It welcomes papers from scholars who have conducted or are currently involved in conducting research on political participation and have tested (or defined) new measures or have revisited the classical ones in their studies of collective action and its expressions. In particular, the panel will address the following topics: new hypotheses and new theoretical perspectives for explaining current participation and involvement; the adaptation of classical concepts theoretically and methodologically for the study of new democracies; innovative operational definitions of concepts related to participation; typologies that include the traditional as well as "emerging" forms of individualized or collectivistic actions like political consumerism and modes of e-participation, and how the Internet and Internet-based methods can be used to study political participation. Guidelines and deadlines for participants Prospective participants should contact the chairs of the panel in which they are interested, bearing in mind that they will be expected to present a paper and should, therefore, be conducting advanced research in that particular area. Deadline for applications to panels: 31 January 2007. An application to participate should include a short summary of the proposed paper (maximum 250 words). Panel directors will inform applicants as to whether they have been accepted shortly after the deadline for applications has passed. Confirmation of participation by those accepted should be made to them as soon as possible, so that if there are any spaces, people on reserve lists can be offered places. Once accepted, paper givers should complete the GC3 form and send it to their panel chair as an email attachment.

journals already exist

My own feeling is that the more journals, the better. Even though I am have a conflict of interest as an editor of Information, Communication and Society. But I also must point out that "we" already have a bunch of journals right up our alley. iCS (the aforementioned) New Media & Society The Information and Society JCMC (online only): Journal of Computer Mediated Communication plus some more specialized ones. So there are already many places to publish. And as a frequent referee, I do not see the field swamped with too many good papers. In short, let there be 1 or 5 new journals, if there is energy and quality to sustain them, but please folks take advantage of what's out there already. another publication semi-trap

While we are on the subject of publication traps (re for $$s journals and conferences), I'd also suggest being wary of prospective editors calling for submissions to a forthcoming book in which they either: a) do not name a publisher b) name a publisher who tends to be expensive and not to market/distribute well. (I won't name names, but some of you may have an idea.) I know I've been burned in the past. For one example, our really nice "Immanent Internet" paper got buried, without distribution in North America (even on Amazon). And the book containing our "Connected Lives" paper never got to the American Sociological Association meetings. (Both on my website in earlier form.) I also realize that younger scholars, or those in some schools need to build a vitae, but I nevertheless persist in believing that our prime duty is to communicate to others. Intro, and question re maths quiz software

Hello all, I've been lurking on the list since joining AoIR for the Brisbane Conference in September, which was a great experience. I've just completed my first year of part-time PhD candidature at the University of New England in Armidale, Australia. My research is exploring internet communities of romance genre readers and writers and their perspectives and impact on the genre. Cultural studies, popular culture, cyber-culture, technology, literary and genre studies, and gender issues - yes, it's a large and exciting topic to explore, and will definitely keep me busy for a while! My other internet research interests revolve around my work as an educational developer, where I'm particularly interested in the use of social software and collaborative strategies in distance education at higher-ed level, and struggling with strategies for implementing these for large class sizes without tutorial support. However, just now I'm on a short time-frame to find some open-source, easy-to-use quiz software that we can use to develop a series of tests for assessing numeracy and mathematical skills at higher-education level. As well as mathematical functions, we're looking for automatic grading, feedback facility, reporting and analysis of results at individual and group level.
