in Design, Technology, Society program at Koç University, received his BA in Business Administration from Koç University, and received his M.F.A. in Media and Design from Bilkent University. His research interests span interactions with artificial intelligence and virtual assistants including humanness, mental state, emotion, intention, sociality and morality attributions to artificial intelligence, and online dating. He is also a digital artist and his artworks were included in a recent interdisciplinary exhibition about coincidences called Yaratan Disiplinler: Tesadüfler by Tasarım Atölyesi Kadıköy (TAK) in Istanbul. His first real love was exclusively on the net but later he realized that he was being catfished by that person for the duration of a year.
