Volume 8, Issue 2 Title: Science and Health Controversies on Digital Media: News, Mis/Disinformation and Public Engagement Editor(s): An Nguyen (Bournemouth University, UK) Submission of Abstracts: 1-15 August 2019 Submission of Full Papers: 15-31 January 2020 Publication of the Issue: June 2020 Information: Digital media open a vast array of avenues for lay people to engage with news, information and debates about the science and health issues that shape their private and public life. Many of these are innovative and effective in providing users with the voices to go with their eyes and ears about science issues. At the same time, however, recent climate-change-denial, anti-vaccination, pro-creationism and other campaigns show that digital media could become a fertile land for vested interests to spread mis-and dis-information, stimulate uncivil discussions and engender ill-informed, dangerous public decisions. On social networking sites, for example, people’s values, beliefs and emotions are often brought to the forefront—with the substantial aid of algorithms—and/or skillfully deployed for political, commercial and/or religious gains, at the expense of scientific evidence. This thematic issue invites scholarly investigations—critical, interpretive or empirical—into the above and their implications for public engagement with scientific evidence. We welcome contributions on the pros and cons of digital media in science debates and how they might impact public understanding, attitudes and actions regarding science and health issues. Topics might include, but are not limited to, issues around the following broad questions: 1. How is mis/disinformation around science controversies produced, distributed and redistributed in digital environments? 2. In what ways do laypeople use social media to obtain news, gain knowledge and/or engage with science controversies—and with what effects? 3. How do factual knowledge and scientific evidence interact with emotions and values/beliefs in the fast-moving digital world to shape public engagement with science controversies? 4. Is the authority of the scientific expert declining faster in social platforms than other media environments? Why or why not? 5. What techniques and strategies can the news media employ to tackle the dark sides of digital technologies in public communication of controversial science issues? 6. What are the potential mechanisms for the news media, the science establishment and the civil society to cooperate in the fight against science mis/disinformation online? CfP: Graduate Colloquium on Digital Labour – University of Toronto, October 3, 2019<http://endl.network/indl-2-graduate-colloquium-on-digital-labour/> The International Network on Digital Labour is an association of scholars working on the different aspects of the relation between work and digital technology. In its desire to integrate young scholars and foster collaborations with senior members, the network has launched a first series of graduate colloquia to take place during its 2019 events. The 1st INDL colloquium was part of the conference "Microwork platforms"<http://endl.network/events/conferences/indl-1-conference/> that we organized in Paris in June. This second call for participants aims to select papers to be presented during a workshop on "Robots and Labour" that will take place at the University of Toronto on October 3rd. The colloquium will welcome all graduate students (master's & PhD) in different stages of their research who work on the many aspects of computer-mediated work, platform economies, online value production, automation, robotics, and tech-enabled outsourcing. It aims to give junior researchers the chance to interact with other scholars working in similar areas of interest, and discuss their current projects, methodological issues and receive advice on the thesis writing process and career prospects. Please note that, while the registration to the colloquium is free, the network cannot provide funding for travel or accommodation in Toronto. Dear colleagues, The IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies (TLT at https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/RecentIssue.jsp?punumber=4620076) is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced scholars based in Africa and the Middle East to serve as Associate Editors of the journal. Candidates for the AE roles must be well-established and reputable scholars with a substantial track record of research publications and citations in learning technologies (e.g., as evidenced by h-index and other relevant metrics). Prior experience serving in an editorial capacity for a peer-reviewed journal will be looked upon favorably, although this is not a requirement. Importantly, because TLT differs from most other educational technology journals in that it straddles the disciplines of computer science and education—as reflected by its inclusion in both the Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index—preference will be given to candidates who possess a strong technical background (e.g., qualifications in computer science, computer engineering, or a cognate field) in addition to educational/learning sciences research experience and expertise. CALL FOR PAPERS The 14th Workshop on Challenged Networks (CHANTS 2019) http://conferences.ece.unm.edu/chants2019/ colocated with ACM Mobicom 2019, the 25th Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking Oct 21-25, Los Cabos, Mexico Scope and Overview Challenged networks comprise those situations where communication is desired, but traditional Internet architectures fail to provide it effectively. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing as well as challenged IoT. CHANTS builds on the success of the thirteen previous CHANTS workshops and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of challenged networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as autonomous driving, underwater robots, emergency response operations, underground mining, interplanetary missions, polar research and unmanned aerial vehicles. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for challenged networks. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. This workshop deals with current research on the interplay between collaboration and personalization issues for supporting intelligent learning environments. Its aim is to provide a forum for discussing new trends and initiatives in this area, including research about the planning, development, application, and evaluation of intelligent learning environments, where people can learn together in a personalized way through social interaction with other learners. The workshop is targeted at academic researchers, developers, educationists and practitioners interested in innovative uses of social media and adaptation techniques for the advancement of intelligent learning environments.
