Hello, I am working currently on my dissertation on cultural differences in graphical design of university websites. My research is based on a framework of Gert Hofstede; I am creating a sample of sites from all 50 countries and regions. I am looking at governmental sites in researched countries for lists of colleges and universities. Most of the sites are in languages I could read, or they provide English versions, but some do not. Therefore I am looking for native (or close to native) speakers who could take a look at a governmental websites (I have URLs for each country) and tell me, if the site has a list of universities and colleges, and where is it located - it should take no more than 5-10 min. If you could help me with following languages, please contact me off list: - Arabic, - Spanish, - Persian, - Indonesian, - Malaysian, - Filipino, - Thai, - Turkish, - Serbian, - Slovenian. needed: berlitz for internetters

On our second honeymoon thru Italy. Do internet cafes isntead of post offices. Realize that traditional Berlitz phrasebook is not adequate. We need an internet for dummy travellers book. For example, how do you hit Ctl-Alt-Del in Italy? The answer is Ctrl-Alt-Canc. Where is the bloody question mark. Oh, next to the zero key, and right above the apostrophe' that I havent been able to find. And most important, where is the at key: @ There it is, but how do I hit it. A few nice people suggest Alt Gr with the key. Another topic (though controversial) that comes to mind is social isolation: does Internet use/overuse cause depression/loneliness/lack of social competence, and if so for whom, under what conditions, etc. Some of the readings in The Internet and Everyday Life address this (i.e., Nie, Hillygus, & Erbing; Quan-Haase, Wellman, Witte, & Hampton). Having been a lurker in this list for most of the time (and profiting loads from the "warm fuzzy feeling" of community and sharing knowledge in here) I've finally got a question that some of you might be able to help me with: I want to make a kind of database which I'll be able to feed with copies of blogposts, e-mails and some IRC-chat protocols. Have you got any suggestions what to use? Using Open Office seems a rather tedious way to do it and Excel definitely doesn't do the job for me. I haven't taken a lot of time to listen to the podcasts. You might want to preview several of them before sending students off to listen to them. Couch Award for Internet Research. This award honors student papers from all disciplines researching various aspects of the influence of the Internet on society. This year’s First Place Couch Award winner is Ericka Menchen, a graduate student in Communication Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, for her paper, "Blogger motivations: Power, pull, and positive feedback." Second place was awarded to Daniel A. Menchik and Xiaoli Tian, graduate students at The University of Chicago, Department of Sociology, for their paper, "The online layer: How email shapes social interactions." Third place was awarded to Matthew Lust, graduate student at Southern Utah University, Department of Sociology, for his paper, "Virtual Members and Real Interaction: The Internet and Online Sociation." These students will be invited to present their papers at the annual international conference of the Association of Internet Researchers to be held October 5-9 in Chicago. Winners also receive a cash award to assist with their continuing studies. The Couch Award honors the late Carl Couch, long-time professor of sociology at the University of Iowa and founder of the so-called “New Iowa School” of social research. As a leading proponent of “symbolic interactionism,” Couch insisted that humans are social actors who construct their social world. Couch was one of the first scholars to see computer-mediated communication not just as another way to transmit information, but as an arena in which people exchange symbols and form social interactions. The 2005 Couch Award Review Committee was composed of four scholars: Mark D. Johns of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa; Katherine M. Clegg Smith of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.; Lori Kendall of the State University of New York at Purchase, N.Y.; and Jodi O'Brien of Seattle University. The Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research is a non-profit organization established to promote the scholarship in sociological and communication inquiries begun by Carl Couch. The center provides networking opportunities and corroboration information for students and scholars who conduct social and Internet research, inspired by Couch's work involving qualitative laboratory research on information technologies and their impact on society.
