Thanks, Nicole Social Media/Social Computing Research Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media Michigan State University The Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media (TISM) at Michigan State University invites applications for a tenure stream faculty position in the area of social media/social computing at either the assistant or associate professor level. We seek a scholar whose research addresses social media and/or social computing practices, applications, or effects. An interest in mobile applications of social media is desirable. Teaching duties will include graduate and undergraduate courses in information and communication technologies and social media. The ability to teach courses in research methods, interactive media design, and/or human computer interaction is also desired. Successful assistant professor candidates will have peer-reviewed works to their credit and demonstrate promise of obtaining external funding to support their research. Associate professor candidates will have a track record of successful grant seeking and have averaged two peer-reviewed publications per year over several years. We encourage individuals from a diverse range of disciplinary and methodological traditions to apply. A PhD in a relevant discipline should be completed prior to the start of the appointment, expected to be August of 2012. The TISM department is home to a dynamic, interdisciplinary faculty internationally renowned for their cutting-edge research on the uses and implications of information and communication technologies. Our curricula address both the theoretical and practical aspects of media use, and our alumni have achieved positions of prominence in industry, government, and academia. Projects involving cross-disciplinary teams are actively pursued and encouraged. Current research foci of the department include social media, human computer interaction, digital games, ICT for development, e-commerce, communication economics and policy, the adoption and impacts of new media, and content design. Shelia - the listservs may be a complicated situation unless you or your students run them. You might want to ask the list moderators for permission if there aren't explicit rules about off topic discussion you can cite that apply to sharing a survey link. However, sending out a survey link via your own content streams (social networks) should be fine since they're yours. It might help grease the skids with your IRB if you point them to the Ethics Guide written by the AoIR Ethics Working Group: http://aoir.org/documents/ethics-guide/ Your IRB may just have no idea what guidelines to apply to online research if they've never done any of it. If you show them the Guide, and say "Here, these are the leading experts in the field and we're adhering to the standards they wrote" it might make the IRB feel more confident that there are rules and you're following them. Hi, all, From the regulatory side, but perhaps useful to bring to your IRBs attention--the Office for Human Research Protections has guidance around the use of social media specifically for clinical trials recruitment at http://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/policy/clinicaltrials.html I agree with Monica that asking for permissions from list owners is good practice and usually is not difficult to attain. (ANd I highly recommend Monica's article in IJIRE.) Also, having a site moderator or leader post a "sticky" or other note announcing the study on the top of a forum or on a wall, etc, is good entrance and usually IRBs are fine with that approach. Apologies for x-posting, distribute as appropriate -jh Cultures in virtual worlds A special issue of the New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia Guest-edited by Jeremy Hunsinger and Adrienne Massanari Virtual worlds (VW) embody cultures, their artefacts, and their praxes; these new and old spaces of imagination and transformation allow humans to interact in spatial dimensions. Within these spaces, culture manifests with the creation, representation, and circulation of meaningful experiences. But virtual worlds are not novel in that regard, nor should we make the mistake to assume that they are novel in themselves. Virtual experiences have been around in some respect for hundreds of years, and virtual worlds based in information technology have existed for at least 40 years. The current generation of virtual worlds, with roots over four decades old in studies of virtual reality, computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), sociology, cultural studies, and related topics, provide for rich and occasionally immersive environments where people become enculturated within the world sometimes as richly as the rest of their everyday lives. We seek research that encounters and investigates cultures in virtual worlds in its plurality and in its richness. To that end, we invite papers covering the breadth of the topic of cultures in and of virtual worlds. Some possible areas/approaches of inquiry: • How culture of virtual worlds affect relationships • VW interfaces and culture/s • Hidden subcultures/communities in virtual worlds • Ages and VW cultures • Emic and etic experiences of virtual worlds • Producing VW cultures • Traditional cultural/critical studies inquiries of VWs • Transnational or cosmopolitan cultures in/of VWs While all forms of scholarship and research are welcome, we prefer theoretically and empirically grounded studies. We seek a Special Issue that exemplifies methodological pluralism and scholarly diversity. The use of visual evidence and representations is also encouraged. We especially seek pieces that investigate virtual worlds that have received little scholarly attention. Submission guidelines This special issue is Guest-Edited by Jeremy Hunsinger (Wilfrid Laurier University) and Adrienne Massanari (Loyola University Chicago). Queries regarding the Special Issue should be directed to them at jhuns@– –vt.edu and amassanari@– –luc.edu. The Guest-Editors welcome contributions from both new researchers and those who are more well-established. Submitted manuscripts will be subject to peer review. Length of papers will vary as per disciplinary expectations, but we encourage articles of around 7000 words (longer articles may be possible, if warranted). Short discussion papers of around 3000 words on relevant subjects are also welcomed as ‘Technical Notes’.
