"Big Brother"
by Derek McMillan 23 Jun '05

23 Jun '05

The phrase "Big Brother" has been hijacked as a title for an increasingly tacky piece of exploitation TV but the original meaning of the term is still alive. The music corporations are boasting about finding a teenage girl who has been downloading music so that the corporations can now prosecute her mother. The media report with a straight face the idea that downloading will ruin the business. (Just as video recorders ruined the business or taping music off the wireless ruined the business presumably.) There has not been a peep of protest about the invasion of the teenager's privacy by the corporations. It is OK for the corporations to know the contents of everyone's computer "for their own good" so to speak. At least they have dropped the laughable - "if you download a tune you are funding terrorism" line which was greeted with sceptical derision whenever they broadcast it. On the TV there are a series of public service adverts threatening people without licences for watching TV and threatening people who work while signing for benefit. In both the message is the same "we know all about you, we are coming to get you." This is New Labour's image of a caring society. The BBC dismisses anyone who opposes these measures as "civil libertarians" to create the impression that ordinary people are uninterested in liberty or privacy and such interests are just the province of some special interest group of "civil libertarians". The corporations openly boast about their infringements of our liberty and the government joins in the chorus. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. CFP for Special Issue on International Outsourcing (IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication)
by St-Amant, Kirk 22 Jun '05

22 Jun '05

Call for Papers Special issue of IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication to focus on "Examining International Outsourcing: Perspectives, Practices, and Projections" Guest Editor: Kirk St.Amant Texas Tech University Department of English Deadline for Abstracts: October 1, 2005 International outsourcing (or offshoring) has become a topic of increased interest and concern, primarily because of the effects it is having on the nature of knowledge-based work. While a great deal has been written on the effects of international outsourcing in relation to the information technology (IT) and the customer service industries, relatively little has been published on the effects international outsourcing is having on professional communication. Similarly, relatively little has been written on how international outsourcing practices might change the nature of specific technical communication practices or change the field in general. Such perspectives, however, are essential to technical communicators who must re-think the nature of their jobs in an age of global business practices. Additionally, such perspectives are important for educators who train the technical communicators of tomorrow. This special issue will examine how international outsourcing is affecting professional and educational practices in technical communication and how international outsourcing could shape future practices in both areas. TOPICS Topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited to, the following Which technical fields seem poised to engage in large-scale international outsourcing in the future? What implications will such outsourcing have for professional and technical communication in related industries? What professional or technical communication tasks or practices are particularly susceptible to international outsourcing? What lessons can professional or technical communicators learn from how international outsourcing has affected other professional fields? Which nations seem poised to become international outsourcing providers for professional or technical communication tasks? How well prepared are workers in those nations to perform such tasks? How have international outsourcing practices in other fields shaped the ways in which professional or technical communicators interact with subject matter experts (SMEs) in different nations? What technology developments (particularly online communication technologies) can facilitate the international outsourcing of professional or technical communication practices? What developments (particularly in online communication technologies)could affect how professional or technical communicators interact with subject matter expetts (SMEs) located in other nations? Which international legal factors affect international outsourcing practices? How do professional or technical communicators fit into that legal framework? How should educational practices change to train professional or technical communicators to work effectively in an environment of international outsourcing? What implications does online education have for the training of professional technical communicators in other nations? How might such situations affect the outsourcing of professional or technical communication practices? SUBMISSIONS Please email abstracts (200-500 words) to Kirk St.Amant at kirk.st-amant(a)ttu.edu Please include the following information in your abstract: Title of the proposed article Name, institutional affiliation, and contact information for author(s) Overview of proposed article topic Discussion of the contribution this article will make to research, teaching, or other professional practices in the field of technical communication TIMELINE Abstracts due: October 1, 2005 Invitation to submit full papers for peer review: October 15, 2005 Full papers due: December15, 2005 NOTE: The invitation to submit full papers for review does not mean a paper has been accepted for publications. Rather, all full papers will undergo a peer review process, the results of which will be used to determine if the paper will be published in this special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication. QUESTIONS Questions should be emailed to the Kirk St.Amant at kirk.st-amant(a)ttu.edu, and prospective contributors are welcome to contact the guest editor to discuss prospective topics for an article.

Re: [Air-l] fantasy (American)football league?

