Re: [Air-L] Ethics and retrospective consent
by Kris M. Markman 22 Oct '08

I received IRB approval for a study involving the linguistic analysis of *private* email (which in theory should be more difficult than a listserv message). All I had to do was send a short consent-request email to those people whose messages I wanted to include in my corpus. My IRB gave me no problems with this (this is in the US). If you would like to email me off list I'd be happy to share with you the language I used in my IRB application. Sincerely, Kris Markman ---------- ---------- ---------- Kris M. Ethics and retrospective consent
by Philippa Smith 22 Oct '08

22 Oct '08

I'm in an unusual situation in that I want to analyse language from a discussion that occurred in a listserv in March this year but which is not publicly archived. As a subscriber to the listserv I saved the discussion myself because the topic was of interest to my PhD research. I have all the email addresses of the 16 people who posted on this discussion and I am making an ethics application to contact these posters for consent to linguistically analyse what they said. However I have been told by an ex-ethics committee member that I would be unlikely to get ethics approval for this because it is a retrospective discussion which is private and they would have been unaware that their comments might be part of research, and because it is not publicly archived (even though anyone can join the listserv). I thought if I at least got the posters' permission then this would be okay. I'd be interested in other peoples views. Please note I have not yet put forward the ethics application (due tuesday). I guess I can draw a comparison to this listserv- How would people feel if they were approached about their comments posted several months ago being used for research. Surely if they gave consent then that would be okay? I also might add that I consider the research a linguistic analysis rather than looking at the individuals as human participants - but thenI guess that is another can of worms! Many thanks in advance for your comments. Philippa Smith PhD Candidate Institute of Culture, Discourse & Communication Auckland University of Technology Auckland NEW ZEALAND

OT request: Gender Communication textbooks?
by Tuszynski, Stephanie 22 Oct '08

22 Oct '08

Hello everyone- Sorry about the slight OTness but I missed a book order deadline this week so I'm in a bit of a panic. I'm slated to teach Gender Communication next semester as an upper level undergraduate course, and it hasn't been taught here in so long the bookstore has no record of the last textbook used. I'd like to approach this by including some new media/online stuff since a lot has been written about gender dynamics in online spaces. At the least I want a recently updated textbook. If anyone has recommendations for textbooks or supplemental books I'd appreciate it. Copies of syllabi would also be welcome. stuszyns(a)bethanywv.edu Cheers. CFP Media in Motion
by Viviane Serfaty 22 Oct '08

22 Oct '08

Lisa e-journal (Maison de la recherche et des sciences de l’homme - Université de Caen – Normandy – France ) is seeking contributors to its Spring 2010 issue on media in the U.K. and the U.S. Media In Motion: Changes in Contemporary Media in English-Speaking Countries The current shifts in the media industry in the U.K. and the U.S. may be ascribed to a variety of causes – widespread Internet access, the concentration of media ownership as well as the sea-change journalistic practices are now going through. The media industry is in constant motion, and raising increasingly challenging research questions in the process. The theme of movement can be analysed from multiple theoretical and methodological perspectives, which include, but are not limited to, the areas of research suggested below: - Internet and traditional media: print media, radio and television have all turned the Internet into an integral part of their development policies. What are the consequences of the increased complexity of the media environment? - Bloggers and journalists: what is the relationship between political blogs and traditional journalism? Have new forms of writing emerged? - The construction of public opinion: the globalization of information flows has gained increased prominence. What are its causes and its consequences? Is there such a thing as globalized public opinion? Do globalized information flows strengthen hyper-local coverage or more generally media localism? What is the part played by social networks such as YouTube and Daily Motion in disseminating political information? Proposals (200 - 300 words in English or in French) are invited covering either a single English-speaking country, or using a comparative approach. Please send them to viviane.serfaty(a)univ-paris-est.fr before 15th January 2009, along with a short bio and list of publications. Completed articles will be due by September 15th, 2009. Authors are kindly requested to comply with the submission guidelines on the journal’s site. Please feel free to contact Viviane Serfaty for any additional information. Viviane Serfaty

by martin dodge 22 Oct '08

22 Oct '08

Hello, A bit of a shameless plug but to let people know that the full content of the Atlas of Cyberspace, a book I co-wrote in 2001, is now available for free. You can download it as a pdf from, http://www.atlasofcyberspace.com/ While some of the content is out of date, I hope that it will provide an interesting and informative historical record of how the Internet was mapped and visualised in the mid to late 1990s. Feedback and comments are most welcome. cheers martin ---- Martin Dodge Geography School of Environment and Development, The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL, United Kingdom.

Fwd: <nettime> Who is The World For
by KMV 22 Oct '08

22 Oct '08

Here is an interesting development; if it becomes well publicized and world opinion is made known in advance of the election, I'll be curious to see what kind of reaction the candidates or voters make. Cheers, Kim ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dan Sheetz <dan(a)goodfoodpro.com> Date: Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 4:21 PM Subject: <nettime> Who is The World For To: nettime-l(a)kein.org Dear Nettimers, One of the most important elections in United States history will take place this November 4, 2008. While only US citizens may vote in this election, much of the world is watching the race very closely. Faced with a growing financial crisis, climate change and global energy challenges, we all know that an uncertain future will be greatly defined by the next US president. For better or worse, we are all interconnected. With this in mind, we have created TheWorldFor.com, an interactive web site where people all over the world can cast a vote for the next United States President. We invite all citizens of the world to participate: http://www.theworldfor.com We ask that you please share this site with ALL of your friends and family around the world. In the coming weeks, the site will feature an increasingly diverse and living visualization of world opinion, ultimately aimed to inform US voters as they make their way to the ballot box on November 4. TheWorldFor.com was developed by a few concerned and hardworking Americans who made this project as a labor of love. We are not affiliated with any group, campaign, or government agency. Thank you for your attention, your voice, and most importantly, your vote.
