Invitation to the International Joint Workshop on Immigrant Inclusion by e-Participation, November 2-3 2011, Helsinki Immigrant Inclusion by eParticipation (IIeP) –project is organizing an international joint workshop dealing with immigrants and cultural minorities and their e-participation processes. Target groups: Authorities in national and local level involved in e-democracy and e-governance, persons from immigrant and multicultural non-governmental organisations as well as researchers and others in related fields interested in e-democracy and inclusion of immigrants in participatory decision-making. Aim of the International Joint Workshop: Creating a discussion forum and a dialogue between authorities, NGO actors and immigrant societies on immigrant inclusion by e-participation. There will be cross-border exchange of best results as experienced in practice, in projects or in research. The sessions will all have participatory elements such as discussions, collaboration, brainstorms and debates and will utilize participatory tools and methods. E-participation will be also possible, the links will appear later. Good online learning systems require emotional communications happened in-between the tutors and the learners. Emotions play an important role when users engage in career or drama training, or language learning situations via role-play. Interpreting player experience and affect from open-ended verbal communication and diverse body language has been challenging research tasks. It further promotes the importance of such studies when employing diverse game-play modalities (e.g. mobile interfaces and augmented reality platforms) and when recognizing affect and mood from metaphorical affective expressions, dialogue context, emotionally ambiguous or non-prototypical spoken utterances, facial expressions and gestures. Such research is significantly beneficial to the development of intelligent virtual agents which are capable of interpreting social relationships, context, general mood and emotion, sensing or reasonably predicating others' inter-conversion, identifying its role and participating intelligently in open-ended interaction. How to develop a system which can identify user's emotion and/or present its feelings to the user according to user's words, behaviors, and performance in online learning is definitely an important, a very helpful as well an interesting research topic. The purpose of this special issue is to explore how models, theories, and solutions of emotion intelligence can be used in online learning and what benefits users can receive from such emotion intelligence-embedded systems and agents. ***Apologies for cross-postings*** Mobile Communication, Community and Locative Media Practices: From the Everyday to the Revolutionary 2012 International Communication Association (ICA) Pre-conference Workshop May 23 – 24, 2012, Phoenix AZ, USA Conference website: http://sociomobile.org/mobile2012/ Keynote Speaker: Mimi Sheller (Drexel University, USA) Mobile and location-based networked interactions permeate our world. We no longer enter the Internet--we carry it with us. We experience it while moving through physical spaces. Smart phones, GPS receivers, and RFID tags are only a few examples of location-aware mobile technologies that mediate our interaction with networked spaces and the people in them. Increasingly, our physical location determines the types of information with which we interact, and the people and things we find around us. These new kinds of networked interactions manifest in everyday social practices that are supported by the use of mobile technologies, such as participation in location-based mobile games and social networks, engagement with location-based services, development of mobile annotation projects, and social mapping, just to name a few. The engagement with these practices has important implications for identity construction, our sense of privacy, our notions of place and space, civic and political participation, building community, policy making, as well as cultural production and consumption in everyday life. This preconference will provide a venue for innovative scholars from around the world who are doing research in exploring how we experience our locally-rooted mobile networked interactions and mobile communication’s impact on community. It will give them a chance to gather and discuss the challenges that this shift in the use of both mobile phones and the Internet poses not only for the users but for those doing research on mobile communication. We welcome abstracts that will focus on the following areas: § Mobile communication and location awareness in everyday life practices; § New urban spatialities developed with mobile gaming and locative social media; definitions of “community” in a mobile mediated context § Privacy and surveillance issues as they relate to location-based social networks; § Identity and spatial construction through locative media art / performance design and its impact on communities; § Civic engagement and political participation through mobile social media, new mapping practices and location-aware technologies; § Learning and education potentials of mobile and location-based media; The two-day preconference will be comprised of formal panel presentations, one keynote speaker, opportunities for informal discussions, and time for networking. archival/search tools for Sina and Weibo?

Hi all, I have a student who is interested in studying how Chinese microblogs compared to traditional media outlets in covering the July 23 train accident in Wenzhou. She's been looking at Sina and Weibo, and having trouble getting any kind of helpful search results -- the best she's been able to do is trace back individual users who were know to have posted about it from the present back to late July. I've used Twapper Keeper to get a targeted archive of old tweets, and I'm wondering if anybody knows of any similar third-party tools for Sina and/or Weibo.
