I maintain a New York-specific blog called the New Yorkest at http://heath.vox.com/ -- and folks might also be interested in the project NYC Bloggers -- http://www.nycbloggers.com/ -- which maps blogs clustered by subway stop. The proprietor(s) would make for an interesting interview. Similarly, FeedMap -- http://www.feedmap.net/BlogMap/ -- might be worth checking out. Geocoding blogs and blog entries has yet to be widely adopted, but the moblogging movement offers directional evidence that it's more and more feasible. I'm not aware of any formal studies of location-based blogs, however. Would love to learn more. Warren Ellis credits me with coining the term "mapblogging," which is clumsy. At the 2006 South by Southwest Interactive conference, I moderated a panel that considered various approaches to digitally annotating physical space. Participants included representatives from Meetup, Dodgeball, Socialight, and the Yale School of Architecture. Universal Hub http://www.universalhub.com/ is a Boston-based blog that also includes links to quite a few blogs in the Boston metro area. I don't know if all of the blogs in the network are explicitly about the city/town, but at least some are. An interesting feature on the Universal Hub blog is a clickable T map where you can find blogs in the vicinity of T (subway) stops. -Kris -- ********** ********** ********** ********** Kris M. David Silver suggested our proposed journal be free to all, as JCMC seems to be. But even if online there are costs, which someone has to pay for with either bucks or sweat. I was the initial founder of _City & Community_, and am still on the board. Here are some ideas about the costs, from memory, excluding printing and postage. Managing editor (a grad student): $20K/year Editor (faculty member) teaching reduction -- if you're lucky, donated by your university. If you're not, my university would charge about $20K/year. Room -- will the university give it to you for free or charge rent. Furnishings: ibid Phone, xerox, etc. Figure $5K year. So a free journal is at least $25K a year in cost, and maybe twice that. Unless you can convince the university to subsidize and a student to work for free. Barry Wellman _____________________________________________________________________ Barry Wellman S.D. (Online) Student Development Theory
by Matthew Vanden Boogart 18 Dec '06

18 Dec '06

I'm interested in working with some individuals on exploring how classic student development theory applies to the online world. I'm personally interested in focusing on college-aged students, but I'm sure this will expand to younger/older populations. I think there's something to be said about how online lives impact current theories and potentially there is a new theory waiting to be created about the online life of students. If you'd be interested in participating in some discussions (listservs, perhaps online chats), please send me an email so I can work on setting some discussions up. Thanks! -matthew vb Matthew Vanden Boogart George Mason University matthewvb(a)gmail.com
