Hi, Looking for some help. An interdisc. program at my university is thinking about putting on a 'mini-conference' (one or two days) on the general subject of "How has the Web/internet changed practices in various academic fields" ....the fields are wide-open. "Practices" would likely include such things as: writing in the field; review/publication in the field; hiring into departments (and the split often opened among dept colelagues when depts. hire "internet researchers" 'traditional' depts.); and plenty of other things, of course. Indeed any ideas you might have related to topics this mini-confernece should explore would be welcome. Very broad at the moment, obviously, but the folks in this program are wondering if there have been any conferences on this topic that you all might know of (a URL would be helpful) or conferences forthcoming. In short, they don't want to re-invent the wheel; and 2) they are looking for possible speakers who really have some interesting things to say about the topic -- which also might take up academic listservs, moos, chat spaces, web sites, networks and so on and how it they have changed/will change futher particular academic disciplines. Call for papers: Designing Privacy Enhancing Technologies

CALL FOR PAPERS WORKSHOP ON PRIVACY ENHANCING TECHNOLOGIES 2002 Apr 14-15, 2002 San Francisco, CA, USA Workshop web site: http://www.pet2002.org/ Privacy and anonymity are increasingly important in the online world. Corporations and governments are starting to realize their power to track users and their behavior, and restrict the ability to publish or retrieve documents. Approaches to protecting individuals, groups, and even companies and governments from such profiling and censorship have included decentralization, encryption, and distributed trust. Building on the success of the first anonymity and unobservability workshop (LNCS 2009, held in Berkeley in July 2000), this second workshop addresses the design and realization of such anonymity and anti-censorship services for the Internet and other communication networks. We are holding this workshop adjacent to the Twelfth Conference on Computers, Freedom, and Privacy (CFP2002) for convenience, but we are not affiliated with that conference. The workshop seeks submissions from academia and industry presenting novel research on all theoretical and practical aspects of privacy technologies, as well as experimental studies of fielded systems. We encourage submissions from other communities such as law and business that present these communities' perspectives on technological issues. The title is "Computer Supported Social Networks: Audience-centric Online Community Implementation." http://georgetown.edu/faculty/dca4/publications.html Short Abstract: Commercial, non-profit, and grassroots organizations see potential benefit is using online community as a mechanism for attracting audiences to their Internet services, retaining the interest of existing customers, and growing the value of their revenue potential (Hagel and Armstrong, 1997). However, these audiences and customer groups are unlike early online community members, which suggests that implementing online communities for these people may be fraught with issues not encountered in the early years of online community development. This research is a case study of the development of an online community targeted at a specific audience. This audience, North American mid-life career changers, is like many audiences. They share specific common interests and needs, but lack existing communities to support those interests and needs and have few expectations about forming such mutually beneficial relationships online. From this case study research, a model for audience-centric online community implementation is proposed. The model provides guidelines to establish weak-tie, computer-mediated social networks for problem solving and fact finding. The research provides insights into what must be known about this audience to develop an appropriate online community to address its common needs and motivate members to participate. It demonstrates how audience needs and requirements may be translated into online community technology, content, and functionality. It explores the economic structures and financial issues that affect audience-centric online communities that have membership growth and financial sustainability needs. Another new publication of interest by one of my colleagues who is studies the use of online communty in the health field appeared recently in the Communications Journal. Hi: The papers in Science and Nature that describe the work that Dr. Monaco mentioned can be found at http://www.ist.psu.edu/faculty_pages/giles/publications/ Dynamically generated pages are hard to count and are usually not counted. We now estimate today from growth patterns that there are about 4 to 5 billion publicly indexable web pages. Google seems to have the largest database. Any index generated by a search engine is usually not counted as a web page. Estimates of the dark web seem to based on the capture/capture method discussed in our Science paper and are probably under-estimated due to the innate limitations of this approach. Duplicate pages are hard to eliminate but much algorithmic work has gone into recognizing them. This is still an open issue however. Furthermore, one can argue that some near duplicates should be counted.
