The OII is looking for a full-time Survey Research Fellow with an interest in research on the Internet and social relationships. The candidate should have training in one or more of the social sciences and specialised experience and skill in survey research and data analysis in an academic, government or business setting. Cross-cultural and international research experience is desirable. As an IRB member at my university, the key initial question is whether the email archive has been published (i.e., whether it is publicly available). As a general rule, content analysis of pre-existing, publicly available, materials do not require IRB review as it does not involve interaction with research subjects. If there is a question about whether the material is publicly available, you might want to go ahead and file an IRB - and the key concern will be in making sure you don't use materials in a way where "private" comments are divulged in a way that can be linked to a specific individual. I think that doing things like stripping names and other identifiers would help approvals, or stressing that you're using the text in ways that don't report specific comments, then there is less of a potential problem, and you may be able to not have to track people down for retroactive consent. Still, if you have questions about the ethics, or your institution's procedures, it's good to check with your local research compliance officer. Symposium title: Race, Ethnicity, and (New) Media April 30-May 2, 2009 The Race & Ethnic Studies Institute at Texas A&M University (http://resi.tamu.edu/ <https://libarts.tamu.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=https://libarts.tamu .edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://resi.tamu.edu/> ) convenes a symposium every other year, and the proposed theme for the 2008-2009 year is Shifting Terrains: Inequalities in the 21st Century, and the symposium itself is to focus on Race, Ethnicity, and (New) Media. The explosion of work on New Media (including the Internet, mobile devices, Web 2.0) and the juxtaposition and overlap between 'old' media (radio, television, film, and mass-print media) and New Media is a rich field of cultural production and scholarly research in which scholars of race and ethnicity have not been particularly well-represented. However, there are cutting edge scholars who do indeed explore various aspects of race/ethnicity and (New) Media (including audience/fan studies, representations of racial and ethnic identities in a variety of media, identity-focused online communities, etc.). We invite such scholars to submit papers with the intention of presenting work that deals with these topics during a 2 1/2 day interdisciplinary symposium, with several keynote speakers, including Dr. Lisa Nakamura and Dr. Henry Bial. We intend that a number of these papers will be compiled into an edited volume intended for publication, and that all papers and participants will have the opportunity to upload their papers on our developing interactive website for scholarly exchange on working papers. Submissions: 500 word abstracts or full papers of no more than 8000 words (including notes and references) should be submitted to: gatson(a)tamu.edu and resi(a)tamu.edu by December 31, 2008. Local content, interactivity, geotagging, donating, advocacy, and more

I am putting together some recommendations this week for a major national U.S. foundation and I'd like to be able to cite a few current statistics about forms on local online participation. I am interested in any baseline numbers you've discovered/know about related to various local online/participation activities, like: 1. The percentage of adult Internet users who have given their e-mail address to a neighbor, sent/received an e-mail with a neighbor 2. The percentage who have e-mailed local elected officials, signed a local online petition 3. The percentage who have joined a local online group/forum/e-list 4. The percentage of blogs that post regularly about their local community (placeblogs), percent of all "open" blogs that are political blogs and at what level of politics they focus on 5. Comparative features on local online news sites - Comparisons of reader comment policies/systems 6. Current attitudes of local elected officials about forms of online participation, e-mail, participatory democracy generally, etc. 7. Percentage of people who have either located a local charity online then volunteered, or have donated online to a local charity/cause 8. Percentage of people who receive an e-mail newsletter or updates from the local government, local media site, local religious group, other local groups Also, I am interested in reviews of current trends related to local content generation, particularly "user-generated content" of particular interest to local communities, as well as local search, the use of geotagging, and anything that seems to establish critical mass awareness/use of content and interactivity where geography is a primary determinate of relevancy. Instead of using the Internet to go to the world or simply replicate/enhance private family and personal life networks online, how are (can) people use the Internet (and related technologies) to "come home" and be part of "real" public life?
