Call for Chapter Proposal—Submission Deadline March 1, 2010 For the Edited Collection Social Media Campaigns: Methods and Issues Edited by Jayne Witte, Gayle Pohl, Tom Hall, and Shing-Ling S. Chen, University of Northern Iowa To be published by Peter Lang Publishing OVERVIEW OF THIS EDITED COLLECTION With the emergence of social media (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.), practitioners are no longer limited to traditional means of campaign methods. Social media provide campaign practitioners new opportunities to construct a new kind of campaign that is more efficient and complex than what was previously possible using traditional approaches. With new methods of contact and dissemination, practitioners are able to construct integrated social networks and implement well-coordinated campaigns. Social networking environments thus call for a different methodological orientation on the part of the campaign practitioners. This different approach begets a myriad of methods and issues not generally addressed in existing texts, except perhaps in passing. Social Media Campaigns: Methods and Issues is a collection of essays by veteran social media campaign practitioners who provide: (1) testimonial illustrations as to how to effectively utilize various online social networking tools to implement campaigns, that is, the “dos” and “don'ts” of social media campaigns, may they be political or non-political, commercial or non-profit campaigns, and (2) discussions of critical issues encountered in social media campaigns. The former serves as a resource for teachers, students and practitioners who utilize online social networking tools for campaigning. The latter is designed to stimulate ongoing debates and creative ideas about a pioneering arena of research. In sum, the book is designed to make a distinctive contribution to the literature that addresses online research, as well as the fields of inquiry for traditional campaign methods (public relations, advertising, marketing, communication, journalism, sociology, psychology, education, medicine as well as related disciplines). The book is designed to be a required textbook for campaign methods classes, as well as a resource for practitioners, as it deals with methodological considerations in developing social media campaign. PROPOSAL SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Prospective authors are invited to submit chapter proposal of 200 – 500 words on or before March 1, 2010. In the proposal, please clearly specify: (1) the purpose and content of the proposed chapter, and (2) how the proposed chapter relates to the overall objectives of the book. VIDEO & STS: METHODOLOGIES AND METHODS http://events.unitn.it/sites/events.unitn.it/files/EASST_010_Track_10.pdf Despite the rapid technical developments and a general turn to the visual in the social sciences, video methodologies and methods are still not widely adopted for science and technologies studies (STS). Most researchers continue to rely on ‘traditional’ ethnographic or other qualitative research methods using other means, such as talk or writing. However, as the recent variety of video-based studies have shown, video technologies clearly offer exciting possibilities of capturing the dynamics and complexities in the field. As Macbeth (1990, p. 191) put it: “As a matter of faithfulness to the texture, temporal shape and material detail of the scenes they record, the video of filmic record provides remarkably uninterpreted renderings of the field.”1 But the reality of current STS seems to suggest otherwise. Why are video methodologies and methods not [yet] widely adopted in STS? This panel will contribute to the conference theme of “methodological approaches for investigating scientific and technological practices”. It is devised to explore to what extent video methodologies and methods can help capture and examine the socio-material practice and performance which are so central to the recent pragmatic and practice-based turn in STS since late 70s. We are especially interested in answering the following questions: * How are video methodologies and methods applied in different types of STS research? * What are the challenges of applying video-based methods in STS-like research (e.g., nuisances of using video technologies, field workers’ informed consent, interaction with the field workers, ethics of publishing video data)? * What are the solutions to socio-ethical issues in the employment of video methods? * What are the implications of video-based methods to STS research? * Is it possible to capture ‘where the action is’ on video, or is scientific and technological work too distributed, both spatially and temporally, to allow such capture? Focusing on questions involving cinema and popular media, *Kinephanos* encourages interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The journal’s primary interests are movies and popular TV series, video games, emerging technologies and fan cultures. The preferred approaches include cinema studies, communication theories, religion sciences, philosophy, cultural studies and media studies. Theme *Kinephanos*' second issue aims to explore cultural legitimation. One of the discourses in our late modernity era seeks to valorize many movements and phenomena dubbed “popular.” According to Pierre Bourdieu, cultural legitimization is a movement toward making one field autonomous, whether be its audience, or its economic foundations. However, this accreditation operates according to many strategies, oftentimes unique, oftentimes shared, but always drawing on wider social issues. One can think of remediation, as explained by Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin: whether be it cinema as “filmed theater,” comic books as “graphic novels,” or video games as “interactive movies,” the same relationship of “homage and rivalry” is at stake with the prior, already established media and arts. We wish to publish articles presenting those moments where popular culture is valorized, while addressing the characteristic issues of this phenomenon, such as the question of aesthetics or the question of power relations. The heated debates over its accuracy, anonymity, trust, vandalism and expertise only seem to fuel further growth of Wikipedia and its user base. Apart from leaving its modern counterparts Britannica and Encarta in the dust, such scale and breadth places Wikipedia on par with such historical milestones as Pliny the Elder's Naturalis Historia, the Ming Dynasty's Wen-hsien ta- ch' eng, and the key work of French Enlightenment, the Encyclopédie. The multilingual Wikipedia as digital collaborative and fluid knowledge production platform might be said to be the most visible and successful example of the migration of FLOSS (Free/Libre/Open Source Software) principles into mainstream culture. However, such celebration should contain critical insights, informed by the changing realities of the Internet at large and the Wikipedia project in particular. The CPOV Research Initiative was founded from the urge to stimulate critical Wikipedia research: quantitative and qualitative research that could benefit both the wide user-base and the active Wikipedia community itself. On top of this, Wikipedia offers critical insights into the contemporary status of knowledge, its organizing principles, function, and impact; its production styles, mechanisms for conflict resolution and power (re-)constitution. The overarching research agenda is at once a philosophical, epistemological and theoretical investigation of knowledge artifacts, cultural production and social relations, and an empirical investigation of the specific phenomenon of the Wikipedia.
