Amy Bruckman has addressed the dissolution of a virtual community, see: Bruckman, A. & Jensen, C. (2002). The mystery of the death of Mediamoo: Seven years of evolution of an online community In K. Apologies for cross-posting. We hope that some of you may find this information of use. Please forward it to anyone you think might be interested. TAGS NETWORKS NARRATIVE Exploring the use of tagging and folksonomy in digital narrative research. * Tagging as a form of communication. * Folksonomy as an emergent knowledge network. * Narrative as a common ground. REQUEST FOR INFORMATION We are interested in the ways in which academic researchers studying narratives might develop people-to-people models of knowledge-sharing across disciplines. To that end, we are seeking researchers working in any type of narrative in any discipline to include in our database of projects and individuals. We would also welcome your suggestions for other researchers who might like to hear from us. REQUEST FOR PARTICIPATION We are especially interested in researchers who are willing to participate in our tagging experiments, due to take place Spring 2007. For more information please contact Bruce Mason as soon as possible at bmason01(a)dmu.ac.uk THE PROJECT Tags Networks Narrative is a unique speculative project exploring the potential for collaborative keyword tagging (folksonomy) in narrative research. We want to know: - What kinds of collaborative social network tools are available for the gathering and classification of information? - Which researchers are making online narratives the focus of study, and how are those projects categorised by discipline? - How can these researchers make effective use of social network tools to share knowledge and develop interdisciplinary collaborations? The project is based in the Institute of Creative Technologies (IOCT) at De Montfort University and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board from October 2006-September 2007. The Project Team comprises Professor Sue Thomas, Simon Mills and Bruce Mason. Website http://www.ioct.dmu.ac.uk/tnn/ If you'd like to be involved in the research, add your information to our database, or just be kept informed, please contact Bruce Mason at bmason01(a)dmu.ac.uk. Ellie, I came across the following book chapter some time ago, and it has a nice table for classifying communities by primary technology on pp. 22-23. http://www.ifsm.umbc.edu/~preece/paper/7%20Handbook%20v1.7Final.pdf Preece, J. and Diane Maloney-Krichmar (2003) Online Communities. In J. Jacko and A. Sears, A. (Eds.) Handbook of Human-Computer Interaction, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates Inc. Publishers. Mahwah: NJ. 596-620. Though, unfortunately I don't think the above work addresses community decay or dissolution. Hope this helps in some way. another panel for AoIR 8.0 - religion online
by Paul Teusner 22 Jan '07

22 Jan '07

Hi everyone, I know this is very short notice, but a couple of us guys are putting a panel submission together for the AoIR conference this year. If you think you may have an idea to present in the panel, please email me offline with a 150-200 word abstract that fits this panel theme below. It hasn't yet been submitted for approval, so we need contributions by next Monday (29 January). PLAYING RELIGION? Blogs and social networking sites are allowing more and more people to publish their thoughts, attitudes and aspirations about religion for the world to see. The result is an explosion of online forums and communities for users to access resources to develop a religious identity. Early research into online religious identity and community has focused on religion online as separate from offline religious practice, allowing critics to suggest that virtual religion leads to the fragmentation and corruption of religion. But how is religious identity actually played out in these new web locations? Do users of blogs and social networking applications come online to construct alternate religious identities, or to seek an identity that coheres with experiences and practices offline? This panel will present research into how individual and communal religious identity is played out in online places such as blogs, wikis and social networking sites, considering the new tools available to users to perform religion online and the extent to which offline faith practices may influence and be influenced by it. paul teusner fishers, surfers and casters www http://www.teusner.org/ skype callto://paulteusner

