Online registration is now open for the sixth annual conference of the Association of Internet Researchers to be held in Chicago October 6 - 9, 2005 (with pre-conference workshops held on October 5, 2005) at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile hotel. To register for the conference and workshops go to: https://www.conted.vt.edu/ssl/aoir/index.lasso You will be able to pay the registration fees by credit card or by check. You can also at this time register for the conference banquet (taking place on Friday, October 7, at the Mid-America Club, on the 80th (top) floor of the Aon Center, Chicago's second tallest building, and the conference brunch (taking place on Sunday, October 9). [Vegetarian options will be available at both meals.] You may also register for a historical tour of Chicago's "L" elevated train (taking place on Saturday morning, October 8). Join others in an AoIR-only L car for a tour of some of the L system's oldest routes with the Chicago Transit Authority's historian. A link to online hotel registration is provided on the site after you have clicked the "submit" button and sent in your registration. We have negotiated the best possible rate from the hotel and encourage you to book a room early. As is the case with most all hotel-based conferences we have to meet the minimum occupancy with which we are able to use the hotel's meeting rooms and if we do not meet that occupancy rate then we'll have to increase the registration fees, to cover the additional meeting room cost. Internet and fun/joy/pleasure (Terri He)

As a teacher in a school in the UK, I find that the main perception of my pupils is of the internet as a source of fun. A large percentage (I can find out exact figures if this is of use to you) perceive the internet as a safe place to play and only see the "stranger danger" as a result of parental input. The parental input is usually based on a fear and lack of knowledge about the internet and media moral panic rather than an experienced danger to their children. In fact a lot of pupils are simply using MSN or Yahoo messenger to communicate with known friends rather than to communicate with total strangers. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. What's online is basically a word file converted to html. It is just my way of sending this out to everyone. Information was taken from the conference site a while ago. As has been noted in emails to presenters, individuals need to edit their information via the conference site. Particularly affiliations were truncated. Changes must be made by June 30th so we can correct the data we have as we make the program. Internet and fun/joy/pleasure (a follow-up)

Hi I've received quite a few responses from people on this list and I want to thank you all for that. Having read some of the messages and reread what I have posted yesterday, I guess I want to clarify a bit in regard to the fact that I am looking at the intersection of sexuality and technology. To be more precise, I am working on an online community participated by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people. I reckon that pron industry, hedonism and topics as such are very intriguing and important as cyberspace and sexuality almost always are closely connected in one way or the other. But when I relate fun/joy/pleasure with the Internet, I was really thinking about the kind of fun we get from exchanges on message boards, or joy and pleasure from online games. And of course, in these areas, sexuality can certainly play an important role. Sorry I wasn't clear enough in the previous post. But i guess when you has worked on somehting for some time, you easily forget about the obvious. Thanks again, Terri

Hi Terri: I am doing my dissertation on edutainment and convergence and how entertainment techniques can be utilized in higher education. My focus is different because I am looking at entertainment professionals as my subjects, not professors primarily. What is interesting is that you will find that the sex industry which is a $10 billion dollar industry according to AVN has driven much of the new digital technology in mainstream films, gaming, telephony, wireless and streaming technology. When George Lucas formally adopted digital filmmaking it became the new standard for production for many new filmmakers and old alike. He is making sizable contributions to education, and so is Bill Gates through his foundation with his wife. However, let's be clear, the real pioneers from both a business model and a creative standpoint are the porn producers who began with the 976 lines, cable television channels, pay per view movies in 80's, the 900 lines, websites, dvds, cds, data mining and ezines. In this decade, streaming, podcasting, mobicasting, videogames and swarmcasting and wireless on demand products are being marketed heavily in the porn industry and now bleeding into the mainstream. Isn't interesting to note that no one hears about the porn industry suing its customers like the RIAA for downloading their products. Yet one can go to any city worldwide and purchase pirated mainstream and porn movies on the streets. The question is why does mainstream media sue its customers for engaging in questionable ethical conduct while the porn industry, which many consider questionable, does not sue its customers. Porn revenues have been growing well, while mainstream movie and music revenues are suffering from pirating. Your research will eventually show you that the porn industry has been increasingly evolving its business model on how to work with and exploit the new digital technologies to make more money rather than spending too much time in the courtroom on copyright infringement lawsuits. The porn industry is more interested in the First Amendment and protecting it through court cases. Many could argue that mainstream media has forfeited civil liberties by not taking harder stances against government action over the past 20 years to protect civil liberties. Have fun, I hope we can help one another through the journey. I am interested in globalism effect on technology because it would appear that the Asian nations and the Europeans are moving with more diligence on wireless and new technologies than Americans. So far the ideas people and I myself have come up with are quite related to psychoanalytic approach in which joy (jouissance) and pleasure are two notions already prominent in that particular field. But what about fun? I think we need an anatomy of fun. And at the same time I reckon that it is a very American English word though it does travel to a host of other places/cultures all the time.
