Full details: http://game.itu.dk/index.php/Beyond_Sports_vs._Games_workshop * Description:* Ten years of game studies have passed with little exploration of sports as a key link in the study of computer gaming. Despite the huge popularity of sports titles, the growth of e-sports, or the general adoption of “sporting attitudes” and practices, not much work has been done to unpack the nature of computer game play as sport. Conversely, forty years of sports studies have produced only limited consideration of the practices and research taking place on digital playing fields. The time is long overdue for these research fields to mingle. With computer games as a central focus point, this one-day workshop looks to embrace interdisciplinary perspectives on sports and computer games, prompting a richer conversation about the nature of digital play by bringing to the foreground a sports orientation. This workshop will be of particular interest to researchers working in sports and/or game studies. We welcome an interdisciplinary mix. Drawing from a variety of perspectives including (but not limited to) game studies, game design research, game history, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, leisure studies, and sports studies, workshop participants will present original research on the subject. Topics can range from empirical studies to theoretical or conceptual work that uses sports as a new interpretive frame for digital play. MT (rule-based, statistical and hybrid) is now available for many languages for free (on the Web) or for a fee and MT technologies are making strong inroads into the corporate localisation and translation industries as well as large public and administrative organisations dealing with multi-lingual content. Open-source MT solutions are competing with proprietary products. Increasing numbers of (professional) translators are post-editing TM/MT output. MT is a reality for internet users accessing and gisting content which is not available in their native language. Reading Communities from Salons to Cyberspace

Dear List Members, some of you might be interested in a book I've edited. "Reading Communities from Salons to Cyberspace," published by Palgrave Macmillan, is now available in Australia, Canada, the US, and the UK. The collection contains 10 essays that build upon the influential work of book historians who question the assumption of the isolated individual reader. The authors in this collection draw attention to the relationships readers forge with one another and demonstrate how these social interactions influence the very personal relationship a reader enjoys with a book. Along with the assumption that shared reading is both a social process and a social formation, there are three distinct links evident in the reading communities presented in Reading Communities from Salons to Cyberspace: 1) the notion of community, and questions about what constitutes community; 2) the role of education; and, 3) mixed-method forms of inquiry. The authors present cogent and lively discussions of a wide variety of communal reading practices, and in the process demonstrate that intellectual rewards accrue when we set aside obstructive disciplinary, theoretical and methodological assumptions. IXmaps [http://www.ixmaps.ca] presents a geographic visualization of paths or routes taken by URL requests over the internet – presenting information about internet data exchange points along the way demonstrating key features of internet routing and cloud computing that impact personal privacy. IXmaps displays a map of North America (Google Earth) on which is rendered the data route and information about interconnection points. Information revealed thus far includes the physical location, ownership, networks and ISPs, deep packet inspection and NSA surveillance as well as known links or alliances among the building owners, clients, and government or corporate entities. We are taking this opportunity to launch a user friendly new version of our data gathering software TRgen which we hope you might use to see where your data traffic goes - through what facilities and at the same time assist our data gathering capabilities. +++++++++ Apologies for Cross-Posting - Please Forward to Interested Colleagues ++++++++++ Information Technology and People Special Issue on [location] <location> {location;} Call for Papers Smartphones have enjoyed phenomenal growth in the latter part of the first decade of this century. By 2012 sales of such devices are predicted to outstrip sales of PCs, and by 2015 more people will be accessing the internet with such devices than they will be with a PC. Key to the growth and popularity of such devices has been the convergence, not just of telecomms and photographic equipment, which helped drive mobile phone sales, and the addition of internet access, which defined the smartphone, but the addition, following the success of in-car satellite navigation devices, of GPS receivers into mobile internet devices. The integration of GPS technology into smartphones, coupled with the consumer-led approach of Apple’s iPhone, gave birth to a whole new class of location-based services for mobile internet devices, available in particular for the iPhone, but also for Android, and other devices. As our lives become increasingly encroached upon by the digital virtuality of our exponentially advancing information society, will this be at the cost of our humanity? Writers such as Sherry Turkle and others seem to believe this is already happening in circles of people sitting together in silence engaging with their smartphones. When our senses are surrounded by interactive exposure to telepresent realities – the faces of those we are speaking to across the world overlaid upon the world before our eyes, streams of data passing across the pavements and shopfronts as we pass, electronic voices calling our name and tantalising us with goods they know we want (famously envisaged in the movie, Minority Report) – when the worlds around us are both real and virtual, will this grant us additional scope to express our humanity, or constitute such an overload that engagement fatigue exhausts our faculties? At our off-grid holiday resorts in rugged mountainous territory or remote wilderness encampments, luxuriating in isolation-downtime, delighting in the simplicities of one-to-one, face-to-face conversation with no distractions, in natural landscape with no overlaid streams of historical and commercial data, out beyond the boundaries of location aware personal shopping avatars telling us where to get what they already know we would ‘Like’, will we savour a richer, more traditional humanity we feel the hi-tech virtuality-soaked everyday of our lives has come to miss? Or does this vision of a virtu-reality that beckons in the coming decade mistake digital virtuality for something other than simply the latest manifestation of the - very human – dreams our ingenuity and inventiveness has managed to create? In the light of smartphone and GPS convergence, this workshop aims to explore and examine the implications of digital virtual technologies on our sense of place, our relationship with location(s) both real and virtual, and welcomes papers from any related disciplinary background on topics including, but not restricted to: • The impact of GPS app(s) on social, organisational, political and other activities • Theorising location in a smart world • Down-time / going ‘off-grid’ • Emerging technologies likely to impact our sense of place • Surveillance, privacy, trust – is it a generational issue? • Locating ‘location’ – the evolution of our sense of place in the history and philosophy of technology • Local / Global – are smartphone GPS systems a chainstore takeover of our traditional highstreet localisms? ABSTRACT: This article analyzes how new media are being appropriated within the Brazilian society. Exploring a range of new media practices—from the use of social network sites, microblogging, gaming, music, video production, and digital photography to youth media programs, LAN houses, and online communities—this article examines changes in the production, consumption, and distribution of new media in Brazil. Specifically, it explores different orientations around new media technology as they emerge in relation to government policies, (new) media industries and ordinary citizens interested in social interaction, entertainment, and information-gathering through new media technologies. I further reveal how three key concepts dominate attitudes and values around new media technologies: free, inclusive, and social. Connecting these values to theories of appropriation in the Latin American region, I conclude by exploring how new media practices reflect, produce, and reproduce Brazilian cultural norms among Brazilians.
