IR 12 Resistance and Technology Roundtable

All, I am putting together a Roundtable to submit to IR 12 (see below). Besides myself, Amoshuan Toft ( U of WA Bothell) and John Anderson (U of IL) have signed on. Of particular interest are those whose research/experience crosses collective action/social movements, media and new media, and personal experiences with resistance movements. Diverse and interesting perspectives are welcome including but not limited to legal, regulatory, political, social, cultural, rhetorical, technical..., well, you get the idea. Resistance and Technology Roundtable (Brief DRAFT version) Recent successful and unsuccessful resistance actions such as the revolts in Iran, Tunisian, and Egypt, hackivism by Anonymous on corporate and organizational websites as well as the ongoing Wikileaks release of State Department documents highlight the role of digital technology in resistance to power. The limits and legitimacy of this activity is currently the subject of much debate. Issues include the definition of journalism and journalist, the limits and responsibilities of information and service providers, and the scope of legitimate action in digital environments and the relevance of physical space analogies to such actions. Even the role of the efficacy and centrality of digital communication in protest actions or movements has been hotly contested. While the use of technology in protests from the barricade to radio to Twitter play a role in resistance, the question is to what degree do these technologies enable or shape resistance and influence outcomes in comparison to other social, political, and cultural factors? -TED -- Ted M. *Call for chapters in an edited volume on* *Internet and Emotions * Research Network 11 of the European Sociological Association (Sociology of Emotions) is engaged in editing a series of books that will focus on various aspects of emotions in society. The intended volume on *Emotions and Internet* is part of this endeavor. It emerged out of discussions in recent conferences and the interest of members of RN 11 in studying the interplay between new forms of virtual environment enabled by the internet and emotions. The book will collect cutting-edge articles that deal empirically and theoretically with internet and emotions, as well as make an attempt to map and theorize this emerging scholarly field. * * During the last couple of decades, at least two novel processes that are of interest to our planned project have been evolving. The first is the penetration of the Internet into virtually every sphere of social life. From friendship, dating, and shopping to economic, political, cultural, and social practices, from social networking to virtual conferencing, no aspect of life as we knew and understood it has remained unaffected. It can be claimed that the Internet is no longer just another tool that people use, but an environment within which people operate and live. The second development that has occurred during these two decades has been the advent of the sociological study of emotions. Theoretical and empirical scholarship has refined our understanding of emotions and the emotional world and has demonstrated that emotions are present in every aspect of social life and play an important role in central processes and structures. The purpose of the present book is to explore the emotional aspects and processes occurring within this new socio-virtual environment. As new emotional practices emerge, new emotional feed-back loops are built, and new emotional language and manifestations crystallize on the Internet, we need to study them empirically and to theorize them. There are ample examples of possible questions. For example, the phenomenon of flaming has received attention among communications scholars but the general question of the language of emotions that is evolving on internet communication has not been explored before. Or the question of feeling rules and emotions display rules in the virtual world; the ways in which anonymity and disembodiment affect the disclosure of emotions on the Internet; the differences and similarities among various genres of CMC as far as the expression of emotions is concerned, etc. are yet to be explored. We are seeking both theoretical and empirical contributions that focus on issues that emerge at the intersection of emotions and Internet at three levels of social organization: The micro level, of the individual and dyadic relations; the mezzo level of groups, organizations, social movements and community, and the macro societal, transnational networks level. Internet and media scholars dealing with some aspect of emotions are particularly welcome to submit their work. I am enjoying highlighting academic books on my Kindle and then sharing these quotes on facebook and twitter. Kindle offers this experimental service. Many friends share web pages from traditional media to start debates or express opinions on facebook. Being slightly more academic than many of my friends I can now share book quotes. The potential for academic debate within a social network platform is improved. This is a new academic forum I suppose. *With apologies for cross-posting* The Institute for Social Research, Swinburne University of Technology and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Creative Industries and Innovation present an evening of public lectures by Joe Karaganis (Social Science Research Council, New York) and Ravi Sundaram (Sarai/Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi) on the topic of media piracy and informal economies. 1. MEDIA PIRACY IN EMERGING ECONOMIES: Joe Karaganis This presentation will introduce a major collaborative study of music, film, and software piracy conducted in India, Brazil, South Africa, Russia, and Mexico between 2007 and 2010. The study focuses on the relationship between the licit and illicit media markets in these countries, and on the emergence of enforcement as a primary concern of the knowledge economy. Joe Karaganis is Media, Technology and Culture program director at the Social Science Research Council in New York. His work focuses on changes in the organization of cultural production in the digital context and on the intersection between information policy and social practice. He is editor of the collection Structures of Participation in Digital Culture (SSRC, 2007). 2. POSTCOLONIAL MEDIA AFTER THE INFORMAL: Ravi Sundaram Informality has arrived on the postcolonial media landscape with a kinetic force in the last two decades. More media is now distributed through bazaars, small markets, street vendors and neighbourhood retail that ever before. Informality is seen as a threat by large media industries, who see it as distributing pirate media or simply indifferent to the Law of Property. Informality, once a grey zone of paralegal production and work for economists, now presents media research with a series of new research questions. What are the stakes for media after the informal? What is the relationship between the practices of postcolonial informality and the larger landscape of new media? Is there a connection between the street market and the world after Wikileaks? This lecture will suggest that we are entering a new media condition today that may disrupt many of the received models of cultural modernity of the last 100 years. Ravi Sundaram is a Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi and Co-Director of the Sarai programme on media and urban culture. He is the author of Pirate Modernity: Delhi's Media Urbanism (Routledge, 2009). CFP: The Global South and the Global Cyberspace (4S, Nov. 2-5, 2011, Cleveland)

I am organizing a 4S session that would be of interest to many AOIR members. This year 4S (the Society for Social Studies of Science) is meeting in Cleveland on November 2-5, 2011. This session is organized in collaboration with the Latin American Network of 4S but submissions involving other regions in the south are also very much welcome. If you are interested in participating, please send an abstract of a paper (minimum 250 words, maximum of 400 words) to yuri.takhteyev(a)utoronto.ca by March 7, 2011. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Session Title: The Global South and the Global Cyberspace Fifteen years ago an American poet living in California proclaimed the Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace, a world “both everywhere and nowhere,” foretelling the coming obsolescence of the “Governments of the Industrial World” from China to the United States, thanks to the rise of the new digital information and communication technologies. In the following years, those technologies have played a key role in the visions of the coming globalized world. At the same time, the Cyberspace has for the most part been a “northern” domain. This panel will explore the place of the Global South in the Global Cyberspace, as well as more broadly the relationship between ICTs and globalization in southern contexts. We welcome papers looking at how ICTs are used by different actors as tools in their own globalization projects, as well as papers looking at the increasing globalization of the development of ICTs. The latter could include the more recent outsourcing of what used to be considered “northern” high-tech work to the south, the increased role of the distributed communities of software developers (including those working on free / open source software), as the well as the more mundane importation of “northern” ICTs into the southern contexts. The papers should focus on the Global South, including in particular Latin America, considering either the south-north ties or the lateral ties between southern regions.