Re: [Air-l] where did you go, out; what did you do, nothing

This thread is interesting.. I admit not being very familiar with studies on teen behavior. But a few years ago I came across the following research, which offer interesting surveys of teens: Barbara Schneider and David Stevenson. (2000) The Ambitious Generation. *Observes teens in the 50s and early 90s. Laurence Steinberg. (1997) Beyond the Classroom. *Observes teens in the mid-to-late 80s. Conclusions in their research may not be as relevant when talking about Millennials and how they interact with their parents today, however.. I can't remember how the surveys address child-parent interactions.. This question is for anyone on our list.. maybe to add more context for the thread -- What are some recent/high-quality empirical studies addressing teen behavior? How can these kinds of studies inform us about how current teens may use the Web? - Paul -------------- Paul DiPerna Blau Exchange http://www.blauexchange.org email: pdiperna(a)blauexchange.org Online ID: http://claimid.com/pdiperna -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [Air-l] where did you go, out; what did you do, nothing From: danah boyd <aoir.z3z(a)danah.org> Date: Sun, January 21, 2007 4:49 am To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Cc: aoir list <air-l(a)aoir.org> What do you mean by terrify their parents? What are you referencing when you say that most teens engage in this behavior? I'm definitely seeing most American teens doing anything to avoid scrutiny but that doesn't mean that their choices don't terrify their parents. Amongst the more protective parents, _anything_ their teen does that is about social status management terrifies the parents. This creates a pretty bad cycle of deception and attempts to hide what's going on, much of which is "normal" teen behavior. One thing that is definitely at play is that there's a LOT more surveillance going on. Your teen-parent dialogue has been pretty much obliterated because parents aren't allowing their teens out without a justification... no justification, no going out. Plus, the phone is there as a constant leash. I am, sadly, finding that some teens engage in some pretty heart- wrenching activities to gain the attention of parents whose focus is elsewhere. This appears to cross SES. In particular, i've seen self- harm (primarily cutting) used for this purpose. Anything to make their parents pay attention to them... These stories kill me. I've also seen plenty of teens who are genuinely angry at their parents (much of this seems to stem from divorce or violence between the parents); their reaction to this can be self-destruction. I suspect that the reason for this is that the parents actually come together over the kid so when the kid is in crisis.. this motivates some teens to be in crisis. danah On Jan 20, 2007, at 1:27 PM, Barry Wellman wrote: > I am puzzled by the notion that most teens will do things to > terrify their > parents. This special issue of Religious Studies Review was organized to provide accurate, up-to-date information on websites useful to scholars studying religion. Contributors to the issue were asked two very general questions, posed as though they came from a student or a faculty member without a background in their field: -"What are some good websites for getting information about your topic of research?" -"Why are those websites reliable?" In addressing these questions, some contributors selected three or four websites that they believed were the best for this pursuit. In other cases, the contributors recognized themes or categories of online activities related to their field of study and then chose websites that were best suited for that particular theme. In both cases, contributors reviewed some of the most up-to-date and important websites, explaining why they are good sources, what type of information can be found at the site, and also some of the limitations or cautions that should be taken when using the Internet and the Web for their particular research. Topics covered in the special issue are: -Biblical studies -Christianity -Wicca -Witchcraft -Modern Paganism -New religious movements -Buddhism -Judaism -Islam -Hinduism -Religious statistics -Religion and the media Browse the abstracts online: www.blackwell-synergy.com/toc/rsr/32/4. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For full information about Religious Studies Review's subscriptions, electronic Table of Contents Alerts (E-Tocs), manuscript submission policy, and other details, visit http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/rsr or call Blackwell Publishing at 1-800-835-6770 (toll-free in North America), 1-781-388-8599 (U.S. office), or +44 1865 778315 (UK office). workshop part 2
by T. Kennedy 21 Jan '07

21 Jan '07

Hi Folks, I just wanted to thank everyone who came to our two brainstorming workshops at the Virtual Center for Digital Media last Thursday. We had a great turn out in both sessions - even though we had a griefer at the second session (what an interesting little display of what can happen in a virtual classroom). While both sessions were very different in their discussion of how to mod our existing seminar room, there were some really fabulous ideas. We would like to put these ideas into practice at our next workshop: Wednesday, January 24th 10am PST/SLT (Please note the time change). We will meet at the VCDM (139, 34, 25) for a brief chat and recap and then teleport everyone to our modding location. As an aside - one thing that we gleaned from the workshops (particularly from the second group) is that there is a lot to talk about with respect to virtual learning environments; many questions need to be asked and many things need to be teased out. I'm including the original post at the end of this email... Thanks! Tracy Hello fellow SL researchers and educators! My name is Tracy Kennedy - I'm a Virtual Research Assistant for the Center for Digital Media at Great Northern Way Campus in Vancouver, British Columbia. Some of you may remember me from last November when I posted an invitation to our Virtual Open House at the Virtual Center for Digital Media where we talked about a new Masters of Digital Media (MDM) program at the Great Northern Way Campus starting in September 2007. The open house was a great success and we are moving forward to put together some innovative ideas & educational tools in Second Life for our 'real life' curriculum. One initiative that we are currently working on is transforming traditional style educational spaces (for example lecture halls and seminar rooms) into student designed collaborative learning environments. We would like to move beyond conventional 'real life' pedagogical delivery modes and encourage students to actively engage and participate in their learning milieu by creating virtual learning spaces & places, and have students learn technical design skills (and modding) at the same time. Having said that, I'd like to invite you to a workshop we are having at the Virtual Center for Digital Media (139, 34, 25) on Thursday January 18th - 1pm PST/SLT (we've added 10am PST/SLT) where we will have a 'brainstorming' session to take the existing seminar room at the Virtual Center for Digital Media, and transform it into a dynamic, creative workspace that is collaboratively designed and built by a group of individuals - the intention is to show that a group of individuals can come together and create their own learning space. The following week (Wed Jan 24th 10am PST/SLT) we will put theory into practice and actually do the modifications and changes to the room to see what the end result might look like. However if you only want to come to the brainstorming session on the 18th - that's fine too - We're interested in your thoughts, ideas and expertise. If you have questions, please feel free to email me off-list at tracy(a)gnwc.ca.
