Judging by my own experience, an epidemic may be sweeping the northern world now in hot weather. Etiology: 1. Really hot weather > short shorts. 2. Laptop compuer (in my case a year 2000 HP Omnibook 500). 3. Tour de France > to using the laptop as a laptop so I can watch at the same time. 4. Paper deadline which leads me to press on and focus. Symptoms: 1. A non-trivial burn on my thighs. 2. Still feel it 24 hours later. 3. Medicine: copy of Comm of the ACM inserted between the laptop and my thighs. 4. Side-effects. None. CommACM did not get scorched. The Document Academy Invites: PROPOSALS FOR PAPERS, PRESENTATIONS AND DEMONSTRATIONS AT DOCAM '05 October 07-09th, 2005 South Hall School of Information Management and Systems, University of California, Berkeley The third annual meeting of The Document Academy on: Exploring the Nature and Role of Documents An International Conference on Document Research and Development in Sciences, Arts and Business DOCAM '05 is the third Annual meeting of the Document Academy, a loosely coupled international network of scholars, artists, professionals in various fields interested in the exploration of the document as a useful approach, concept and tool in Sciences, Arts, Business and Society in general. The aim of The Document Academy is to create a space for experimental and critical research on documents in a wide sense drawing on traditions and experiences around the world. It is organized and cosponsored by The Program of Documentation Studies, University of Tromsoe, Norway and The School of Information Management and Systems, University of California, Berkeley. A preliminary program is available online on the site of The Document Academy at http://thedocumentacademy.hum.uit.no/ Call for proposals of papers, presentations and demonstrations: Scholars, developers, artists and practitioners working with document research and development are invited to submit proposals for papers or other kinds of presentation for seminars and workshops AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and not later than by August 31 2005. We apologize for the all too late announcement. We welcome especially proposals for three kinds of papers and presentations : I. General papers for plenary sessions on: - DOCUMENT THEORY (Technical, Social and Cultural approaches, multi- and interdisciplinary theoretical work, conceptual problems etc.) - DOCUMENT HISTORY (Documentary traditions, future and emergent kinds of documents) - DOCUMENTS IN SOCIETY(The role of documents in society, documents in Every Day life) Each author or group of authors presenting a paper will have 30 minutes for presentation and 15 minutes for discussion. A full paper of no more than 7000 words should be delivered to the chair no later than November 1st 2005 in a pdf-format. II. I wonder if any security people have some tips for internet harassment for adults. Especially concerning ex-partners. I might be making a tip sheet and would like some resources to go by. I have some ideas but haven't written anything down yet. The people I am doing this for have done some searches on law enforcement pages and our own RCMP have at various times offered internet safety tips at their web site. I know the FBI also offer this. I wonder if any one has found anything specifically on this "partner assault and Internet safety tips" I just found this site on goggle http://www.owjn.org/concern.htm rather than just point out resources does anyone do research in this area? I am trying to hook up with an National(Canada) Research council member who does Information security in terms of computer science and find some legal studies research project for graduate school that might show the implications of this hard security research in terms of its legal-social affects. I was going to present a paper on the harms of hacking in Chicago but our panel did not get accepted. My paper is not all that great in terms of dealing with the question of the harms of hacking but you can read it for hacking cases anyways if you have time or inclination. Hi Peter and Gerald, Well, I keep a blog at museumfreak.livejournal.com that is sometimes related to disability. There's a number of community journals on LiveJournal which are related, but I think the highest traffic general one would be no_pity. Karen Nakamura, who studies the anthropology of disability in Japan, also has one at www.photoethnography.com/disability. LisyBabe has an excellent and funny one at http://lisybabe.blogspot.com. The Ragged Edge, an online newsletter (www.raggededge.com) keeps a blogroll and recently had an article on disability blogging. Gregor Wolbring (the STS thalidomider) I believe also keeps a blog. You totally took one of my future planned research topics (sitting as I am at the intersection of social software and disability studies). But maybe since you're in Australia I can still get away with doing it here. That's the difficulty--every time I come up with something to say, I do a literature search and somebody else has already said it! Kathy

Dear Mr. Khillis, a colleague of mine is exploring in her MA Diss. the problem "fear" in movies (sequencies). If German is one of your preferred languages to read, I can look for her eMail-address and tel. All the things written by the Frankfurt School people are "pragmatically" developped theoretical prospects from prevoius writings 19./20. c. Their only advantage is a "communicative" orientation, so they offer an "interface" to the different levels of media and business management today. But if you grab deeper you'll discover much more "Basics" in Simmels or Kirkegaards, Jaspers writings and of other guys with an own way/style of thinking. If you want to explore shock and fear as phenomena you have also to look at the philosophical expertise of Kirkegaard and the sociological one of Durkheim. Durkheim has even written a monograph on self suicide. 