HCSNet is offering a workshop that brings together people from different disciplines interested in Natural User Interfaces (NUI). This workshop will discuss the role NUI can play, themes of interest as well as future work that NUI enables. Do gestures completely replace typical mouse pointers or simply augment it for some functionality? Do all applications work with gestures or only a select few? The goal of this workshop is to make a first step in identifying challenges and characterising NUI design obstacles. Possible themes of interest include: * Multimodal interfaces * Robust spoken-language interaction * Intelligent user interfaces * Social interaction strategies * Gesture and embodied interaction * Conversational agents * Task and activity modelling * Environment-specific issues * Tangible and mobile devices We are pleased to announce a keynote presentation by Daniel Wigdor. Daniel is the User Experience Architect on the Microsoft Surface project, where he leads a team developing fundamentals of touch and gestural interaction. Before joining Microsoft, he conducted research in advanced user interfaces and devices at Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs, at the Initiative in Innovative Computing at Harvard University, and at the University of Toronto where he completed an MSc and a PhD in computer science, specializing in multi-surface direct-touch environments. Learn more about Daniel Wigdor. Our second international speaker is Jamie Zigelbaum. Jamie is now working at Oblong Industries in Los Angeles. He was a PhD student in the Tangible Media Group at the MIT Media Lab where he built and studied next generation computer interfaces. He specializes in gestural and tangible interfaces and works to create new interactions between humans and machines that enable the full use of our evolutionarily developed skills, expressive capabilities, and nuanced social behaviors. Oblong Industries is the developer of the g-speak spatial operating environment. Find out more about Oblong Industries. This workshop examines the NUI field as a base for future work within a multidisciplinary environment. The hope of this workshop is to develop a series of themes and design practices which have the potential to act as a base for future collaboration. We encourage those interested to participate in this workshop. Participants are required submit a short abstract discussing their thoughts on this field, and how it can fit within their existing work. HCSNet will fund a number of travel grants of up to $500 to help cover the costs of travel and accommodation for participants from outside the Melbourne area. Halpin (Leeds Metropolitan University, UK) and Steven Hick (Ottawa University, Canada) To be published by IGI Global Website: http://tinyurl.com/33hy2zw INTRODUCTION Intergovernmental agencies, governments and non-governmental organizations are now using Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) to collect, organize and disseminate information on peoples' rights, the promotion of human rights, and the protection of individuals and communities at risk. These efforts have moved beyond the traditional human rights regime, as more attention is being paid to rights based approaches to development, and to the interconnectedness of environmental protection, climate change and the wellbeing of humanity. As a result, ICT policies and practices are having an even more far-reaching effect on the enjoyment of human rights by all. Since 2001 ICTs have transformed the capacity of organisations, movements and oppressed communities to highlight human rights abuse, and to advocate for causes and victims of oppression. They make it easier to share and to access information; they facilitate human rights data aggregation and analysis; they offer innovative tactical approaches to campaigning; and they precipitate real-world campaigning and lobbying activities. They enable global participation, and give local actors and previously invisible groups international visibility. At the same time the features that make ICTs an effective tool for the promotion and protection of human rights also make them useful in the exploitation of people and the violation of human rights. They contribute directly and indirectly to the abuse of children, for example; they facilitate the distribution of material that is hostile to racial and religious groups; they threaten the security and the privacy of individuals; and they contribute to the operation of international trafficking and other criminal activities. OBJECTIVE OF THE BOOK Human Rights and Information Communication Technologies: Trends and Consequences of Use will provide a comprehensive examination of the use and application of information and communication technologies in the world of human rights. This will contribute significantly to understandings of the impact of ICTss on the promotion and protection of human rights in societies around the world. TARGET AUDIENCE This book will provide a valuable tool and insight for academics from a range of fields, including information management, information systems, communications, information technology, international relations, human rights, politics, law, and sociology. It will also be useful to international non-governmental organisations, non-governmental organisations, and governments, for policy and practice. RECOMMENDED TOPICS include, but are not limited to, the following: - the impact of ICT policies on human rights; - the role of information in the promotion and protection of human rights; - the opportunities and pitfalls of ICTs for human rights campaigning; - ICTs and human rights education; - Human rights activism in the information age; - communication rights, privacy and free speech; - human rights and the Internet; - ICTs and gender-based rights - Information systems deployment in human rights - Mobile technologies and their application to human rights - Human rights organizations and the application/deployment of ICT - Information security - Information poverty, exclusion, and social, economic and cultural implications SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before August 27th, 2010, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by October 8th 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by December 17th, 2010. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project. The purpose of this study was to investigate the determinants of mobile learning acceptance in higher education. Mobile learning is a rapidly growing method of learning that utilizes mobile devices to deliver content. Acceptance of mobile learning theory was derived from technology acceptance theories. The study developed a new model Mobile Learning Acceptance Model (MLAM) that extended the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The model explains the important factors that influence acceptance of mobile learning among university students. The population of the survey was limited to freshman students; this population was chosen because the literature indicated a presence of large technology literacy gap (techno-literacy gap) between universities and the new generation of students. Response rate was high at approximately 95%. Dear all, I am working on my dissertation right now about dialogic public relations via the WWW through the analysis of two official tourism websites. I would really appreciate your views on two aspects. One, if you could refer me to a document or publication to analyse what design features a website should have to interact with their audiences. There are hundreds of marketing articles on the internet but I would like to have a more academic expert and professional guidance which is your case. The second thing is to know what would be the average loading time to consider reasonable (less than 6 or 10 seconds?) one of my favorite authors on the subject remains jean francois blanchette. he co-authored this article on the importance of forgetfulness back in 2002: Blanchette, J.-F. & Johnson, D. “Data retention and the panoptic society: The social benefits of forgetfulness”, The Information Society 18(1):1-13 (January/February 2002). blanchette's work is also interesting because it reflects on the tension between the unforgetting internet, matters of data authenticity, and the huge problem of data preservation. and, here is an article that might be relevant about a court in the U.S. that accepted pictures from a social network site of a young woman enjoying a party a number of weeks after a car accident with casualties in which she was the driver.
