National Institute For Technology In Liberal Education For faculty, instructional technologists, and others interested in using smartphones for student projects including digital storytelling, mapping, polling, and in-field data collection. Delivered Online In Our Virtual Auditorium Program Description Mobile phones present a familiar challenge as an instructional technology: Since everyone has them, there must be a way to use them for teaching and learning. Seton Hall University has been exploring possible uses through its mobile initiative. In this session Michael Taylor, Assistant Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Mobile Research and Social Change at Seton Hall University, will discuss the uses of smartphones in the classroom across multiple disciplines. Taylor will present the use of mobile devices in student projects including digital storytelling, mapping, polling, and in-field data collection. These projects highlight the functionality of smartphones to improve classroom communication, collaboration, and connectivity. Discussion will also cover the diverse pedagogical goals that were addressed in these mobile projects, as well as some of the challenges encountered in piloting these mobile projects. The “Special Topics in Digital Teaching” series offers a sequence of interactive discussions showcasing how faculty are using digital technology for teaching and learning. The series is delivered online via NITLE’s multipoint interactive videoconferencing environment and is designed to help faculty make the transition from learning a new technology to using it effectively for teaching and learning. Hello: I am wondering whether someone can help me brainstorm how to do some twitter research. I am following a set group of 20 or so people on a list, and I'd like to collect their tweets each day and save them for future research/qualitative analysis. What's the best way to do this? Some people tweet regularly throughout the day, so it may not be as simple as a screenshot. Is there a bot that someone has for this? I am just using the main twitter site, so if someone has a different twitter ap to recommend which would make this easier, I'd appreciate it. Many thanks. Back in the dark ages (okay, 1999), I was analyzing content of some message board posts for a project and scholars were just raising the ethical question about whether consent was required in online research since, in those days, people didn't use their actual names but pseudonyms. I interacted with some people for years & years without knowing their name or what state they lived in. These days since people do use their own names, I think consent is important unless 1) the individual is a "public figure" (company spokesperson, celebrity, business) or 2) you are detaching the content from the individual user and looking at patterns and not isolating individual conduct & language. When I joined Twitter in the Spring 2008, I faced a small backlash during the summer when some folks found out that I was an ethnographer/sociologist and they assumed I was monitoring their conduct & words. It took months before I assuaged some of them that I wouldn't appropriate their Tweets, that I was a participant on the network like anyone else. I do study Twitter but I've limited myself to the top users (50K+ Followers) and study growth in account numbers, not in the content of the messages per se. Liz Pullen nwjerseyliz(a)yahoo.com

Dear all, I am doing my research in the field of political studies. My first project was the analysis of language in a BBC forum using concordance and statistical programs. Having done that, I am now starting a new project which is going to be bigger and which is to result in a PhD thesis. As I still want to be in this field, I am thinking about analyzing political web sites, i.e. it can be official sites of presidents, political parties, etc. It would be interesting to see how these sites are constructed, what language is used there, and how the "ideology" of a party/politician is transmitted through these sites. I am not sure if I have been clear about my idea, but I would love to get your feedback and/or experience in doing similar research. Also, if you think that this idea isn´t worth working, tell me that! I am more than open for any kind of public opinion at this period of my research life!
