Hi Holly: The University of the Arts is a private university in Philadephia with about 2300 students. Its College of Media and Communication offers several courses that focus on internet & society in a few different contexts. The courses below will all have an arts/humanities approach to communications: CMMC 151 - History of Communication CMMC 207 - Digital Distribution CMMC 334 - News and Culture in the Digital Age MMDI 150 - Information Concepts You can view descriptions for these courses by searching http://catalog.uarts.edu/search_advanced.php For info on the CMMC courses, contact Sigmund Washington in the Communications Department at swashington(a)uarts.edu. For info on the MMDI course, contact Angela Dowdy in the Multimedia Department at adowdy(a)uarts.edu and/or Jeremy Beaudry (who is teaching it this semester) at jbeaudry(a)uarts.edu. You may mention my name if you contact any of them. Hope this is helpful! Can someone point me to a good open source reference citation program that works?
by Olaniran, B 27 Oct '08

Can someone point me to a good open source reference citation and formatting program that works and is easy to use? I write a lot but I find myself cut in the web of digging through several manuscripts to locate sources and then having to having to cut and paste which is inefficient. My primary concern is for APA style but I will not mind one that can do APA and Chicago or MLA or their combo. Thanks in advance Oh by the way I'm using MS word 2003. Bolanle

different strokes for different disciplines
by Barry Wellman 27 Oct '08

Different disciplines have different rules re Citation forms. Sociology (and me) prefer full first names -- we are people after all. Psych (and those like Comm who follow APA) use initials. This always seemed antiseptic. I use Endnote as my reference manager. It will output just about any reference format you want, as long as you input the full first name when you input the record. Other ref. managers do the same thing, I am pretty sure. So you can, and I do, go back-forth between constricted APA format and full frontal ASA format. Barry Wellman, aka B. Citation praxis
by richard.ling＠telenor.com 27 Oct '08

Hello all, I need advice on the style of citations. I generally use only initials for first names in the name of gender equality. The idea being that the reader will judge the citation not by the gender of the author but by the quality of the work. I have recently been asked to change this format to include full given names. In addition to being a pain to look up all the names it seems to violate the gender equality idea. Is there a clear praxis here? Rich Ling ________________________________________

A number of people told me how much they enjoyed Stephen Graham's keynote address so I thought others might be interested in a special issue of Information, Communication & Society edited by Nick Ellison, Roger Burrows and Simon Parker in which Stephen has a piece on 'Sentient Cities'. The issue has been very well received and can be found in Volume 10, No 6 (2007). www.informaworld.com/ics Brian D. I recommend you to use the free download version of UCInet (http://www.analytictech.com/downloaduc6.htm) UCInet is easy to use and the functions are kind of intuitive if you have some network analysis background. To easily get a drawing, follow the menu Data>Import from spreadsheet>DL to upload your data, and then open your file with Visualize>Netdraw. you can also try Pajek (http://vlado.fmf.uni-lj.si/pub/networks/pajek/) which is also free both programs come with very useful and easy to follow instructions, Mariana ------ ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Fri, 24 Oct 2008 19:16:05 -0400 From: Peter Timusk <ptimusk(a)sympatico.ca> Subject: Re: [Air-L] simple network analysis tool To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Message-ID: <BLU0-SMTP2768FF3EA393BA228036B9DC2B0(a)phx.gbl> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed There is a plug in that works with Excel 2007 from the Microsoft Open Source Port 25 lab called Netmap download it from codeplex On 24-Oct-08, at 6:32 PM, Paul Emerson Teusner wrote: > Hi everyone, > > > > I have a small request for info. Personality & YouTube Survey
by Dominic Yeo 25 Oct '08

25 Oct '08

Dear everyone, I'm currently doing a study on the role of personality in the use of YouTube. The survey does not ask for any personally identifiable information and has been approved by the social and developmental psychology ethics committee at Cambridge University. It takes 10-15 minutes to complete. The only requirement is participants must have used YouTube in some form or another. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in taking some time in participating and publicizing the survey. http://camsocialscience.qualtrics.com//SE/?SID=SV_54GsO0wJ5NZxZOc&SVID=Prod Thanks! simple network analysis tool
by Paul Emerson Teusner 24 Oct '08

Hi everyone, I have a small request for info. I've been looking at network analysis tools currently available online/for download and have found all of them rather cumbersome and far more sophisticated than myself. Rather than endeavouring to upgrade my brain to use them, I'm wondering if anybody knows a simple program that can turn simple data on a spreadsheet into a little diagram. I have a sample of only thirty to thirty-five bloggers, and want to show connections between the sites through links and comments. I have all the data on spreadsheet, and just want to show it pictorially. Any ideas? paul emerson teusner fishers, surfers and casters - <http://teusner.org/> http://teusner.org/ bio - <http://paulteusner.org/> http://paulteusner.org/
