Colleagues/ Semantic publishing: the coming revolution in scientific journal publishing / Shotton, David / Learned Publishing, Volume 22, Number 2, April 2009 , pp. 85-94(10) / Publisher: Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers Abstract Recent developments in Web technology can be used for semantic enhancement of scholarly journal articles, by aiding publication of data and metadata and providing 'lively' interactive access to content. Such semantic enhancements are already being undertaken by leading STM publishers, and automated text processing will help these enhancements become affordable and routine. Publisher, editor, and author all have primary roles in that process; an incremental approach is needed. Publication of data and metadata to the Web make possible added-value 'ecosystem services'; semantic publishing will bring substantial benefits to scholarly communication. Using the term weblog/blog

I've received a message that my article about blogging and eating disorders will be published in a Scandinavian journal. At the same time I received a message from the journal's language expert about my use of the term weblog. They are questioning the use and asks why I don't use the term blog. For some reason I have imagined that the term weblog is being used more often in research. Now I'm not so sure about it. What is your impression? Does it matter if I use the term weblog or blog? OECD White Paper: _We Need Publishing Standards for Datasets and Data Tables_

Colleagues/ A Cosmic Coincidence ... /Gerry OECD has released a white paper, We Need Publishing Standards for Datasets and Data Tables, which examines the problems with current data discoverability and citations and the remedy in creating industry standards for bibliographic dataset metadata and linking. Written by Toby Green, Head of Publishing at OECD and an expert in data publishing, the paper details the problems with user ability to locate and reference online data. Datasets are a significant part of the scholarly record and being published much more frequently but with widely inconsistent metadata, links and citations. The paper proposes bibliographic metadata standards that could be implemented to provide users and librarians with data that is as accessible and as easy to find and catalogue as written works like journal articles and book chapters. By following existing scholarly metadata standards, datasets can easily utilise the existing discovery channels that are used by e-journals and e-books, including library systems, cross reference linking, publishing platforms, and search engines. The paper provides straightforward standards that 'publishers, librarians and data providers can implement to improve the accessibility and usage of important datasets, both the data that underlies scholarly works and data in that is published in its own right. Colleagues/ David Shotton, Katie Portwin, Graham Klyne, Alistair Miles / Image Bioinformatics Research Group, Department of Zoology, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom / Have Written About A Most Intriguing Initiative In The Latest Issue Of _PLoS Computational Biology_ "Adventures in Semantic Publishing: Exemplar Semantic Enhancements of a Research Article " "Scientific innovation depends on finding, integrating, and re-using the products of previous research. Here we explore how recent developments in Web technology, particularly those related to the publication of data and metadata, might assist that process by providing semantic enhancements to journal articles within the mainstream process of scholarly journal publishing. We exemplify this by describing semantic enhancements we have made to a recent biomedical research article taken from PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, providing enrichment to its content and increased access to datasets within it. These semantic enhancements include provision of live DOIs and hyperlinks; semantic markup of textual terms, with links to relevant third-party information resources; interactive figures; a re-orderable reference list; a document summary containing a study summary, a tag cloud, and a citation analysis; and two novel types of semantic enrichment: the first, a Supporting Claims Tooltip to permit "Citations in Context", and the second, Tag Trees that bring together semantically related terms. In addition, we have published downloadable spreadsheets containing data from within tables and figures, have enriched these with provenance information, and have demonstrated various types of data fusion (mashups) with results from other research articles and with Google Maps. We have also published machine-readable RDF metadata both about the article and about the references it cites, ... . We hope the showcase of examples and ideas it contains, described in this paper, will excite the imaginations of researchers and publishers, stimulating them to explore the possibilities of semantic publishing for their own research articles, and thereby break down present barriers to the discovery and re-use of information within traditional modes of scholarly communication." Hi all, recently, an article about "the biological implications of social networking" published in The Biologist by Aric Sigman (Fellow of the English Royal Society for Medicine) has been causing quite a stir. According to the author, intensive use of electronic media is linked to increased morbidity/mortality for cancer. I had already addressed that in post on my blog. Today it is a pleasure to announce that, based on questionable data and on problematic assumptions, I have come out with a seemingly preposterous claim: actually Internet cures cancer! Danielle Nicole DeVoss, Martine Courant Rife, Steve Westbrook, and John Logie *************************************************** CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS special issue of Computers and Composition, volume 27 issue 3, September 2010 Copyright, Culture, Creativity, and the Commons In 1998, Computers and Composition and Kairos both published special issues related to intellectual property. Much has changed in the 11 years since those special issues, including new legislation, proposed legislation, and the rise and fall of file-sharing spaces like Napster and Kazaa. Further, issues not addressed in the earlier special issue require the attention of computers and writing scholars, including global and international issues related to intellectual property, feminist and ecofeminist research in intellectual property, and issues of cultural cannibalism and intellectual commons. This special issue will attend to these—and other—issues, with a particular focus on the cultural consequences of our expanded sense of what counts as “property” in digital spaces. Questions we invite authors to consider and respond to include, but are not limited to: * Where are the significant intersections between intellectual property and computers and composition? What intersections have thus far remained invisible or buried? * What significant changes have occurred in U.S. copyright law in the past 15 years? In international copyright law, policies, and approaches? * What global, international, or cross-cultural intellectual property issues should we be attentive to? * How might our understandings of “the commons,” the concept of shared or “community-owned knowledge,” and the notion of “cultural appropriation” contribute to conversations on copyright and/or intellectual property? * What are some of the ways in which feminist/ecofeminist scholarship in intellectual property, and understandings of sustainability can inform or extend our approaches to intellectual property? * What are some of the ways in which cultural rhetorics scholarship in intellectual property can inform or extend our approaches to intellectual property? For example, is there a connection between racism and the commodification of culture via intellectual property regimes? A connection with sexism? Where are the intersections between discourses of race and/or gender and intellectual property-related discourse? * Are there better vocabularies, terms, and theories for us to drawn upon to situate and study “intellectual property?” Is it possible to recognize and/or attribute “intellectual property” in places other than formal legal regimes? * How have intellectual property issues become more immediate with regard to the continual growth of and use for digital writing spaces? New media texts? * In what ways can our long history of analyzing authorship and ownership of texts, including our discussions on issues of plagiarism and attribution, contribute to how we approach intellectual property issues? In what was does this long history perhaps submerge issues we might be discussing? * In what ways can writing instructors and researchers enter into public discussions about intellectual property?
