Re: new media and shock
by Stephanie Kent 19 Jan '09

19 Jan '09

Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. Shock, by definition, puts one in a state of non-responsiveness; the challenge may be the degree to which that lack of response gets carried over or continued into the return to the mundane, especially after the state-of-shock has worn off. best, steph http://www.reflexivity.us On Jul 10, 2005, at 3:07 PM, air-l-aoir.org-request(a)listserv.aoir.org wrote: > Hello all--a colleague of mine asked me if I could help him with the > following question. AOIR on AUT
by Derek McMillan 26 May '06

LOL. I am amused by the idea that supporting AUT would be political but opposing them is OK because it is non-political. This is doubleplusungood doublethink isn't it. FWIW I support AUT.There is an advert on British TV to encourage people to vote It says "If you don't do politics, you don't do anything." and suggests that if you are interested in the world around you then you are de facto interested in politics. I favour a boycott of Israel, not because of its effect of otherwise on the brutal oppression of the Palestinians but because we do not have to be accomplices in that brutal oppression and a boycott is a non-violent civilised way to express that. You have only to listen to the intemperate language with which the Israeli right has responded - rejecting AUT as irrelevant and in the same breath denouncing them as terrorists - to see that it is having an effect. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Internet adoption rates by country and age: data sources?
by catherine middleton 08 May '06

08 May '06

Hello all, I'm looking for internet adoption rates on a national basis, breaking out adoption patterns by age. Any suggestions as to where to find these data would be most appreciated. I don't have a specific list of countries I'm interested in, at this point I'm just trying to see what is available. I am aware of the OECD and ITU internet adoption data, but as far as I know neither provides a breakdown by age of adopter. For anyone interested in this in the Canadian context, these data are found in the Household Internet Use survey, conducted by Statistics Canada from 1997-2003. It tracks household adoption only, so the age data refers to the age of the head of household rather than to individual adopters. Thanks for your help. catherine middleton cmiddlet(a)ryerson.ca

Message board usage - and a reflection on changing research themes
by David Brake 27 Dec '05

27 Dec '05

I've been asked to find out among other things what kinds of Internet bulletin boards are most used by young people and what proportion of young people visit them. I thought this kind of thing would be fairly easy to find out - after all bulletin boards/message boards/usenet were among the most studied forms of Internet use in the early days. But I am finding it surprisingly difficult to get this information as current surveys like the Pew and OxIS ones don't seem to track bulletin board use or virtual community participation at all (except insofar as it might be included in uses like "seeking sport information"). Is it because kids these days are all just using IM and writing Xanga blogs or do we only think this because we don't ask them about this kind of use any more? Can anyone help with my statistical questions? And more generally does anyone else agree that as we keep chasing each new phenomenon (file sharing, IM, blogging, social network software) we risk losing track altogether of still extant and important practices (affinity group message board or mailing list use for example - or MUD use?) If these uses are indeed being displaced by other uses shouldn't we at least have a crack at measuring them so we can be sure they are gone so we can chart their decline as well as their rise? --- David Brake, Doctoral Student in Media and Communications, London School of Economics & Political Science <http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/media@lse/study/ mPhilPhDMediaAndCommunications.htm> Also see http://davidbrake.org/ (home page), http://blog.org/ (personal weblog) and http://get.to/lseblog (academic groupblog) Author of Dealing With E-Mail - <http://davidbrake.org/ dealingwithemail/> callto://DavidBrake (Skype.com's Instant Messenger and net phone)

pinkett scores; trump, king flub blogs
by Barry Wellman 22 Dec '05

22 Dec '05

Probably most readers of these lists know by now that one of our own Internet-Society people, Randal Pinket, won The Apprentice last week -- the lucrative and dubious pleasure of working in Donald Trump's Empire. Randal got his PhD from Sloan School of Business, MIT, and worked with Keith Hampton on his eNeighbors project. Possibly like me, you met Randal at a conference. What you may not have seen is this dialogue between The Donald and TV celeb interviewer Larry King December 19, 2005. King: I don't even know how to touch a blog. Do you know how to blog? ... Do you know how to reach a blogger? Trump: I have no idea. Everybody that works for me knows. Me? I have no interest. King: I have no idea how to reach a blogger. I've never sent an e-mail. I don't know what I'm doing." Source: Rick McGinnis, "Tube Talk." Toronto Metro, 21Dec05: 41 (rick.mcginnis(a)metronews.ca) PS: The subject was blog talk about whether Randal being an African-American had anything to do with his victory. identity readings?
by Nathaniel Poor 21 Dec '05

21 Dec '05

hello group anybody know of a good online identity piece for a 400-level class? 20-25 pages? recent? I like some of Turkle's chapters for this, but they're so old they talk about MUDs and such and instead of having the students focus on online identity issues they end up rejecting the entire thing because they don't understand what a MUD is and it is very foreign to their online experience so if there was something more recent... something like "here is identity.... here is how online identity can be different and why" (so yeah sort of intro) but academic! (yes, I'm building syllabi...) oh, and something about facebook they all know what it is (all the freshman at Albion had accounts within the first two weeks of school!) but something that put an academic spin on it looks at it through the lens of THEORY!!!! something like that... thanks I hope everyone's end of term went well (or is continuing to do so) ^_^ ndp... --------------------------------------------- Nathaniel Poor, Ph.D. www.umich.edu/~natpoor Visiting Assistant Professor Communication Studies Dept.