Does it cost money? Andrew Herman, Ph. D. Associate Professor Department of Communication Studies Wilfrid Laurier University Waterloo, Ontario N2L 3C5 CANADA 519 884-1970 x3693 >>> jhuns(a)vt.edu 06/21/05 7:39 PM >>> I waste some time each fall pursuing fantasy football. As an experiment of sorts, this year, I've upped the ante. If you are interested in pursuing such activities as leisure or research, I've created a fantasy football league on yahoo. It currently has a maximum teams. If you'd like to play send an email to jhuns(a)vt.edu and I'll send you the info to join up. The general spirit should be one of 'good fun' and 'general interest' . I've tried to keep things very simple, but still require a modicum of interest in the sport, though yahoo nfl will provide almost any knowledge you'd need to be successful, whatever that would be in that term. so if you want to play fantasy (american)football via the internet this fall, for little or no reason other than perhaps seeing how it all works or figuring out the sport or.... game... or.... whatever, join up, it is almost guaranteed that it will be fun if not funny and a possibly even a learning experience. jeremy hunsinger jhuns(a)vt.edu www.cddc.vt.edu jeremy.tmttlt.com www.tmttlt.com () ascii ribbon campaign - against html mail /\ - against microsoft attachments http://www.aoir.org The Associatiion of Internet Researchers _______________________________________________ The Air-l-aoir.org(a)listserv.aoir.org mailing list is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers http://aoir.org Subscribe, change options or unsubscribe at: http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org Join the Association of Internet Researchers: http://www.aoir.org/

digital divide in use - more suggestions?
by Opgenhaffen Michaël 22 Jun '05

22 Jun '05

[Crossposted to DDN + AOIR, sorry for that!] Hello everybody, I'm doing research within the erea of internet and the digital divide (like many of you, i suppose ;-) ) Most of the literature treats the internet as one uniform medium. In reality, the internet exists of different applications like websites, usenet, listserv, blogs, email, IM, ... I was wondering if there exists some research about the consequences of this difference in use and it's relationship to the digital divide-theory. Most of the time, the digital divide is constraint to the difference in internet access, but the future will bring us perhaps only a difference in internet use (some only use general websites, while others use all different applications). The term 'digital divide in use' is somewhat what i'm looking for, but not exctly i guess. Also the term digital literacy is quite helpful ... Anyone more suggestions about literature? Or your opinion about this subject? Thanks in advance! Michaël -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: Deborah Elizabeth Finn [mailto:deborah.elizabeth.finn@gmail.com] Verzonden: za 4/06/2005 22:47 Aan: The Digital Divide Network discussion group CC: Onderwerp: [DDN] Bragging Rights in Boston (A version of this item is also available through my blog at <http://blog.deborah.elizabeth.finn.com/blog/_archives/2005/6/2/903714.html>; the blog version provides live links to more information about some of the people and organizations mentioned here.) Dear Colleagues, On Wednesday evening, the Boston 501 Tech Club had a record turnout of over 70 nonprofit techies! It was the largest gathering ever in the history of the regional 501 Tech Clubs. Here are a few factors that go into an event like this one: - We had a dedicated team of planners: Merove Heifetz of Earthwatch Institute (the outgoing convener of the Boston club), Beth Sousa of Families First (the incoming convener), Kathleen Sherwin of Tech Foundation, and yours truly. - The planners met several weeks in advance, to get acquainted in person, to brainstorm about desired outcomes, and to plan for the transition to a new convener. We then stayed in touch by email and conference call. - TechFoundation generously underwrote the cost of the venue, food, and drinks. Furthermore, Kathleen Sherwin, ably assisted by Colleen Higgins (also of TechFoundation), deployed her superlative skills as an event manager. - TechFoundation also generously underwrote my time as a consultant to bring various pieces of the puzzle together, and to do outreach to individuals and groups who may not have previously known about the Boston 501 Tech Club or considered attending one of its events. - The event was held outdoors at a time of year when most people crave a little fresh air and sunshire, and it didn't rain. - The venue was easily accessible by public transportation. (Parking was also available, which definitely counts for something in Harvard Square.) I'd summarize the most important take-aways in this way: - If you feed them, they will come. This costs money. - Events of this sort are labor intensive. Volunteers who have other full-time jobs can't be expected to do all the work. Hiring professionals costs money. - It's important for potential attendees to receive personal invitations (or to hear about the event) from people they know. However, it's also important not to overlook what we as the planners could take for granted: our region can boast of a first-rate talent pool of current and aspiring nonprofit techies. We have an abundance of philanthropic spirit, utopian vision, and technological genius here in Massachusetts. Rich in human capital, we desperately need the financial and institutional resources to bring it all together to serve the nonprofit sector. This new partnership between the Boston 501 Tech Club and TechFoundation may bring help to bring us to the tipping point. Go, team! Best regards from Deborah P.S. Full disclosure of financial relationship: I used to serve as TechFoundation's national nonprofit liaison officer and director of its Boston TechConnect program, and am currently working with TF on a consulting basis. How is the Internet bad for us?
by David Brake 21 Jun '05

