Learning Analytics & Knowledge: February 27-March 1, 2011 in Banff, Alberta https://tekri.athabascau.ca/analytics/ The growth of data surpasses the ability of organizations to make sense of it. This concern is particularly pronounced in relation to knowledge, teaching, and learning. Learning institutions and corporations make little use of the data learners "throw off" in the process of accessing learning materials, interacting with educators and peers, and creating new content. In an age where educational institutions are under growing pressure to reduce costs and increase efficiency, analytics promises to be an important lens through which to view and plan for change at course and institutions levels. Corporations face pressure for increased competitiveness and productivity, a challenge that requires important contributions in organizational capacity building from work place and informal learning. Learning analytics can play a role in highlighting the development of employees through their learning activities. In enterprise settings, information flow and social interactions can yield novel insights into organizational effectiveness and capacity to address new challenges or adapt rapidly when unanticipated event arise. Thirdly, as we witness the expansion of learning and knowledge work beyond formal institutional boundaries, myriad platforms in the cloud hosting the activity of individuals will be providing/exchanging analytics. Advances in knowledge modeling and representation, the semantic web, data mining, analytics, and open data form a foundation for new models of knowledge development and analysis. The technical complexity of this nascent field is paralleled by a transition within the full spectrum of learning (education, work place learning, informal learning) to social, networked learning. These technical, pedagogical, and social domains must be brought into dialogue with each other to ensure that interventions and organizational systems serve the needs of all stakeholders. Learning Analytics 2011 will focus on integrating the technical and the social/pedagogical dimensions of learning analytics. Bests, Thomas --------> POST DOC POSITION <------------- Mission Research The mission concerns the analysis of the dynamics of the social link in the online communication. The mission joins within the framework of works on the various forms of sociability and their deployment on communication tools and online auto publication. The modeling of social graph allows drawing and analyzing large networks, to identify the communities which constitute them, and to unfold properties of nodes. These tools were recently applied successfully to the study of large social graphs, in particular built from phone calls or from online social platforms. A question still remains as for the qualification of the temporal evolution of these networks and these communities, beyond the comparison of snapshots of networks at the given time. The expected research consists in establishing metrics for the description of the evolution of the social networks, in particular the communities and linkage dynamics, by using the classic tools of networks analysis. The metrics eventually have to constitute a new axis of the social graphs understanding relative to their temporal dynamics. Once established, theses metrics have to help to focus the question of the nature of the links in the egocentered networks. They have to allow establishing a comparison of the various platforms, but also, within a platform data, to characterize the links according to the usage dynamics. Two axes will be processed by the candidate: - The temporal evolution of the social networks - The qualification and weightings of the links according to their properties, and users commitment dynamics Expected results The postdoc will: - Realize a review of literature on the recent works in analysis of social networks and on-line sociability (existing works, methods, tools) - Appropriate existing data and collect corpuses of data from Web (social networks platforms, user generated contents) - build relevant metrics & indicators for the analysis of the temporal dynamics of the online social links - Apply these indicators to the analysis of the temporal dynamics of egocentered networks, in a comparative approach - Apply these indicators to the various links between individuals to qualify these links (robustness, volatility, underlying dynamics of commitment) Profile The position is open to the PhD having defended their thesis for less than two years. Voice-recorders or mobile phones for face-to-face interviews with young people?

Dear Aoir-members, I was wondering if anyone on this list is familiar with using an Iphone with a voice-recorder application for recording face-to-face interviews. My intention is to use a mobile phone to record conversations with urban/ migrant youth about online identity practices. However, being aware of impression management and the impact of all sorts of props on the interview process, a traditional recording device might appear intimidating and/or too formal, and as the quality of recording opportunities on mobile phones increases, I was hoping to learn about possible earlier experiences of others on the list taking similar approaches? Hi all, I was wondering if any one of you is focusing on any Yahoo group for your research? Yahoo has just recently remodelled its Yahoo Groups site so that the new message format now resembles Facebook conversations and includes the members' avatars. My research looks at two egroups on Yahoo. I would like to ask forum members who are also looking at egroups about their concerns regarding this change as it relates to the conduct of their research? Research on skills supply to the video games and visual effects‏

Dear Colleagues, We are currently assisting NESTA (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and Art) with an independent review of the skills supply in the video games and visual effects industries in the UK. One aspect of the research is to identify existing academic literature on how schools, Further Education Institutions and Higher Education Institutions can improve the supply of adequately trained graduates to a sector that is experiencing chronic skills shortages. The existing academic literature focuses heavily on the impact of computer games on young people and how computer gaming can be used as a pedagogical tool. There is little about the skills that might be developed at school age to prepare students to become specialists in video games /VFX programming, or the teaching methods that might be implemented to help them. Can you point me in the direction of studies which have been conducted in the UK or internationally? We are particularly interested in evaluations of school programs that might have been implemented to prepare learners in this regard, and so examples of industry-school collaborations would also be appreciated.
