In recent years streaming television services have been increasing in number and diversity worldwide. Specifically, many subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services have endeavoured to produce their original content and/or expanding into regional and international markets. Such ongoing development has challenged industrial practices in production and distribution of television on national, regional and global scales. How can we account for these evolving industrial dynamics of global internet television? Focusing on the East Asian cultural contexts, this international conference seeks to better understand the emerging ecology of internet-distributed television – SVODs in particular – in East Asia. We invite submission of proposals that investigate the development of this ecology and its implications for the content production and distribution on national and regional levels. We are interested in questions such as: which SVODs are popular in respective markets? What kinds of business models do they employ and why? To what extent Netflix may challenge the local media industries in East Asia? What kinds of online television portals other than SVODs are emerging? How do content producers and distributors across East Asia respond to the changing industrial conditions? With these concerns in mind, possible topics for the proposals include, but are not limited to: • Overview of the national or regional ecology of internet-distributed television in East Asia • Popularity and unpopularity of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and other local and transnational SVODs in East Asia • Impact of Netflix on content production, distribution, and consumption in specific East Asian markets • Business models of SVODs or other internet television portals • The infrastructural and market conditions of SVOD services in respective East Asian markets • National and transnational policy debates on content distribution, local content quotas, censorship, taxes, etc. • The regulations in different territories regarding SVOD and other online television services • International collaboration of content production between East Asian countries and regions • Changing conditions in television trades and licensing • Public debates about domestic audiences’ preferences for local and foreign television content • Difficulties and opportunities provided by SVODs and other online television services for local productions • de-westernizing media industry studies on SVODs and other online television services • Online piracy of media content and the international intellectual property system • Aesthetic or narrative analysis of television programs developed for Netflix or other local or international online portals • Production and commission of original content for SVODs and other online portals • The cultural and social position of national broadcast television in the changing media ecology in respective East Asian countries/regions *Submission* The title and abstract (up to 300 words) together with a short bio of the author(s) in English (or Japanese) should be submitted to cfp.svodsinasia(a)gmail.com by 1 September 2019 (subject heading: SVODs in Asia). CALL FOR PAPERS: The Velvet Light Trap #86—Queerness in the Digital Age Queer Media and the Digital Digital technology has altered all aspects of media cultures, including questions of identity that can affect everything from the production of texts, their content, their distribution, their reception, and more. At the same time, popular and academic understandings of queerness have evolved to incorporate expanding ideas of gender, sexuality, race, disability, ethnicity, and other identity categories. Not only has digital technology altered the ways in which queerness can be articulated, but queer media has also shaped the form and reception of digital texts. Understanding queerness in the digital age requires us to account for the changes in both queer studies and digital studies. For this issue, we welcome submissions that examine the ways in which queerness and digital media interact. These articles could include, but are not limited to, placing media texts in a broader cultural context that speaks to the nature of queerness in the digital age, contextualizing the relationship between queer audiences and media texts, or analyzing queer digital production cultures. Submissions could also consider queerness from the perspective of platformization, fandoms and audience reception, as well as digital media ecologies. What is the impact of social media on queer practices and identities? How does the rising visibility of queer identities leave queers, especially queers of color, vulnerable to exploitation or attack? How do queer creators utilize and navigate ever-changing media ecosystem? We invite submissions that investigate these or other questions related to queerness in the digital age through any applicable methodological or theoretical approaches. Potential Submission Themes • The evolution of queer theory and its application to media (e.g. queer of color critique, trans theory, crip theory) • Queerness, race and ethnicity (e.g. Afrofuturism, disidentification, queer indigenous studies) • Digital technology, queer bodies, and disability • Changing receptions in queer audiences and queer-targeted media • Queer modes of fandom • Creators, star texts, and micro-celebrities • Digital pornography studies • Articulations of queerness in digital television (e.g. streaming platforms, webseries, second-screen engagement) • Queerness in digital games • The democratization of digital cinema (or lack thereof) • Queer comics, webcomics, and digital distribution • Non-fiction media aesthetics and portrayals of queerness • Queer podcast networks, series, and hosts • Social Media, Online Communities, and Dating Apps (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Patreon, Tumblr, Her, Grindr, Scruff, OnlyFans) • Queer youth and the disruption of the coming out narrative • Assimilation and respectability politics (e.g. Neoliberalism, homonormativity, homonationalism) • Queer music production, distribution, and algorithmic discovery • Modes of queer exhibition (e.g. film festivals, museums and galleries, community spaces) • Reflections on what “queer” or “queer studies” might mean or signify in the digital age Submission Guidelines Submissions should be between 6,000– 7,500 words (approximately 20-25 pages double-spaced), formatted in Chicago style. Please submit an electronic copy of the paper, along with a one-page abstract (no more than 100 words), both saved as Microsoft Word files. While images are not required for submissions, if your submission includes images, please ensure that they are high resolution and included as an image file separate from your Word files. Call for Papers CPDP2020 - Data Protection and Artificial Intelligence CPDP (Computers, Privacy and Data Protection) is an annual three-day conference devoted to privacy and data protection. The 13th edition of CPDP will be held on 22-24 January 2020 in Brussels. Whilst a number of speakers are specifically invited by the conference, several slots remain open to application through an annual call for papers. The CPDP2020 Call for Papers is addressed to all researchers who wish to present their papers at the next CPDP conference. The call is split into two different tracks. The first is dedicated to experienced researchers (i.e. postdoctoral researchers, professors etc.), while the second welcomes PhD students and other junior researchers. Contributions are welcome from all disciplines with perspectives on the themes of the conference. The dual-track structure of the CPDP2020 Call for Papers aims to meet the increasing interest of researchers - from all levels and from multiple disciplines - in CPDP and their expectations in terms of academic feedback and exchange.
