I received IRB approval for a study involving the linguistic analysis of *private* email (which in theory should be more difficult than a listserv message). All I had to do was send a short consent-request email to those people whose messages I wanted to include in my corpus. My IRB gave me no problems with this (this is in the US). Ethics and retrospective consent

I'm in an unusual situation in that I want to analyse language from a discussion that occurred in a listserv in March this year but which is not publicly archived. As a subscriber to the listserv I saved the discussion myself because the topic was of interest to my PhD research. I have all the email addresses of the 16 people who posted on this discussion and I am making an ethics application to contact these posters for consent to linguistically analyse what they said. However I have been told by an ex-ethics committee member that I would be unlikely to get ethics approval for this because it is a retrospective discussion which is private and they would have been unaware that their comments might be part of research, and because it is not publicly archived (even though anyone can join the listserv). I thought if I at least got the posters' permission then this would be okay. I'd be interested in other peoples views. Please note I have not yet put forward the ethics application (due tuesday). I guess I can draw a comparison to this listserv- How would people feel if they were approached about their comments posted several months ago being used for research. Surely if they gave consent then that would be okay? I also might add that I consider the research a linguistic analysis rather than looking at the individuals as human participants - but thenI guess that is another can of worms! OT request: Gender Communication textbooks?

Hello everyone- Sorry about the slight OTness but I missed a book order deadline this week so I'm in a bit of a panic. I'm slated to teach Gender Communication next semester as an upper level undergraduate course, and it hasn't been taught here in so long the bookstore has no record of the last textbook used. I'd like to approach this by including some new media/online stuff since a lot has been written about gender dynamics in online spaces. At the least I want a recently updated textbook. Lisa e-journal (Maison de la recherche et des sciences de l’homme - Université de Caen – Normandy – France ) is seeking contributors to its Spring 2010 issue on media in the U.K. and the U.S. Media In Motion: Changes in Contemporary Media in English-Speaking Countries The current shifts in the media industry in the U.K. and the U.S. may be ascribed to a variety of causes – widespread Internet access, the concentration of media ownership as well as the sea-change journalistic practices are now going through. The media industry is in constant motion, and raising increasingly challenging research questions in the process. The theme of movement can be analysed from multiple theoretical and methodological perspectives, which include, but are not limited to, the areas of research suggested below: - Internet and traditional media: print media, radio and television have all turned the Internet into an integral part of their development policies. What are the consequences of the increased complexity of the media environment? - Bloggers and journalists: what is the relationship between political blogs and traditional journalism? Have new forms of writing emerged? - The construction of public opinion: the globalization of information flows has gained increased prominence. What are its causes and its consequences? Is there such a thing as globalized public opinion? Do globalized information flows strengthen hyper-local coverage or more generally media localism? What is the part played by social networks such as YouTube and Daily Motion in disseminating political information? Proposals (200 - 300 words in English or in French) are invited covering either a single English-speaking country, or using a comparative approach.