21 Jun '05

Sorry - yet another collective picking of brains... As part of a literature review for a report I mentioned earlier (led by Sonia Livingstone and Andrea Millwood Hargrave) I am trying to pull together an overview of academic literature on the harms associated with Internet use. I am looking primarily for effects-centred literature and individual-level effects - things regulators might be reasonably expected to tackle - so macro-level theories are not what I am after. Here is a list of concerns I have come across in the literature so far. Can anyone suggest further areas where there has been research? Can anyone suggest concerns that haven't been researched but which need researching so we can recommend it? I would also be interested to receive further citations for any of the categories where I have indicated I haven't found much so far. I am aware this is a huge topic so I feel bound to have missed something... Note: this review will be freely downloadable online when it is finished and we hope will be a useful aid to both academics and regulators so please help if you can! Here are the categories of harm and offense I have found so far: Reinforcement of undesirable attitudes: * Anorexia * Hate group membership * suicide clubs Enabler of undesirable behavior: * Bullying (would like more lit) * Sexual harassment (would like more lit) * stalking (would like more lit) * Grooming of children by paedophiles (would like lit that provides quantitative evidence) Providing access to unsuitable/undesirable content * Porn * gambling (would like more lit) * alcohol/smoking and other anti-social advertising (would like more lit) To this I would add my personal favourite potential problem with the Information society: * The surveillance society'for your convenience and safety' (increased government and commercial surveillance and data mining related to your "public face") * The slow death of the privacy of your "private face" through increased public self-documentation and the self-documentation of others you interact with. What happens when significant numbers of us are cyborgs like Steve Mann http://wearcam.org/ and we're under continuous 'sousveillance'? My favourite book on the former issue is Garfinkel, S. (2000) Database Nation, O'Reilly, Cambridge but it is not an academic text. I would love to be able to say something in my lit review about either of these privacy issues but it is hard to measure the extent or the effects of such intrusion. Has anyone found any effects-based papers on either of these points? Or failing that could you recommend what you consider the key academic texts about the online privacy issue in general so I can cite them and add, "clearly more research is needed"? --- David Brake, Doctoral Student in Media and Communications, London School of Economics & Political Science <http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/media@lse/study/ mPhilPhDMediaAndCommunications.htm> Also see http://davidbrake.org/ (home page), http://blog.org/ (personal weblog) and http://get.to/lseblog (academic groupblog) Author of Dealing With E-Mail - <http://davidbrake.org/ dealingwithemail/> callto://DavidBrake (Skype.com's Instant Messenger and net phone) --- David Brake, Doctoral Student in Media and Communications, London School of Economics & Political Science <http://www.lse.ac.uk/collections/media@lse/study/ mPhilPhDMediaAndCommunications.htm> Also see http://davidbrake.org/ (home page), http://blog.org/ (personal weblog) and http://get.to/lseblog (academic groupblog) Author of Dealing With E-Mail - <http://davidbrake.org/ dealingwithemail/> callto://DavidBrake (Skype.com's Instant Messenger and net phone)

With largely a government/non-profit crowd expected <http://dowire.org/localedem> I want to introduce a little real-time tech world fun to this conference. Does anyone have recommendations on the best tools to use for: 1. Real-time chat - Stand alone option 2. Real-time chat IRC - Which server, which spyware free clients, other advice 3. Question Board - ability to add a question to the list and have people rank/second them in real-time 4. Anything else? We are planning for between 50 and 100 participants.
