Patrons of subscribing libraries can now listen to hundreds of thousands of classical, jazz, world music, and other recordings from smart phones and other mobile devices. ALEXANDRIA, VA, July 15, 2010—Electronic publisher Alexander Street Press has launched mobile access to its complete line of streaming music collections—including Classical Music Library, Jazz Music Library, and Smithsonian Global Sound® for Libraries—making it possible for patrons at subscribing libraries to listen using internet-enabled smart phones and other mobile devices. Application Round Opens for Cartagena Meeting Fellowships Program ensures global representation at ICANN’s International Public Meetings 22 July 2010 MARINA DEL REY, Calif.: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has launched the 11th round of the Fellowship program applications for its 39th International Public Meeting to be held Cartagena, Columbia on 5-10 December 2010. Over the last 10 meetings, the Fellowship program has proven to be a successful method of capacity building for the ICANN community, making sure global voices are heard in the wide variety of public forums that it holds. As CEO Rod Beckstrom said when addressing the Russian Internet Governance Forum in Moscow last May, “The Internet is a work in progress. It feeds and grows off ideas, and new ideas greatly affect its direction. Its most influential contributors are those who can see the possibilities that others don’t. And the most powerful are those whose ideas trigger the imagination of others.” We see the Fellowship program playing a major role in bringing those great ideas and idea makers into the Internet community. Priority in selection is given to applicants who are current residents of developing and least developed nations and interested in participating in ICANN and its supporting organizations, such as the Governmental Advisory Committee, the Country Code Names Supporting Organization, the At-Large and the Generic Names Supporting Organization. The Fellowship program will assist in covering airfare, hotel and a stipend. Recipients will be expected to actively participate in and contribute to ICANN processes. To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. It is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet’s unique identifiers. ICANN doesn’t control content on the Internet. It cannot stop spam and it doesn’t deal with access to the Internet. I will be conducting a 5-day training course in online research methods, with particular focus on analysing social media network data. The course is part of the ACSPRI 2010 Spring Program (http://www.acspri.org.au) and runs 27 Sep to 1 Oct, hosted by Monash University, Clayton Campus (Melbourne). Here is the blurb for the course: The World Wide Web is only around 20 years old, but it has become central to our economic, political and social lives. This course will provide students with thorough training in online research methods for social science Internet research. While "obtrusive" social research methods (e.g. online surveys and focus groups) will be covered, there is greater emphasis on unobstrusive research methods, e.g. quantitative analysis of digital trace data from websites, blogsites, microblogs (Twitter) and social networking sites such as Facebook. The course has a mixture of lectures and practical sessions. Practical sessions will be focused on unobtrusive online research and will involve the use of the VOSON System (collection/analysis of hyperlink networks), VOSON-sns (collection/analysis of social network service data) and NodeXL (Microsoft Excel 2007 template for social network analysis). “Drug as Medium, Medium as Drug” call for book chapters. Seeking several additional contributors for a book contracted for publication in 2011 with Continuum Press. Considering any relevant submissions, but especially interested in proposals from individuals with experience in the medical, pharmacological or clinical fields who bring an empirical perspective to the medium-as-drug/drug-medium idea. Possible inclusion of a section on media addiction (several chapters). See title, description and TOC (to date) below: Drug as Medium, Medium as Drug: communication, consumption and consciousness (tentative title) Book Summary Humans live in both physical and symbolic spaces. This book is about how we live in media, how drugs are media, and how we “inhabit” both media and drugs as experiential systems that enable and constrain us in various ways. Description Taking seriously the idea that media are environmental and therefore structure what people can see, say and do, we should also consider the ways we “inhabit” drugs, and the extent to which various pharmaceuticals function as constitutive environments for the people who use them. Like many communication media – indeed, as mediators of experience and perception – a host of recreational, ceremonial, and medical drugs (e.g., sexual dysfunction, attention deficit, anti-depressant and anti-anxiety drugs) prompt certain ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Contributors