1990 I exposed critically different points of "communication philosophy" under the aspect "How much should we go further in the develepment of "digital experience" (the only problem is, the monograph is written in Bulgarian, but I am about to go further in my communication "philosophy" writing a small article till the end of this). So I would be very interested to exchange some expertise looking for a dialogue with someone "digitally" immersed in his everyday experience. Best Karim Paper 1 Authors: MacCormack, Alan, John Rusnak & Carliss Baldwin Title: Exploring the Structure of Complex Software Designs: An Empirical Study of Open Source and Proprietary Code (updated) http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/maccormackrusnakbaldwin2.pdf Abstract: This paper reports data from a study that seeks to characterize the differences in design structure between complex software products. In particular, we use Design Structure Matrices (DSMs) to map the dependencies between the elements of a design and define metrics that allow us to compare the structures of different designs. We first use these metrics to compare the architectures of two software products – the Linux operating system and the Mozilla web browser – that were developed via contrasting modes of organization: specifically, open source versus proprietary development. We then track the evolution of Mozilla, paying particular attention to a purposeful “re-design” effort that was undertaken with the intention of making the product more “modular.” We find significant differences in structure between Linux and the first version of Mozilla, suggesting that Linux had a more modular architecture. We also find that the redesign of Mozilla resulted in an architecture that was significantly more modular than that of its predecessor, and indeed, than that of Linux. Our results, while exploratory, are consistent with a view that different modes of organization are associated with designs that possess different structures. However, we also illustrate that purposeful managerial actions can have a large impact on structure. This latter result is important given recent moves to release proprietary software into the public domain. These moves are likely to fail unless the product possesses an architecture that facilitates participation. Our paper provides evidence that a tightly-coupled design can be adapted to meet this objective. Paper 2 Author: Vetter, Greg R Title: "Infectious" Open Source Software: Spreading Incentives or Promoting Resistance? http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/vetter2.pdf Abstract Some free or open source software infects other software with its licensing terms. Free or open source software is a copyright based licensing system. It typically allows modification and distribution on conditions such as source code availability, royalty-free use and other requirements. Some licenses require distribution of modifications under the same terms. A license is infectious when it has a strong scope for the modifications provision. The scope arises from a broad conception of software derivative works. A strong infectious ambit would apply itself to modified software, and to software intermixed or coupled with non-open-source software. Popular open source software, including the GNU/Linux operating system, uses a license with this feature. This Article assesses the efficacy of broad infectious license terms to determine their incentive effects for open source and proprietary software. The analysis doubts beneficial effects. Rather, on balance, such terms may produce incentives detrimental to interoperability and coexistence between open and proprietary code. As a result, open source licensing should precisely define infectious terms in order to support open source development without countervailing effects and misaligned incentives. Paper 3 Author: Vetter, Greg R Title: The Collaborative Integrity of Open-Source Software http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/vetter1.pdf Abstract: This Article analyzes legal protection for open-source software by comparing it to the venerable civil law tradition of moral rights. The comparison focuses on the moral right of integrity, with which one may object to mutilations of her work, even after having parted with the copyright and the object that embodies the work. The parallel apparatus in open-source licensing is conditional permission to use a copyrighted work. The conditions include that source code be available and that software use be royalty-free. These conditions facilitate open-source collaborative software development. At the heart of both systems is the right for creators to control the view that a work presents. In the open-source system, this is the Collaborative Integrity of open-source software. The history and legacy of moral rights help us better understand Collaborative Integrity in open-source software. The right of integrity in some international jurisdictions may apply to software, thus raising questions whether it hurts or helps open-source software. Building from these insights, this Article evaluates whether the Collaborative Integrity in open-source software deserves protection as a separate right, just as the right of integrity developed separately from pecuniary copyright in civil law jurisdictions. To all who intend to participate in AOIR.6 in Chicago: Consider joining our pre-conference workshop on the mobile Internet Wednesday October 5 (not October 6 as it says on the registration site) from 8am to 12pm. Participation in the workshop is free if you participate in AOIR.6 and you register for the workshop when you register for the conference. Please se description below. For further information / a longer description of the purpose and program please contact me stald(a)hum.ku.dk <mailto:stald@hum.ku.dk> or Anxo Roibas A.C.Roibas(a)bton.ac.uk <mailto:A.C.Roibas@bton.ac.uk> . Candidates should submit a brief position paper of 1-2 pages to the organisers if they intend to participate with a paper or a creative presentation or a problem proposal / problem scenario for discussion. We welcome presentations of creative uses or hands-on demonstrations of problems and potentials of the mobile Internet. Therefore we hope to see scholars as well as practitioners among the participants. The workshop will be open for other interested participants. Minimal number of participants is 7. Deadline for submissions of position papers and for sign-up for interested participants: According to AOIR.6 general deadlines. THE MOBILE INTERNET. Problems and potentials The workshop will explore theories and analysis and creative or technological presentations on socio-cultural aspects of the mobile Internet. The main focus is on topics regarding e.g. mobility, information exchange, interpersonal communication, surveillance, democratic potential, media convergence, user driven innovation, industrial interest in the mobile Internet, plus aspects of uses related to age, gender, and culture. Other suggestions are welcome.
