Hi, AOIR, Given this group's interest in emerging media forms, I wanted to let you know: The Electronic Literature Organization has just released: The Electronic Literature Collection, Volume 2: http://collection.eliterature.org/2/ Containing over 60 works from artists around the world, this second anthology of e-lit published by the Electronic Literature Organization offers a wide array of digital texts from traditional e-lit forms, such as literary hypertext, to newer genres using social media tools and new literary environments. These works can offer a glimpse of emerging writing forms employed in literary pursuits. The new collection presents both veteran authors and newcomers with an increased presence of non-English works and contributions from beyond the US. WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY: The Department of Communication Studies invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 1, 2011, and subject to budgetary approval. We are seeking a communication studies scholar whose research is in critical internet studies. The preferred candidates will have a strong research record and a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, especially at the undergraduate level. More specifically, their scholarship will address critical social, cultural, and media theory and will be located in at least one of the following three areas: * The Internet, politics and the constitution of publics. Specific topics of research may include hacktivism; social movements; net activism; social media and political communication; * Critical studies of Internet policy. Specific topics of research may include governmentalities of the Internet and World Wide Web; broadband and media convergence; net neutralities, privacies, and intellectual properties; network protocols and device standards; * Critical analysis of the “new information economy” and Internet/Web centric corporations. Candidates will be expected to teach CS101 Mass Communication in Canada, and two or more of the following: CS260 Communication, Culture, Policy; CS322 Gender, Communication and Culture; CS333 Alternative Media; and will be expected to contribute to our curriculum in the area of research methodologies (feminist, internet, participatory action research). Candidates will also be expected to contribute to our existing undergraduate and graduate programs in terms of teaching and supervision. Applicants must have a completed PhD in Communication Studies or a cognate discipline by the time of the appointment. Italicizing Wikipedia? CMS15 v. CMS16

This is more arcane than even the citation discussion, but I wonder if anyone else has been noted how CMS16 might affect your work? [[ http://reagle.org/joseph/blog/method/italicizing-wikipedia 2011 Feb 10 | Italicizing Wikipedia? CMS15 v. CMS16 In my writing up to now, I italicize Britannica because it is a book. I never italicize Wikipedia or blog names because as The Chicago Manual of Style 15th edition notes: "websites, if titled, should be set in Roman, headline style, without quotation marks" (8.199). However, the new 16th edition says much more: General titles of websites mentioned or cited in text or notes are normally set in roman, headline-style, without quotation marks. An initial the in such titles should be lowercased in midsentence. Titled sections, pages, or special features on a website should be placed in quotation marks. Titles of the types of works discussed elsewhere in this chapter (i.e., books, journals, etc.) should usually be treated the same whether they are published in print or online. Some websites share the name of a printed counterpart, and others (such as Wikipedia) are analogous to one of the types of works discussed elsewhere in this chapter; these titles should be styled accordingly. (8.186) I presume Wikipedia should be italicized since it is done in Chicago's prose above. Looking for a justification, we see that in the documentation section for blogs: Titles of websites are generally set in roman without quotation marks and capitalized headline-style, but titles that are analogous to books or other types of publications may be styled accordingly. Titled sections or pages within a website should be placed in quotation marks. Specific titles of blogs—which are analogous to periodicals—should be set in italics; titles of blog entries (analogous to articles in a periodical) should be in quotation marks. (14.244) And for "Dictionaries and encyclopedias online" we see: Online versions of encyclopedias should be cited like their printed corollaries. In addition, in the absence of a posted publication or revision date for the cited entry, supply an access date. If the article includes a recommended form for the URL, include it; otherwise, include a short form of the URL (as in the second example) from which interested readers may enter the search term. If a DOI for the article is available, use that instead. (14.248) Now, I always feel hesitant to infer a prose guideline from the bibliographic guidelines, but since the change is apparent in the bibliographic guideline, and they give an example in the prose guideline, I suppose this means we should italicize online reference works and blogs? However, I don't feel quite prepared to leave the trusted 15th (published in 2003) and it will take a while for software (such as David Fussner's biblatex-chicago-notes-df) to follow. ]]

SMALL MEDIA SYMPOSIUM 2011 | CALL FOR ABSTRACTS The Small Media Initiative invites submission of abstracts for its 2011 Small Media Symposium to be held at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London on 8 – 9 April 2011. In August 2010, Wired published an article entitled From Samizdat to Twitter: How Technology is Making Censorship Irrelevant. Is it? Indeed, for many, samizdat is a relic from the distant analog past. A quick glance at the news seems to suggest that we are living in the digital age of Twitter revolutions. The role played by social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube in contentious politics continues to be passionately debated by academics, activists, politicians and pundits. While there are plenty of examples of creative new politics, the recent protests in Burma, China, Iran, and Egypt remind us that governments can simply shut communication down. The question then becomes where do we go after moving from samizdat to Twitter? What alternative channels and technologies of communication can facilitate the flow of information when authoritarian regimes flick the kill switch and what alternative political practices can we invent to circumscribe state repression? The February events in Egypt suggest that alternatives can be as low-tech as the paper leaflets with practical and tactical advice for demonstrators that have been circulating in Cairo or as high-tech as the speak-to-tweet application that lets individuals dial a phone number and leave (or listen to) a message translated to text on a Twitter page. These alternatives we call small media, while others call them alternative media, participatory media, and social movement media. This wide range of communicative and political practices will be the focus of the Small Media Symposium that will take place at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London on 8-9 April 2011. Areas of Interest The symposium, to include a conference open to the public on 8 April 2011 and closed-door workshops on 9 April 2011, aims to bring together theorists and practitioners across all disciplines and sectors, including academics, activists and developers, to foster discussions about small media theory, practice and innovation. We invite contributions by academics and practitioners on a wide range of topics and a wide range of approaches related to small media. Research, practical experience insights, product demonstrations, case studies, work-in-progress/posters, conceptual papers and proposals for workshop themes are all welcome. Possible areas of focus include but are not limited to: - small media theory: concepts and framing - state/media dynamics - un/successful use of small media - promotion of small media - distribution of small media - sustainability of small media - the changing nature of politics, political practice - the role of human networks - imagination and emotion in small media: beyond the counter-information paradigm - organizing small media democratically: problems and challenges Deadline and submission details The deadline for submission of an abstract (400 – 600 words) is 10 March 2011. Yet many among scientists, academics and experts are reluctant to contribute to Wikipedia, despite a growing number of calls from the scientific community to join the project [2-3]. The Wikimedia Research Committee [4] has just launched a survey to understand why scientists, academics and other experts do (or do not) contribute to Wikipedia, and whether individual motivation aligns with shared perceptions of Wikipedia within expert communities. We hope this may help us identify ways around barriers to expert participation. The survey is anonymous and takes about 20 min to complete.