to this volume consider how drugs function as communication technologies; literally media in and for the human sensorium. That is to say, drugs are considered communication media in a practical sense, not merely in the metaphorical way they tend to be discussed in the popular press. Offering one early take on this, Lewis Mumford, a pioneer in Media Ecology, recognized a relationship between technology, chemicals and biology. Here Mumford foreshadows developments in pharmaceutical forms of birth control that had not yet come to pass: Plainly, Marx was in error when he said that machines told more about the system of production that characterized an epoch than its utensils and utilities did: for it would be impossible to describe the neotechnic phase without taking into account various triumphs in chemistry and bacteriology in which machines played but a minor part. . . The movement of limbs is more obvious than the process of osmosis: but they are equally important in human life; and so too the relatively static operations of chemistry are as important to our technology as the more obvious engines of speed and movement. Today our industry owes a heavy debt to chemistry: tomorrow it may incur an even heavier debt to physiology and biology: already, in fact, it begins to be apparent (Mumford, 1934; p. 234). Since media ecology is generally concerned with the constitution of human consciousness, this meta-discipline should broaden its scope and consider the impact of drugs upon the development and current constitution of human consciousness. But how do various pharmaceuticals function as constitutive, experiential environments for those who use them? Extending McLuhan’s observations regarding the reflexive and constitutive functions of conventional communication media, what are some of the ways we use drugs, and by the same token, drugs use us? Contributors adopt a “field view” or system-theoretic approach to understanding our media use as a kind of drug use and drug use as form of media use. Media and drugs are thus conceived as communicative tools that enhance and/or inhibit physical, social and symbolic experience – our ways of seeing and being in the world. For example, when someone dies, the connectivities and virtual communities supported by and lived through Facebook, MySpace and the like are transformed from viscous, living portrayals of individuals in burgeoning personal social networks to digital memorials and components in more inert structures for someone who was. (Digital) photographs and video clips become a way to remember, commemorate, preserve and define various forms of digital immortality. Digital fragments such as text messages, Web pages, social networking sites, blog comments and so on populate an identity that promises to linger through these shards of ourselves as never before. However, as bodies decay and decompose after death, so do the digital fragments of the deceased slowly ossify and become fixed yet fragmentary traces of the life that once was. These digital life documents (Plummer, 1983) are then not only dependent on the producer and their immediate connections. They are also supportive of connections that remain after the producer is no longer alive as a part of larger ecologies of interests and exchanges where rules and customs are still evolving. They move from being part of the milieu of simultaneity (Jaureguiberry, 2000) to the property of history and glacial time (Urry, 2000). As people spend more time at keyboards, theres less being stored away in dusty attics for family and friends to hang on toThe pieces of our lives that we put online can feel as eternal as the Internet itself, but what happens to our virtual identity after we die?[Faure, 2009] Attention has recently turned to how social networking sites can become a form of memorial (Fletcher, 2009; Faure, 2009; Kera and Foong, 2009; van den Hooven, 2008) and how emergent technologies can define new forms of immortality and afterlife. As demonstrated by the quotation above, there is a temptation to apply what we know of the analogue world to the digital and argue, as with paper and offices (Sellen and Harper, 2002), that digital media will simply replace the physical stuff of rituals, ceremonies and ongoing remembering. These are the kinds of assumptions we wish to question and probe through this special issue. Our interests extend beyond commentary, discussion and debate around remembering and commemoration. They also extend beyond consideration of issues of access (i.e. who can get at the remains of the dead and how), representation (i.e. how the dead and their remains can be represented), control (i.e. who manages the transition from being to being remembered and how this is done) and maintenance (i.e. who is responsible for keeping the deads fragments available, accessible etc). Through examples drawn from actual cases, thorough analyses and well-argued conceptual discussions we also wish to address the practical, social, conceptual and ethical issues with: - dealing with the physical and digital remnants of the once