VLT 66 CFP “New Media in the Majority World” New media technologies are rapidly transforming cultures and media products throughout the “majority world”. This term, advocated by Bangladeshi photographer Shahidul Alam, describes “developing” countries in a way that underscores a central paradox; while decision-making power largely falls to “Group of Eight” countries, those outside this power structure comprise the bulk of the world’s population. Nations, regions and communities in the majority world, including India, China, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa all engage with locally-specific, yet globally-inflected forms of production, exhibition, distribution, and reception that chart new courses for new media technologies and suggest the possible rise of “majority media.” This issue of The Velvet Light Trap will examine the majority world in light of changes brought about by digital communications technologies, including digital production software, Internet media, DVD, digital video, satellite television, and mobile phones. Majority world cultures are being reshaped through new opportunities for media production, distribution and consumption. Examples include: the creation of a new Arab public sphere through web-based media, SMS-centered activism in Uganda, the use of digital video in Iranian cinema, the Nigerian trade in Bollywood videos, the global circulation of the telenovela bolstered by satellite television, and the use of cell phone footage in Middle Eastern documentary. This issue will privilege studies that investigate, through primary research and concrete analysis, how the production, content, and reception of non-Western film, television, and digital media have been affected by the rise of new media technologies. While this issue focuses on the changes brought about by global interactions and new technologies, essays that argue for continuities from older media and contexts in the face of such changes are also welcome. Ultimately, this issue will prioritize those submissions that attempt to sketch out the industrial and cultural forces behind these mediascapes despite their at times radically politicized contexts. Beyond the subjects suggested above, possible topics addressing new media in the majority world (especially in the Middle East, India, China, Africa and Latin America) include, but are not limited to: -how institutional contexts (i.e. ones influenced by particular legislation, policies, or flows of capital) have facilitated the use of new media -locally based reception studies that investigate how the majority world interacts with new media -aesthetic choices confronting majority world filmmakers using digital technology -the role of new media in shaping or re-invigorating locally specific narrative content -how new media is affecting media distribution and/or marketing in the majority world -locally based studies of the economics of new media in the majority world -locally based studies of majority world news media -how new media technologies are being integrated into established production practices and/or how they are paving the way for new ones -the role of new media practices in globalizing local media forms and production Papers should be between 6,000 and 7,500 words (approximately 20-25 pages double-spaced), in MLA style with a cover page including the writer’s name and contact information. Thanks for all the tips, everyone! I'll definitely look into the things mentioned. Jennifer Stromer, your tool sounds like it might be suited for my data -- Herring's work has been useful to my own -- so I will be in touch. Regarding Atlas.TI, it is also what I've been using to code my data, in part because their student price for the software is $100, which is lovely of them (and probably a good marketing strategy-- "the first one is [almost] free!"). I like Atlas ok as qualitative coding software. I couldn't figure out its autocoding feature, which would have been useful for coding blog comments as they have a standard shape. Though Atlas's boolean and grep searching techniques are counterintuitive and involve a steep learning curve, those have proved pretty useful. I am generally exporting data from Atlas.TI into ManyEyes ( http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/ ) for my visualizations at the moment. Visualization-wise, Atlas.TI promises but does not deliver. As far as I can tell, the only visualizations you can do with it at the moment are network visualizations of the categories/codes you've developed yourself! The software does not seem to provide any tools for visualizing data. It's pretty puzzling why they've made it that way. Over the last decade, it has moved from a software development approach involving mostly volunteers to a more complex ecology where firms, nonprofit organizations, government agencies and volunteers may be involved. Moreover, the production paradigm continues to expand to other areas of digital content (e.g., Creative Commons, Wikipedia, Connexions, etc.). In this conference we use the phrase “open source” to capture this broader phenomenon. The Program Committee encourages disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of open source, broadly defined. "Politics" in the conference title, can have many interpretations. Political issues closely tied to the free and open source software movement(s) include: national government policies related to the adoption of open source technologies or questions related to interoperability and open standards, software patents, vendor lock-in, and copyright. These are central themes we expect may be discussed in this forum. In this context, we welcome international submissions since differences in the political perspective appear in international contexts. However, topics related to how the concept of openness has led to various interpretations, adaptations, and applications of “open source” in other domains, and political issues that surround these broader innovations, are also welcome. Call for Papers From Social Butterfly to Urban Citizen - A HCSNet Workshop on Social and Mobile Technology to Support Civic Engagement Queensland University of Technology, Kelvin Grove Campus, Brisbane, Australia June 19th, 2009 Workshop position papers due June 26th, 2009 Author notifications sent July 13th/14th, 2009 Workshop http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/node/2943 This workshop brings together people from a diverse range of disciplines to discuss social and mobile technologies and how they can be studied, designed and developed further to support local participation and civic engagement in urban environments. Web applications such as blogs, wikis, video and photo sharing sites, and social networking systems have been termed ‘Web 2.0’ to highlight an arguably more open, collaborative, personalisable, and therefore more participatory internet experience than what had previously been possible. Giving rise to a culture of participation, an increasing number of these social applications are now available on mobile phones where they take advantage of device-specific features such as sensors, location and context awareness. This workshop will make a contribution towards exploring and better understanding the opportunities and challenges provided by tools, interfaces, methods and practices of social and mobile technology that enable participation and engagement. It will bring together a group of academics and practitioners from a diverse range of disciplines such as computing and engineering, social sciences, digital media and human-computer interaction to critically examine a range of applications of social and mobile technology, such as social networking, mobile interaction, wikis (eg., futuremelbourne.com.au), twitter, blogging, virtual worlds (eg, hub2.org) and their impact to foster community activism, civic engagement and cultural citizenship. Audience We hope to attract a multidisciplinary range of HCSnet members and colleagues working in areas such as user experience design, human- computer interaction, digital media, social sciences and computing and engineering. The topic and themes to be explored are timely, relevant and significant to the research work of many academics in Australia and overseas who are looking at ways to help engender a culture of local and national participation and engagement. Many colleagues find that the underlying systems architecture and principles that have given rise to participatory culture in many social and lifestyle domains should be examined with a view to reappropriate them to foster civic engagement and a revival of citizenship. Event Format The workshop will be held over two days, on Mon 13th and Tue 14th July 2009, at the Creative Industries Precinct of Queensland University of Technology, Kelvin Grove, Brisbane. Participants will be given the opportunity to present their work with a view to stimulate an informed debate. The workshop will allow plenty of time for both breakout and plenary discussions. Visualization tool for conversations?

Hi everyone, My dissertation involves conversational analysis of the comment threads on blogs. I want to be able to visualize which commenters are responding to other commenters. Does anyone have suggestions of software to use? Ideally I'd like to find something where I can create visualizations as I code, dragging lines between one comment and another. (I realize the latter request is probably a pipe dream.) I've already talked to Warren Sack at UCSC about the tool he used for his dissertation, and at the moment it does not look as if it will work for me, for two reasons: 1) I need to better visualize the connection between threads in chronological order, and 2) it would take a lot of work (for him!) to massage my data into a format which his software could crunch. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
