Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg has built his social networking empire on the belief that "information wants to be shared", a particular philosophy of information that directly impacts the values built into the design of Facebook, ranging from its user interface, privacy policies, terms of service, and method of governance. I am proposing a panel for IR.10 (Gothenburg, Sweden, Oct 21-23, 2010) titled "On the Philosophy of Facebook". This panel will explore the philosophy of Facebook and its broader implications for norms of privacy, identity, governance, sociability, and online life generally. Ideal papers will provide philosophical, conceptual, and/or critical insights into Facebook and social networking generally. I try to write a research propal about thai senior citizens and the internet. This research aims to study about internet using behavior of Thai senior citizens, advantage, and disadvantage in internet use and supporting ways by theirs opinion. I want to study only thai elderly who use the internet. recently statistic, has 77,869 older persons. I'm working in the area of privacy on harvesting social networking data in Canada. Does anyone know of any published research on Blippy? Or any tools that extract Blippy data the same way Twitter /Facebook data gets harvested? International M.A. in New Media & Digital Culture – University of Amsterdam Call for Applications – Fall 2010 admission deadline: 1 April 2010 Overview The International M.A. in New Media & Digital Culture (NMMA) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is accepting applications for 2010-2011 academic year. The NMMA is a one-year residence program undertaken in English at UvA in the heart of Amsterdam. Students become actively engaged in critical Internet culture, with an emphasis on new media theory and aesthetics, including theoretical materialist traditions and practical information visualization trends. Our permanent faculty are recognized experts in their fields, who are committed to their students. The program admits approximately forty to fifty students per year, classes are no larger than 20, and the faculty-to-student ratio is 1:10. Curriculum 1st Semester: students follow a course in academic blogging, led by critical Internet theorist and tactical media practitioner Geert Lovink. Their entries form the internationally noted Masters of Media site, http://mastersofmedia.hum.uva.nl/, regarded as a top blog for new media research and nominated for a Dutch award for best educational blog. The concurrent new media theories course focuses on classic texts by innovators from Alvin Turing to Tim Berners-Lee. The final first semester class, Digital Methods, given by the program Chair, Richard Rogers, trains students in novel techniques for Internet research, http://www.digitalmethods.net/. 2nd Semester: the student chooses between courses on digital aesthetics, new media politics or information visualization. The digital aesthetics course is theoretically inclined in the traditions of art history and visual culture, and the new media politics class is concerned with the transformations the Internet is bringing to politics. Information visualization is a joint theoretical-practical collaboration between designers, programmers and analysts, where the product is an online tool, digital visualization or interactive graphic. The course of study concludes with the M.A. thesis, an original analysis that makes a contribution to the field, undertaken with the close mentorship of a faculty supervisor. The graduation ceremony includes an international symposium with renowned speakers. Graduates of the NMMA have gained an analytical and practical skill-set that enables diverse careers in research and practice-related areas that make use of the Internet, including business, government, NGOs, and creative industries that are evolving with emerging new media. Our graduates include Lotte Meijer, winner of a Webby award, and Eva Kol, whose MA thesis, Hyves, was published by Kosmos in 2008 and sold over 5000 copies its first year in print. Student Life The quality-of-living in Amsterdam ranks among the highest of international capitals. Successful virtual idea teams through “Elective Leadership”- Today, innovation and ideas are generated through cross-functional teams of peers. The peers are experts in their field and they have to work together as a team, frequently even as a virtual team. Elective leadership is an approach how leadership in such a team can be implemented to increase the success of idea generation teams. Ralf Friedrich, lecturer at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences and trainer and coach for project teams, launched an experiment for Virtual Teamwork. Curious voluntary participants are welcome and can find more information here: www.gepros.com/vtr The background of the experiment: The business world is changing rapidly and with this change new ways of organising work are being established. In the area of idea generation, more work is done through virtual teams (Chudoba, Katherine ).Virtual idea generation teams are teams which cross several boundaries, such as geographic, temporal, and organizational boundaries and primarily employ telecommunication and information technologies to accomplish a common task (Müthel and Högl, 2008). More and more companies work in so-called onsite/offshore organizations where some team members are located in Europe and other team members are located in low cost countries. These virtual software development teams are tasked to develop complex software systems. The team members of these teams do not see each other and in order to master the project have to learn virtual work practices. Current virtual teamwork practices require different competencies and skills from the team members (Wong and Burton, 2000). The approach promotes a team leadership approach called “elective leadership”. Instead of management selecting a leader for such a team, the team elects a leader and, if necessary, re-elects another leader, if the leader failed in his or her leadership role. Team performance depends on the motivation, skills and competencies of its members on how to work in a virtual environment. All the above authors describe concepts where basically peer groups provide feedback to each other to increase the performance of the learning group or project team. However, the introduction of formal team leadership is not considered. In a peer group, all members are on the same hierarchical level and have the same rights and duties. Elective leadership implements a leader and leadership responsibilities. The benefits of the elective leadership model is to have a person in charge of implementing important virtual team processes. It is recommended to focus on two virtual team processes in particular: the get-to-know-each-other process and the feedback process.