living. - the ongoing management of the social ties between the living and the dead. - the management of the stuff (i.e. bodies, data, objects) involved in death. - the possible extension of being-in-the-world through the hybridisation of once living, sentient beings with other biological and robotic entities. - support for death cults (e.g. www.vhemt.com) and desecration through digital technologies. - the potential for immortality through digital macabre celebrations of death (e.g. www.mydeathspace.com) digital mashups of the deads digital fragments (e.g. www.dziga.com/human-victor) - new forms of grieving and commemorating via emerging technologies through, for example, the generation of digital archives for individuals and those that follow alike (e.g. www.croptrust.org) - different visions of the preservation, afterlife and immortality of self and society through the digital. - cultural issues with dying, death, afterlife and technology. We also wish to reflect on how the apparent ubiquity and uniformity of new technologies contrasts starkly with the diversity of beliefs and cultural practices with regard to dying, death and afterlife. Some of the questions we wish to address through this special issue include (but are not restricted to): - How do we appropriately design, store and archive the deads digital fragments and how can grieving, remembering and letting go be supported through them? - What are the issues around ordinary technologies transforming into memorials, evoking powerful memories, nostalgia etc? - How will this ever-increasing mass of dead data be managed and by whom? - Should freedom of choice concerning death be supported/promoted/safeguarded against through technologies such as social networking tools? - What are the legal and ethical implications of digital desecration and the hybridisation of (the remains of) the dead with the living? - What are the implications of and insights provided by the inevitable end of civilisation for the design and management of digital resources? These issues promise not only to stretch our analytical approaches and tools but also our methods, methodologies and ethical frameworks. Thus we wish to elicit submissions that address themes relevant to this call and, more generally, to The Information Society journal (http://www.indiana.edu/~tisj/) Through eliciting these responses we hope to gather together in a single volume a series of high quality, scholarly articles that are accessible to non-specialists to deepen our understanding of issues concerning technology, death and afterlife and immortality through new data, perspectives, conceptual treatments and/or analyses. SUBMISSIONS Appropriate longer submissions (up to 7,500 words) include: - Extended reports from the field; - Critical literature reviews; - Discursive pieces exploring themes; - Deployments/evaluations of relevant technologies. Shorter submissions (4,000 words) can include: - Reflections on approaches and methods; - Opinion pieces; - Early reports on studies of technologies in situ; - Design proposals addressing particular themes. Papers will be due on 8th November 2010. We will aim to return reviews with feedback on acceptance/rejection and the need for any changes four months after that. Ranking Web of Universities: July 2009 edition

The July edition of the Ranking Web of World Universities (http://www.webometrics.info) shows important news. Most of them are due to changes done to improve the academic impact of the open web contents and to reduce the geographical bias of search engines. As a result, the US universities still lead the Ranking (MIT with its huge Open Courseware is again the first, followed by Harvard, Stanford and Berkeley), but the digital gap with their European counterparts (Cambridge and Oxford are in the region’s top) has been reduced. Even more important, some of the developing countries institutions reach high ranks, especially in Latin America where the University of Sao Paulo (38th) and UNAM (44th) benefits from the increasingly interconnected Brazilian and Mexican academic webspaces. Several countries improves their performance including Taiwan and Saudi Arabia with strong web oriented strategies, Czech Republic (Charles), the leader for Eastern Europe, Spain (Complutense) and Portugal (Minho, Porto) with huge repositories and strong Open Access initiatives. Norway (NTNU, Oslo), Egypt could be also mentioned. On the other side, the underrated are headed by France, with a very fragmented system, Korea, whose student-oriented websites are frequently duplicated, New Zealand, India or Argentina. Africa is still monopolized by South African universities (Cape Town is the first, 405th), as well as Australian Universities are the best ranked for Oceania (Australian National University, 77th) Other well performing institutions include Cornell or Caltech in the USA, Tokyo (24th) Toronto (28th), Hong Kong (91st), or Peking (104th). On the contrary, in positions below expected we find Yale, Princeton, Saint Petersburg, Seoul and the Indian Institutes of Science or Technology.
