http://findingada.com/ Ada Lovelace Day aims to raise the profile of women in science, technology, engineering and maths by encouraging people around the world to talk about the women whose work they admire. This international day of celebration helps people learn about the achievements of women in STEM, inspiring others and creating new role models for young and old alike. The inspiration for Ada Lovelace Day came from psychologist Penelope Lockwood, who carried out a study which found that women need to see female role models more than men need to see male role models. "Outstanding women can function as inspirational examples of success," she said, "illustrating the kinds of achievements that are possible for women around them. They demonstrate that it is possible to overcome traditional gender barriers, indicating to other women that high levels of success are indeed attainable." The day begins in Kiribati, the easternmost country in the world, and continues for a mindbending 50 hours, ending in American Samoa. Ada Lovelace Day is on 7th October 2011 and we encourage you to talk about women in stem that you admire and add your story to our directory so that others can find and read it. Dear colleagues, we invite you to submit your paper proposals to our panel "Technology and Higher Education: The Role of the Internet" (RC11: Science and Politics http://www.ipsa.org/my-ipsa/events/madrid2012/panel/technology-and-higher-e…) for the International Political Science Association (IPSA) World Congress. Chair: Mauro Calise (University of Naples Federico II, IPSA Portal Editor) Discussants: Michael Brintnall (APSA Executive Director) The modern information and communication technologies promise to improve the quality, flexibility and effectiveness of higher education. Students are more and more computer and IT literate and, for their part, universities are realizing that the new technologies are one of the most important springboards for innovation. The introduction of new technologies into teaching is progressing along similar lines to those seen in other fields some years before. One example is that of libraries and the way they organize the output of the knowledge industry. The progressive integration of new multi-media technologies with teaching methodologies is creating an environment of virtual knowledge-sharing through the interconnection of learning and teaching spaces. Following these considerations, this panel looks into the new methodologies and new tools used to study and research online, it investigates how computers and the Web can be used to improve student learning and skills development, how the Internet can enhance traditional teaching and learning methods, how scientists design and implement the innovations, looks at experiences and innovative projects in the universities, and more generally at the cutting-edge approaches and techniques that can be applied in social sciences. Case studies, applications of new methodologies and tools are welcome. ICT4D (Information and Communication Technologies for Development), emerging markets, new forms of mobility, and the internationalization of organizations dominate contemporary conversations about information and communication technology. Whether in academia or industry, all agree that technology design and research today must consider the role these globalizing processes play in the way people collaborate, interact and exchange ideas across national and cultural boundaries. The focus of this special issue is on the relations between transnational processes and technology practice, design and research. We are especially interested in characterizing the theoretical, methodological, and empirical challenges of our work in transnational settings in a way that will be useful for future research and design in this area. For example, what analytical and methodological frames from within the HCI tradition offer new approaches to this empirical context, and which of our existing frames require reconsideration? How does "Transnational HCI" engage with or challenge ICT4D or Reflexive HCI? Thinking interdisciplinarily, what can the broader HCI community learn by drawing on work in other disciplines, such as information studies, anthropology, media and cultural studies, communications, science and technology studies? How can HCI contribute a novel perspective on transnationalism and technology to those disciplines as well? We encourage papers that represent a variety of disciplinary perspectives and analytical approaches. True to the "transnational" perspective, submissions do not have to be limited to "developing world" sites. Examples of topics that fall into the scope of this special issue include but are not limited to: . The network society: global flows, frictions and politics in local-global technology use . Cross-cultural collaboration and culture as encounter . Communication and collaboration across boundaries (not just the nation-state) . scraping google discussion groups?

Has anybody successfully scraped a Google discussion group? I found a script online, but it's thrown off by the fact you now have to login to view any groups. Google is getting squirrely about spammers scraping their data, so it may be a big roadblock. I'm looking at authorization with the Google PHP lib, but I'm not sure it will get me to groups, it all seems app-focused (so if you want to add items to a Google calendar for instance). Tenure-Track Positions in Media, Technology, and Society The Department of Communication Studies at Northwestern University seeks to hire for two tenure-track appointments in media, technology, and society; the appointments will begin September 1, 2012. Both appointments will be at the level of assistant professor. The successful candidates will be expected to publish innovative research, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and perform professional service commensurate with rank. Potential to attract external funding is expected. Candidates should have an interest in health communication and/or in media industries and institutions. Areas of expertise include but are not limited to: health care organizations and networks; health applications of communication technology; digital media uses; traditional and new media organizations; media arts and culture; entertainment and gaming; media and democracy; media and policy formation; and political communication.
