CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS James W. Carey Media Research Award 2011 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.com/ The Carl Couch Center invites self-nominations for works to be considered for its annual James W. Carey Media Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes works on topics that have been central to Carey's scholarship. Submissions might focus on technology, time, space and communication, the nature of public life, the relation between journalism and popular culture -- among others -- taking these themes in new or different directions. Applications will be evaluated based on engagement with Carey's approaches and concepts, originality, and advancement of knowledge. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of: Prof. Stuart Adam, Carleton University Prof. Theodore L. Glasser, Stanford University Prof. John Pauly, Marquette University Prof. Jeff Pooley, Muhlenberg College Prof. Linda Steiner, University of Maryland Prof. Lance Strate, Fordham University Both single and multiple authored works will be accepted. All submissions must be works that have been published or have been accepted for publication in a book or journal. To be considered for the 2011 award, works should have been published or accepted in 2010. Those interested please submit a copy of their works electronically to Mark D. If the work submitted is a paper, a 100-word abstract needs to be included. Paper length is limited to 30 pages plus references. If a book is submitted, a copy of the table of contents and one chapter are sufficient. The application deadline is April 1, 2011. Notification of award application will be sent out by June 15. Egypt: Assessing Facebook, Twitter, social networks

It's clear to all readers of Twitter and the MSM that Facebook and Twitter played a role in the Egyptian movement that toppled Mubarak. But how much of a role? More generally, how much were social networks involved? There's so much speculation, that I really don't want more. BUT I would appreciate systematic evidence -- be it ethnographic, online analyses, or survey based -- even though it may be early for that to appear. I am thinking of the work that Joe Feagin did on 1968's ghetto riots; the ongoing work of Doug McAdam over the years. I wonder if anyone interviewed the folks in Tahrir Square (besides the secret police), just as Feagin interviewed folks in Detroit jails, and would love to read some personal accounts. CITASA's Student Paper Award recognizes a published or unpublished paper/book chapter, or the design or use of a communication or information technology that provides an exceptional contribution to the sociology of communications or the sociology of information technology.The award is open to students in other disciplines than sociology. Students do not need to be members of ASA or CITASA. Authorship: Books, chapters, articles, papers and computing applications may have multiple authors. In the case of student-faculty collaborations, the student must be the lead or senior author. Authors need not have a degree in sociology or be in a sociology department to be considered for an award. Submissions must be in English and written within the two calendar years prior to the award deadline for nominations. There are no limitations on length. All materials for this award are due March 15, 2011. CALL FOR PAPERS Electronic Journal of Communication / La Revue Electronique de Communication Special Issue: Videoconferencing in Practice: 21st Century Challenges Editor: Sean Rintel (s.rintel@uq edu.au) Deadline: June 27, 2011. The issue is scheduled for publication in the first half of 2012. While not yet ubiquitous, videoconferencing can certainly be said to have come of age at the end of the first decade of the 21st century. The capabilities of videoconferencing systems have improved while barriers have been significantly lowered to the point where videoconferencing is no longer extraordinary, albeit still quite novel. This special issue of the Electronic Journal of Communication invites contributions exploring how videoconferencing has become a practical method of interaction in personal, professional, pedagogical, and institutional contexts. Contributors should have a central concern with whether and how users attend to the affordances and constraints of videoconferencing as relevant to the business at hand. The issue will seek to cover a broad range of subjects to provide a snapshot of 21st century videoconferencing research from a Communication perspective. As such, all authors are asked to include in their literature review and conclusions some sense of how their study deals with questions of Communication research in general, and Communication-focused videoconferencing research in particular. Manuscripts are invited that cover one of the following areas, or authors may propose their own area that demonstrably adds to the goal of the special issue: * Case studies of practical videoconferencing in context. * Survey studies of practical videoconferencing in context. * Experimental studies that show practical behaviours that may be specific to contexts or cut across contexts. * Literature reviews that focus on changes or critiques of videoconferencing findings and/or theories. * Representations of videoconferencing in the mass media or other venues of the public imagination. * Methodological studies about research practices or methods for capturing/analysing videoconferencing in context. * Trouble using videoconferencing in context (e.g. constraints of the medium, communication trouble, operational problems such as network trouble, work-arounds). * Adoption/take-up studies of practical videoconferencing in context. Authors are welcome to contact the editor to discuss ideas for manuscripts. Given the topic and the electronic nature of the journal, authors are also encouraged to supply video and/or audio clip examples or supplemental materials. Submission detail are as follows: * Deadline for completed manuscripts is June 27, 2011. Global statistics on teenager and young adult online media production

[Apologies for cross-posting for those that are subscribed to multiple related lists.] Hi all, Over the past five years there have been a few studies by the Pew Center and others (Ezster Hargittai/colleagues) that have given us some nice descriptive statistics of the percentage of American teenagers and young adults circulating various kinds of media content online: writing, photographs, art work, music, and others. I was wondering if anyone on this list knows of any similar statistics from other countries or global regions, either at a country level, a regional level, or even of a group that is argued to be representative of larger regions (e.g. Hargittai's studies of college freshmen). Some studies of American populations: Hargittai and Walejko 2008. The Participation Divide: Content Creation and Sharing in the Digital Age. http://webuse.org/p/a23/ Lenhart et al. 2007. Teen Content Creators. http://pewresearch.org/pubs/670/teen-content-creators Lenhart et al. 2010. Social Media and Young Adults. http://www.pewinternet.org/Reports/2010/Social-Media-and-Young-Adults.aspx (If there are studies of American populations that might enhance some of these numbers, or even challenge them, that would be nice to know as well.) I couldn't find anything in the EU Kids Go Online project specifically on "content creation" or "creative production" but I easily may have missed something there. The Creative Commons' study on "Defining Non-commercial production" is helpful. (https://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/17127) Any study with broad descriptive statistics of these kinds of activities would be helpful, even if it's only with adults, however that legal category may defined in various countries.
