iPad as Research Tool

Thanks danah for showing us 1 way the iPad could be useful in research, rather than just entertainment or being kewl: "mine is bigger than your's." ***I still maintain that the iOS is an inadequate engine, and as for battery life, most peeps in all but poorest countries have electricity in their homes.*** Of course, we're kinda obsolescent, but when NetLab did the COnnected Lives interview, our piloting found that laptops were a distraction -- both intimadating and fascinating -- and we went to a modified paper-pen-stickynote data collection technique. I've seen lots on data analysis -- the Sunbelt Social Network conference was filled with dazzling ones -- but little on the pesky problem of getting the stuff in. After all the hype, I can't figger out why someone (even at Duke) would use an iPad rather than a netbook for their research. Sounds like kewl won over functionality. If I'm taking notes, I'd rather have a real keyboard. If I'm doing other stuff, I'd rather have the plethora of applications running on Win7/XP or MacOX than on the little apps running on iPods and iPhones with their baby OS. -- I've been using the iPhone 3GS for months now as a pocket phone etc and am continually frustrated on what it can't do. The crucial question for academics is: What in our current arsenal will the iPad replace? After using the device, the answer surprised me: the iPad makes a lousy computer replacement, but it does a great job of replacing paper. because it makes everyone talk and have discussions about a specific university. because it will annoy some and makes other salivate because it is useful for some things because it is still not something everyone has access because it has potential because it attracts potential grant money because people want to use it because it is quiet a aesthetic statement because, you name it. and none of those reasons has made me decide to buy the first generation but may be I will when it has the features I need for my research and life and then I will be able to have a because that justify the money spent on the device

I think the iPad allows for a more seamless integration of the web and the world. The clamshell design of a netbook versus the simple big screen on a tablet provide radically different experiences. I have always been uncomfortable with the always-tilted netbook screen at conferences/meetings/classes. I feel more connected when what I have is simply a small flat surface that can display whatever I want (papers, email, web-surfing). That the digital content is less removed from the world makes sense to me (perhaps it was all the Star Trek TNG growing up). Also, I have found the keyboard to not be an issue at all. Personally, I take notes by hand (the process of typing them is invaluable to me). My setup is a folding iPad case with the iPad on one side and a small paper notebook velcro’d on the other (call me a craft consumer). Opposed to the clamshell design of a netbook, this setup allows for handwritten notes, checking email and other surfing as well as typing – basically everything all in one super light weight little package that is FAST, does not need to be plugged in during the day, and does not tilt up and remove itself from its environment. All of this lets the device disappear in a way that netbooks don’t, providing a more fluid relationship between the web and my world. ~nathan

CFP: Game Studies Special Issues on Game Reward Systems Guest editors Mikael Jakobsson (mikael.jakobsson(a)mah.se) and Olli Sotamaa (olli.sotamaa(a)uta.fi) Digital games have a long history of rewarding players for their efforts. It can be in the form of treasures, items, easter eggs, highscores, character outfits, achievements, or badges. The prolific use of rewards indicates that they play an important part in shaping the gaming experience. On one hand, it seems obvious that we enjoy being rewarded, but on the other hand, it is harder to understand the fascination with these seemingly empty gestures, given their virtual nature. This special issue of Game Studies is dedicated to the exploration of all aspects of game rewards and game reward systems. We invite our potential authors to think about the topic in relation to game culture as well as game design, but also hope to attract papers exploring connections to other areas of research such as psychology, sociology, economy, education, and law. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: - Means for approaching and understanding game reward systems - Reward typologies: characteristics and qualities - The role of reward systems in relation to other game mechanics - Player motivations in relation to game achievements - History of reward systems within game culture and beyond - Reward systems in social media applications - Understanding rewards as motivators The call is for full papers in English. All submissions will undergo a double blind peer review process and be reviewed by at least two reviewers. Papers should be submitted to submit(a)gamestudies.com. facial recognition software

In very early July, the G20 met in Toronto. (Never let this circus come to your town.) As such, there was the inevitable demonstrations -- mostly peaceful but some violent -- and the inevitable police overreaction. I've heard credible reports of untended broken arm, etc. The usual investigations are taking place. The police are now talking about using facial recognition software to identify vandals. (Seems they grabbed 1K of the wrong people at the time.) One of the most solid areas of research by my mentor Charles Tilly [RIP] is that historically the police harm more people than vice-versa. I've just written to one of the investigating units that they use facial recognition software to identify the police who may have attacked civilians without provocation.
