"Big Brother"

The phrase "Big Brother" has been hijacked as a title for an increasingly tacky piece of exploitation TV but the original meaning of the term is still alive. The music corporations are boasting about finding a teenage girl who has been downloading music so that the corporations can now prosecute her mother. The media report with a straight face the idea that downloading will ruin the business. (Just as video recorders ruined the business or taping music off the wireless ruined the business presumably.) There has not been a peep of protest about the invasion of the teenager's privacy by the corporations. It is OK for the corporations to know the contents of everyone's computer "for their own good" so to speak. At least they have dropped the laughable - "if you download a tune you are funding terrorism" line which was greeted with sceptical derision whenever they broadcast it. On the TV there are a series of public service adverts threatening people without licences for watching TV and threatening people who work while signing for benefit. In both the message is the same "we know all about you, we are coming to get you." This is New Labour's image of a caring society. The BBC dismisses anyone who opposes these measures as "civil libertarians" to create the impression that ordinary people are uninterested in liberty or privacy and such interests are just the province of some special interest group of "civil libertarians". The corporations openly boast about their infringements of our liberty and the government joins in the chorus. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Call for Papers Special issue of IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication to focus on "Examining International Outsourcing: Perspectives, Practices, and Projections" Guest Editor: Kirk St.Amant Texas Tech University Department of English Deadline for Abstracts: October 1, 2005 International outsourcing (or offshoring) has become a topic of increased interest and concern, primarily because of the effects it is having on the nature of knowledge-based work. While a great deal has been written on the effects of international outsourcing in relation to the information technology (IT) and the customer service industries, relatively little has been published on the effects international outsourcing is having on professional communication. Similarly, relatively little has been written on how international outsourcing practices might change the nature of specific technical communication practices or change the field in general. Such perspectives, however, are essential to technical communicators who must re-think the nature of their jobs in an age of global business practices. Additionally, such perspectives are important for educators who train the technical communicators of tomorrow. This special issue will examine how international outsourcing is affecting professional and educational practices in technical communication and how international outsourcing could shape future practices in both areas. TOPICS Topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited to, the following Which technical fields seem poised to engage in large-scale international outsourcing in the future? What implications will such outsourcing have for professional and technical communication in related industries? What professional or technical communication tasks or practices are particularly susceptible to international outsourcing? digital divide in use - more suggestions?

[Crossposted to DDN + AOIR, sorry for that!] Hello everybody, I'm doing research within the erea of internet and the digital divide (like many of you, i suppose ;-) ) Most of the literature treats the internet as one uniform medium. In reality, the internet exists of different applications like websites, usenet, listserv, blogs, email, IM, ... I was wondering if there exists some research about the consequences of this difference in use and it's relationship to the digital divide-theory. Most of the time, the digital divide is constraint to the difference in internet access, but the future will bring us perhaps only a difference in internet use (some only use general websites, while others use all different applications). The term 'digital divide in use' is somewhat what i'm looking for, but not exctly i guess. Also the term digital literacy is quite helpful ... Anyone more suggestions about literature? Dear Colleagues, On Wednesday evening, the Boston 501 Tech Club had a record turnout of over 70 nonprofit techies! It was the largest gathering ever in the history of the regional 501 Tech Clubs. Here are a few factors that go into an event like this one: - We had a dedicated team of planners: Merove Heifetz of Earthwatch Institute (the outgoing convener of the Boston club), Beth Sousa of Families First (the incoming convener), Kathleen Sherwin of Tech Foundation, and yours truly. - The planners met several weeks in advance, to get acquainted in person, to brainstorm about desired outcomes, and to plan for the transition to a new convener. We then stayed in touch by email and conference call. - TechFoundation generously underwrote the cost of the venue, food, and drinks. Furthermore, Kathleen Sherwin, ably assisted by Colleen Higgins (also of TechFoundation), deployed her superlative skills as an event manager. - TechFoundation also generously underwrote my time as a consultant to bring various pieces of the puzzle together, and to do outreach to individuals and groups who may not have previously known about the Boston 501 Tech Club or considered attending one of its events. - The event was held outdoors at a time of year when most people crave a little fresh air and sunshire, and it didn't rain. - The venue was easily accessible by public transportation. (Parking was also available, which definitely counts for something in Harvard Square.) I'd summarize the most important take-aways in this way: - If you feed them, they will come. This costs money. - Events of this sort are labor intensive. Volunteers who have other full-time jobs can't be expected to do all the work. Hiring professionals costs money. - It's important for potential attendees to receive personal invitations (or to hear about the event) from people they know. However, it's also important not to overlook what we as the planners could take for granted: our region can boast of a first-rate talent pool of current and aspiring nonprofit techies. We have an abundance of philanthropic spirit, utopian vision, and technological genius here in Massachusetts. Rich in human capital, we desperately need the financial and institutional resources to bring it all together to serve the nonprofit sector. How is the Internet bad for us?

Sorry - yet another collective picking of brains... As part of a literature review for a report I mentioned earlier (led by Sonia Livingstone and Andrea Millwood Hargrave) I am trying to pull together an overview of academic literature on the harms associated with Internet use. I am looking primarily for effects-centred literature and individual-level effects - things regulators might be reasonably expected to tackle - so macro-level theories are not what I am after. Here is a list of concerns I have come across in the literature so far. Can anyone suggest further areas where there has been research? Can anyone suggest concerns that haven't been researched but which need researching so we can recommend it? I would also be interested to receive further citations for any of the categories where I have indicated I haven't found much so far. I am aware this is a huge topic so I feel bound to have missed something... Note: this review will be freely downloadable online when it is finished and we hope will be a useful aid to both academics and regulators so please help if you can! Here are the categories of harm and offense I have found so far: Reinforcement of undesirable attitudes: * Anorexia * Hate group membership * suicide clubs Enabler of undesirable behavior: * Bullying (would like more lit) * Sexual harassment (would like more lit) * stalking (would like more lit) * Grooming of children by paedophiles (would like lit that provides quantitative evidence) Providing access to unsuitable/undesirable content * Porn * gambling (would like more lit) * alcohol/smoking and other anti-social advertising (would like more lit) To this I would add my personal favourite potential problem with the Information society: * The surveillance society'for your convenience and safety' (increased government and commercial surveillance and data mining related to your "public face") * The slow death of the privacy of your "private face" through increased public self-documentation and the self-documentation of others you interact with. What happens when significant numbers of us are cyborgs like Steve Mann http://wearcam.org/ and we're under continuous 'sousveillance'? My favourite book on the former issue is Garfinkel, S. (2000) Database Nation, O'Reilly, Cambridge but it is not an academic text. I would love to be able to say something in my lit review about either of these privacy issues but it is hard to measure the extent or the effects of such intrusion. Has anyone found any effects-based papers on either of these points? Real-time tools success with in-person conferences

Does anyone have recommendations on the best tools to use for: 1. Real-time chat - Stand alone option 2. Real-time chat IRC - Which server, which spyware free clients, other advice 3.
