Successful virtual idea teams through “Elective Leadership”- Today, innovation and ideas are generated through cross-functional teams of peers. The peers are experts in their field and they have to work together as a team, frequently even as a virtual team. Elective leadership is an approach how leadership in such a team can be implemented to increase the success of idea generation teams. Ralf Friedrich, lecturer at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences and trainer and coach for project teams, launched an experiment for Virtual Teamwork. Curious voluntary participants are welcome and can find more information here: www.gepros.com/vtr The background of the experiment: The business world is changing rapidly and with this change new ways of organising work are being established. In the area of idea generation, more work is done through virtual teams (Chudoba, Katherine ).Virtual idea generation teams are teams which cross several boundaries, such as geographic, temporal, and organizational boundaries and primarily employ telecommunication and information technologies to accomplish a common task (Müthel and Högl, 2008). More and more companies work in so-called onsite/offshore organizations where some team members are located in Europe and other team members are located in low cost countries. These virtual software development teams are tasked to develop complex software systems. The team members of these teams do not see each other and in order to master the project have to learn virtual work practices. Current virtual teamwork practices require different competencies and skills from the team members (Wong and Burton, 2000). The approach promotes a team leadership approach called “elective leadership”. Instead of management selecting a leader for such a team, the team elects a leader and, if necessary, re-elects another leader, if the leader failed in his or her leadership role. Team performance depends on the motivation, skills and competencies of its members on how to work in a virtual environment. All the above authors describe concepts where basically peer groups provide feedback to each other to increase the performance of the learning group or project team. However, the introduction of formal team leadership is not considered. In a peer group, all members are on the same hierarchical level and have the same rights and duties. Elective leadership implements a leader and leadership responsibilities. The benefits of the elective leadership model is to have a person in charge of implementing important virtual team processes. A methodology is a collection of methods having some application or philosophical basis. qualitative methods of evaluation express a methodological approach that is contrasted often and sometimes fought over with respect to quantitative evaluation methods There are very different methodological approaches to learning for example and a lot of methods for learning under each learning methodology. there is along history of fights in Information Systems over what are the more appropriate methodologies. I think the best work on methodologies for learning in IS is C. W. Churchman's book on the "design of inquiry systems" where he classifies inquiry processes (or the design of information systems) according to the degree to which the user accepts a given philosophy of what is truth or evidence for a truth: Leibnitz, Locke, hegel, Kant, and Singer. Under each of these "methodologies" you have very different methods for designing and inquiry system using methods from various scientific areas like the physical sciences, the social sciences, the humanities, and engineering. Dealing with methogologies is a much more challanging problem than dealing with methods. It is like having to have a blueprint for building something using different tools and materials. Some of us find it easier to use the same tool for everything, my tool/method bias has always been Delphi! Some build models, do cost benefit studies, use surveys, do experiments, others do interviews, etc. the field you came from often indoctrinates you in the current acceptable set (methodology) of methods and does not always explore outside the boundary of the current paradigm. There is a picture on my website of a painting from 1572 that expresses this paradox of interdisciplinary research and studies. Co-located with Wikimania 2010 (Intl. Conference on Wikimedia Foundation projects, http://wikimania2010.wikimedia.org) Peer-reviewed and archived in the ACM Digital Library. SUMMARY WikiSym, the International Symposium on Wikis and Open Collaboration, will be held this summer in Gdansk, Poland. Starting this year, WikiSym aims to explicitly broaden its scope, exploring not only the thriving wiki community, but also other open movements and open collaboration initiatives. This includes related areas such as open online communities, collaborative creation of multimedia content (with or without wikis), and open journalism and publishing, just to list a few examples. Furthermore, our goal is to establish WikiSym as a venue for the exchange of information, experiences and practices among an interdisciplinary audience, including researchers, practitioners, industry representatives and experts with a wide variety of different backgrounds. As a result, WikiSym has established 3 complementary tracks to merge the contributions from such a diverse community: * Wiki track: Focused on research in wiki technology, wiki websites, wiki communities, and in general any kind of initiative pivoting around wiki software. * Industry track: This new track will focus on the specific needs of enterprises and private companies interested in sharing and promoting their experiences around wikis and open collaboration projects/products/initiatives. * Open collaboration track: This track is a dedicated venue for sharing research results and experiences in initiatives that may not be built specifically on wiki software, but share the "wiki way" of organization. These may include open collaborations, open communities, and open movements that allow the interchange of ideas and contributions from participants with a range of interests and motivations. Research manuscripts may be sent to any of these tracks. However, submitting the same manuscript to more than one track at the same time is not allowed. We encourage emphasizing lessons learned and providing a clear concise message to the audience about the relevance of the work. The paper must place your work in context within the field, citing related work and indicating clearly what aspects of the work are new. Research papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee to meet rigorous academic standards of publication. They should be written in English and must not exceed 10 pages (for full papers) or 4 pages (for short papers). Papers will be reviewed both with respect to conceptual quality and clarity of presentation. Authors of accepted papers are expected to attend the conference in order to present the paper. Accepted submissions will be published in the WikiSym proceedings and archived in the ACM Digital Library. Students who are at least one year away from dissertation completion are invited to submit to the Doctoral Symposium. Students beginning their research are especially invited to attend. To submit a proposal send a 2-3 page description of your dissertation research, including: * A description of your work * The goals---what contributions will your research generate? * The approach---what is being performed to achieve the goals? How will results be validated? Additionally, your adviser must send a brief statement of your dissertation progress to date and a statement of recommendation to the Doctoral Symposium chair. WORKSHOPS Workshops provide an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to discuss and learn about topics that require extended engagement such as new systems, research methods, standards and formats. A workshop should require participants to engage with each other for at least half a day. For shorter sessions, please consider WikiSym's open space format. A workshop proposal should consist of approximately two pages describing what you intend to do and how your session will meet the criteria described above. It should include a concise abstract, proposed time frame (half-day, full-day) and one-paragraph biographies of all people relevant to the submission. Workshop proposals will be reviewed and selected for their interest to the community. Each workshop will be allocated a half-day or a full-day and a room. PANELS Panels provide an interactive forum for bringing together people with interesting points of view to discuss compelling wiki issues. Panels involve participation from both the panelists and audience members in a lively discussion. Proposals for panels should consist of approximately two pages describing what you intend to do and how your session will meet the criteria described above. It should include a concise abstract and one-paragraph biographies of all panelists. A panel submission will be reviewed and selected for their interest to the community. Each panel will be given a 90-minute time slot. POSTERS Poster presentations enable researchers to present late-breaking results, significant work in progress, or work that is best communicated in conversation. WikiSym's lively poster sessions let conference attendees exchange ideas one-on-one with authors, and let authors discuss their work in detail with those attendees most deeply interested in the topic. Poster proposals may describe original research, engineering, or experience reports. Submissions should consist of a two-page extended abstract outlining the content of the poster. Successful applicants will be invited to display a poster, 1x2m in size, at a special plenary session of the Symposium. DEMONSTRATIONS Wikis are intended to be used, and no format is better suited for demonstrating the utility of new wiki research and technology than showing and using it. If you would like to demonstrate new features or products, this is the place! Demonstrations give presenters an opportunity to show running systems and gather feedback. Demo submissions will be reviewed based on their relevance to the community. A submission should be one page in length, with a title and a short description of the demo. The programme allows students from different disciplinary backgrounds to develop skills in understanding digital media and technology in the context of a research-led department. Programme aims This MA offers an innovative interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to contemporary technology and new media, drawing upon expertise in Digital Media, Politics and International Relations, Cultural Studies, Media Studies, Journalism, and Film Studies. The MA examines some of the key issues confronting twenty-first century global societies through a dynamic programme that combines theoretical and applied perspectives, and is taught by a team of leading academics in the field. I'm with Marj Kibby, but I've almost given up fighting against the misuse of "Methodology" for "Method" Most of use 1 or more Methods Only a few of us study the development or evaluation of better Methods: Methodology. Methodology is pretentious. But so many people have used it to mean Method(s), that it's become widely and unconsciously imitated. Let us henceforth use our Methods with cheer, pride and self-awareness. And my hat's off to those intrepid few Methodologists who study, evaluate and develop new Methods. At my work place, Statistics Canada, we have people called methodologists who are the Gods. They have degrees in statistics typically PhDs in statistics. I have a bachelors in statistics so I am an applied statistician or statistical projects manager. I believe methodology is the study of methods. At my work that means things like correctly designing a SAS program that can compute a Coefficient of Variance for a given estimate based on survey data. Of course the design of sample and survey are all up to methodologists. We also employ a variety of sociologists, economists, geographers really all kinds of social scientists who use statistics to produce research papers and typically manage a single survey which they then write about.
