CALL FOR PAPERS - Panel: Digital politics: Collective action born in and from the Internet 6th ECPR General Conference, University of Iceland, 25th - 27th August 2011 DEADLINE for submission of paper abstracts: February 1, 2011 PANEL PRESENTATION: So far, political science research has focused on the use of the Internet by collective political actors that had their main operational base in the offline realm. First studies on the Internet and politics mainly concentrated mostly on well-established and traditional actors such public administration and political parties. Then the cope of research widened to include interest groups, NGOs and social movements looking at the impact of the Internet and the type of Internet use carried out by those groups. In particular, given the growing importance of political campaigns and other forms of collective action that are launched and carried out by networks of political actors, that mainly, if not completely operate and mobilize for their issues online, the debate on the Internet and politics could benefit further from considering actors who mainly operation with an online base. Interestingly, the emergence of collective action in online environments apparently follows new forms of "networked" forms of action and collaboration that are said to be different from political actors with a mainly offline base. The panel "Digital politics" aims to iniciate a discussion on the main organizational and democratic logic of the collective action born in and from the Internet addressing questions such as: What are the main characteristics of participation in online base collective action? How are boundaries drawn between the individual and the collective in such forms? How can we deal with the dialectics of individualization on one hand and the effects of de-personalization on the other hand that are inscribed in online spaces? How is the online space governed and how does its architecture structure online interaction? Finally, which methods are best suited to analyze the practices and dynamics of collective action online adequately? As you may note from the ECPR guidelines, panel organizers are advised to select no more than 5 papers (and no less than 4) as well as 2 further tabled papers. She explores the democratic logic of the Internet in knowledge-making processes and the relationship between governance models, participation and collaboration growth. She combined a large N statistical analysis and case study comparisons (World Social Forum, Flickr, Wikihow and Wikipedia). In 2008, she was visiting researcher at the School of Information – University of California Berkeley (sponsored by Howard Rheingold and Coye Cheshire) and provided teaching assistance at the Communication Department – Stanford University. Mayo co-wrote the books “Rethinking political organisation in an age of movements and networks” (English and Italian version XL Editorial, Rome 2007; Spanish version, Icaria Editorial, Barcelona 2008); "Activist research and social movements" (In Catalan, El Viejo Topo Editorial, Barcelona 2005); and, "Guide of social transformation of Catalonia" (In Catalan, Edicions Col.lectives, Barcelona, 2003). Johanna Niesyto is PhD student in political sciences. She works as research fellow in the project ‘Changing Protest and Media Cultures’ at the Collaborative Research Centre ‘Media Upheavals’ at the University of Siegen (Germany). Her key interests cover globalization, public spaces, democracy, political campaigns, contentious politics, political consumerism, cyber culture and social web. In her thesis she looks at Wikipedia as translingual public space of political knowledge production. Creative communities that design and develop commercial and non-commercial video games, as well as academic scholars studying video games, game play, human-computer interaction, and game culture are welcome to submit rigorous innovative work in the field. Game Papers explore key issues in video games, inform and substantively advance our current state of knowledge and understanding, and foster new areas for investigation that will drive the next generation of design and player experience. Suggested topics include: * Analysis and understanding of the player experience * Serious games * Social network games * Ethics and values in game play and design * Experimental game design and game genres * Social and cultural aspects of game play * Transmedia storytelling, world-building, and games * Avatars and character design * Sound design and music in games * Legal, and political aspects * Narrative in games * Aesthetic and critical analysis * Game and game culture preservation and archiving * Cross-cultural analyses * Networked play (including consoles) * Gender, race, and sexuality in games * Co-creative culture (for example., modding, machinima, iterative "live" design in collaboration with a game community) * Independent game development * Economics and business models in the game industry * Game production and labor Submitters are encouraged to submit papers on other relevant topics as well. Yet, there remain important open questions regarding how to translate results based on this perspective into design practice. Addressing these questions requires a greater sensitivity to when interactional privacy is applicable, a better understanding of suitable research methods, and more effective means for communicating results to the researcher and practitioner communities. The goal of this workshop is to bring privacy theory and design together. We seek participants from various domains for a multidisciplinary workshop to share their knowledge and views of both the theory and design of interactional privacy. Position papers are invited on the following topics: (1) Theoretical and empirical study of interactional privacy. (2) Ways of designing for interactional privacy. Submitted position papers will be peer-reviewed by a workshop committee. The organizers will disseminate the results at the CHI conference and plan to submit a proposal for a special issue in a relevant journal in response to an open Call for Papers. CFP: TRANSNATIONAL HCI: Humans, Computers and Interactions in Transnational Context A workshop at CHI 2011 May 8, 2011, Vancouver BC, Canada NEW Deadlines: * Submission deadline -*Feb 1, 2011 * * Notification of acceptance - *Feb 14, 2011 * * Workshop at CHI2011 - May 8, 2011 Recent studies in Human-Computer Interaction have turned to examining computing in non-Western contexts, increasingly recognizing that technologies and activities of their participants are not bounded by single geographies, cultures, or borders. In our interactions with everyday technologies, we are increasingly tied to people and machines in other countries, cultures and networks. Such activities require us to consider technologies not just in national, but also in a transnational context. That is, humans, computers and interactions not limited to single countries or cultures, but forming communities across spaces, managing boundary-crossings, and forming hybrid practices. This workshop will bring together researchers and designers across academia and industry to address the effects, implications, and design opportunities for individuals and communities who engage in transnational technological practices. We seek participants to explore the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in transnational settings for our workshop, TRANSNATIONAL HCI, at CHI 2011. We aim to assemble an interdisciplinary group of practitioners to expand current work on ICTs in global processes, to develop a language and toolset for the study of technologies in transnational spaces, and to address the role of ICTs for local-global user interaction, collaboration across boundaries and negotiations of power relations. Examples of possible paper topics include, but are not limited to: * The use of pervasive technologies such as multiplayer gaming across borders * Studies of social networking among Diaspora communities * Use of ICTs in censorship state zones * The role of ICTs in reconfiguring "the local" * Technology in the context of international migration and politics * Cross-cultural collaboration Submissions that develop theoretical approaches, report on empirical work or on technology design are welcome, and need not be limited to "developing world" sites. Full papers may later be solicited for a potential special issue. We welcome applications from researchers, designers, practitioners and scholars across the subdomains of human-computer interaction and beyond, in the fields of anthropology, sociology, science and technology studies, critical theory, communication, media studies and cultural geography.
