National Institute For Technology In Liberal Education For faculty, instructional technologists, and others interested in using smartphones for student projects including digital storytelling, mapping, polling, and in-field data collection. Delivered Online In Our Virtual Auditorium Program Description Mobile phones present a familiar challenge as an instructional technology: Since everyone has them, there must be a way to use them for teaching and learning. Seton Hall University has been exploring possible uses through its mobile initiative. In this session Michael Taylor, Assistant Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Mobile Research and Social Change at Seton Hall University, will discuss the uses of smartphones in the classroom across multiple disciplines. Taylor will present the use of mobile devices in student projects including digital storytelling, mapping, polling, and in-field data collection. These projects highlight the functionality of smartphones to improve classroom communication, collaboration, and connectivity. Discussion will also cover the diverse pedagogical goals that were addressed in these mobile projects, as well as some of the challenges encountered in piloting these mobile projects. The “Special Topics in Digital Teaching” series offers a sequence of interactive discussions showcasing how faculty are using digital technology for teaching and learning. The series is delivered online via NITLE’s multipoint interactive videoconferencing environment and is designed to help faculty make the transition from learning a new technology to using it effectively for teaching and learning. Participants are invited to join these lively discussions from the convenient location of their campus offices. Registration Please register by sending an e-mail to participate(a)nitle.org. > Network participant fee (early registration by February 12): $48 > Network participant fee (after February 12): $50 > Out-of-Network participant fee: $65 Questions For more information about this event or the “Special Topics in Digital Teaching” series, please contact Rebecca Davis at rdavis(a)nitle.org . twitter research
by Nikki Usher 04 Feb '10

04 Feb '10

Hello: I am wondering whether someone can help me brainstorm how to do some twitter research. I am following a set group of 20 or so people on a list, and I'd like to collect their tweets each day and save them for future research/qualitative analysis. What's the best way to do this? Some people tweet regularly throughout the day, so it may not be as simple as a screenshot. Is there a bot that someone has for this? I am just using the main twitter site, so if someone has a different twitter ap to recommend which would make this easier, I'd appreciate it. Many thanks. Hi Nikki -- I was also curious about the consent factor, as Liz suggested. A good site to check that may have such a tool in place is http://oneforty.com and feel free to tweet Laura Fitton at @pistachio if you can't find something (or to see if it exists). Related, depending how you "scrape" the content through the API, there have been cases when Twitter management has suspended accounts for suspicious activity. -Ari A R I H E R Z O G Online Media Strategist & Newburyport City Councilor read me: http://ariwriter.com | http://council.ariwriter.com contact me: 978-558-0008 | ariherzog(a)gmail.com schedule a meeting/call: http://tungle.me/ariherzog

Exchange theory sources
by Murray Turoff 04 Feb '10

04 Feb '10

quote from page 105 of the network nation 2nd revised edition (1993 mit) press but direct quote form the first edition in 1978 by addison weseley. "One thing that seems to be able to explain addiction, in theoretical terms, is exchange theory. In its simplest form, as stated by George Homans (Homans, 1958, 1961) no person will continue to engage in any behavior that is not profitable. "Profit" is defined as rewards for engaging in an interaction minus costs." "If we look at the rows referring to total items sent (further broken down by messages and comments), we see that in computerized conferencing, even the most active users "profit"; that is, they receive back considerably more items than they sent. How can this be? It is because each message can be multiply addressed, and each conference items is received by all members of the conference." (Table 3-2, page 104) data gathered by statistical monitor sample of EIES users 1976-1977 eliminating any support roles for the system operation or development. The sample was 129 users and broken down by their hours of experience with the system. The revised 1993, edition can still be bought form MIT press, it only added one new chapter of new findings and some related theories supporting the design of computer mediated communications. chapter 14: Superconnectivity: Computers, Communications, and Social Organization chapter 3 social dynamics: the impact of computer mediation chapter 11 has a chapter on economics that translates the idea here to an analytical effort model of the human time to create (type) a contribution vs. the return or payoff of the time to read a return and showing at what level of replies under different conditions is the creator payed in added words returned to him in the replies. It compares the results to verbal meetings where everyone is contributing in audio sequences and how many people it takes to make face to face meeting less effective than online discussion in conveying information. It is quite up todate in that it is based on average values for typing, reading, speaking rates. It also shows how to add costs of travel, phones, and costs of either online or face-to-face meetings based upon average salaries of participants. Re: [Air-L] twitter research
by Liz 04 Feb '10

Back in the dark ages (okay, 1999), I was analyzing content of some message board posts for a project and scholars were just raising the ethical question about whether consent was required in online research since, in those days, people didn't use their actual names but pseudonyms. I interacted with some people for years & years without knowing their name or what state they lived in. These days since people do use their own names, I think consent is important unless 1) the individual is a "public figure" (company spokesperson, celebrity, business) or 2) you are detaching the content from the individual user and looking at patterns and not isolating individual conduct & language. When I joined Twitter in the Spring 2008, I faced a small backlash during the summer when some folks found out that I was an ethnographer/sociologist and they assumed I was monitoring their conduct & words. It took months before I assuaged some of them that I wouldn't appropriate their Tweets, that I was a participant on the network like anyone else. I do study Twitter but I've limited myself to the top users (50K+ Followers) and study growth in account numbers, not in the content of the messages per se. Liz Pullen nwjerseyliz(a)yahoo.com

political web sites
by anna 04 Feb '10

04 Feb '10

Dear all, I am doing my research in the field of political studies. My first project was the analysis of language in a BBC forum using concordance and statistical programs. Having done that, I am now starting a new project which is going to be bigger and which is to result in a PhD thesis. As I still want to be in this field, I am thinking about analyzing political web sites, i.e. it can be official sites of presidents, political parties, etc. It would be interesting to see how these sites are constructed, what language is used there, and how the "ideology" of a party/politician is transmitted through these sites. I am not sure if I have been clear about my idea, but I would love to get your feedback and/or experience in doing similar research. Also, if you think that this idea isn´t worth working, tell me that! I am more than open for any kind of public opinion at this period of my research life! Thank you very much, Anna Ivanova PhD Candidate, University of Seville, Spain ivanova.re(a)gmail.com -- anna . -- Скачай новую ICQ 7.0 http://icq.rambler.ru/
