Visions of the Gamepocalypse (Jesse Schell SALT talk)

*Jesse Schell (Author of The art of game design http://artofgamedesign.com/) gave a talk as part of their seminars about long term thinking (SALT) http://www.longnow.org/seminars/ . Stewart brand wrote the transcript. It turns out that our future is constant play, and we may well be passing our WOW avatars on to our children and grandchildren. How’s that for a heirloom? * *-----------------------------* In a glee-filled evening, Schell declared that games and real life are reaching out to each other with such force that we might come to a condition of "gamepocalypse---where every second of your life you're playing a game in some way. He expects smart toothbrushes and buses that give us good-behavior points, and eye-tracking sensors that reward us for noticing ads, and subtle tests that confirm whether product placement in our dreams has worked. The reason games are so inviting is that they offer: clear feedback, a sense of progress, the possibility of success, mental and physical exercise, a chance to satisfy curiousity, a chance to solve problems, and a great feeling of freedom. Accelerating technology has made some people give up on predicting the future, Schell said, but in fact it should make us much better predictors, because we get so much practice in finding out so quickly whether our predictions are right or wrong. He feels confident in predicting a number of driving forces that will make games subsume all other media and occupy ever more of real life. They are: * Nooks & crannies---new niches for games in people's time, in specialty groups, in various world cultures. * Microtransactions---which will really take off when they blend with social networking. * New sensors---tilty smart phones are a glimpse of what disposable sensors everywhere might bring. * New screens---live displays on everything. * REM-tainment---lucid dreams as a play field. * AdverGaming---commercialization money drives powerful innovation. * Beauty---everything is getting goreous. * Customization---you can already get personalized M&Ms. * Eye and face tracking---universal face recognition is coming, and so is having your avatar reflect your real-face expressions. * The curious will win---games so reward curiosity and fast learning that the incurious will be left behind. * Authenticity---"real" constantly pushes toward* real*. * Social networking---Facebook! * Transmedia worlds---Pokémon showed the way, embracing a game, TV, cards, and toys. * Speech recognition---soon you will have to persuade a computer charactor to do something. * Geotracking---the real world becomes the screen. * Sharing---Wikipedia showed its power. * Quantitative design---detailed real-time analysis of what works in games drives exquisite adaptation. * Extrinsic rewards---gold stars everywhere, but Schell recommends the book*Punished by Rewards * and believes that intrinsic rewards are better to promote because they last. * Whole life tracking---the endpoint is immersion. Hopefully in what James Carse calls "the infinite game"---where the point is not in winning but in always improving the game. Asked in the Q&A about short versus long games, Schell noted that massive multiplayer games have such scale and scope and offer such endless new goals and progress along with their social intensity that World of Warcraft now has 10 million players. Schell's first talk caused a lot of noise around the game studies folks but I never really saw any of them follow up on some of the things he said (go here if you haven't seen: http://fury.com/2010/02/jesse-shells-mindblowing-talk-on-the-future-of-game… ). In particular, I was curious what people felt about the ideas that eventually formed this talk. I hope to see some more work on these ideas as they seem to be pretty interesting concerns about how the world will develop. One thing from the first post that struck me is: " We may well be passing our avatars on to our children and grandchildren." Does anyone know of any work that approaches this idea? Thanks, Nick

On a broader matter, does anyone know of a good article or two that discusses 'versions' in software from a cultural / socio-political perspective? I am still working on my historicity of Web 2.0 stuff and need something which helps me explain the semiotics of writing / reading in versions.... As I was working as local chair for the second conference, I set about designing a logo for the program and for the t-shirts that I hawked incessantly throughout the conference. In a moment of cutey-pie nerdosity, I hit upon the all-too-obvious idea of calling the conference "version 2.0" and thus we descended into the rabbit hole. Personally, I think we should have followed Apple's move, and called the 10th Conference "Internet Research X" and then all subsequent conferences would have been decimal increments within "X." RSS > TagCloud > 4 > CD : WebFeed-Based TagClouds For Collection Development > i-CD Colleagues/ I am greatly interested in learning of any/all past/present/future initiatives in which an Abstracts/Indexes search results webfeed (RSS; Atom; Etc.) is Mashed into aTagCloud that displays the frequency of terms from the citation and abstracts for the RSS results. I currently subscribe to a variety of altering services and wish to go Beyond The Linear Review of entries in order to expedite the identification of potential candidates for further consideration. My current interest is to use the mashup to visualize RSS search updates from Dissertations & Theses @ Iowa State University in order to keep abreast of the current and emerging research for departments which I have assigned responsibility to inform my Collection Development activities. Call for Papers: Video Games and Cinema

MFRU, International Festival of Computer Arts in Maribor, Slovenia invites papers on video games and cinema, to be presented at the festival's Symposium, taking place on 19. and 20. November 2010. The festival The International Festival of Computer Arts (MFRU), Maribor, Slovenia was established in 1994. At that time, it was the first of the kind in Slovenia and among the first in the region. During less that two decades, it introduced various new ideas into public knowledge, from interactive art and digital storytelling to body art and robotics. It presented groundbreaking works and ideas of artist and scholars such as Peter Weibel, Allucquére Rosanne Stone, Timothy Druckrey, Stelarc, Brian Goldfarb, Van Gogh TV and Yes Men, and made generally known work of slovene artist such as Edvard Zajec, Vuk Cosic, Igor Stromayer and Laibach. Through its various activities, from exhibitions to public performances and lectures, MFRU became the platform for presentation and exchange of innovative ideas that shaped significantly new media and computer arts theory and artistic practices in Slovenia, the region and the world. 2010 This year, the topic of MFRU is NEW PLAYSCAPES – EXPLORING HORIZONS OF IMAGINATION. The staring point is the importance of transformation for the future of the world, argued for by French philosopher Edgar Morin (Quand un système est incapable de traiter ses problèmes vitaux, il se dégrade, se désintègre ou alors il est capable de susciter un meta-système à même de traiter ses problèmes : il se métamorphose, whole article available on http://mneaquitaine.wordpress.com/2010/01/10/eloge-de-la-metamorphose-par-e…) Focus is on computer video games - on the one hand as the critique of the gambling as a guiding principle of contemporary western societies, on the other hand as one of the prime and most generaly accessible ventures of creativity and imagination. Actually, video games in many respects surpassed the movies, from new, non-linear forms of storytelling to modes of narration, complexity of imaginary spaces, techniques of visualizations and representations. Symposium - Video Games and Cinema, Re-play Within the symposium, which has traditionally been one of the pilars of the MFRU, we are going to address this topic by rethinking the changing relationship between Video Games and Cinema. We welcome contributions dealing with various aspects of visualization, narration, user experience and reception, from the perspective of the actual experience of gaming, but also from more general perspective of the virtualization of environment and the role of imagination in contemporary media-scapes.
