CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Proposal Submission Deadline: October 15, 2011 Online Credibility and Digital Ethos: Evaluating Computer-Mediated Communication - A book edited by Shawn Apostel and Moe Folk - To be published by IGI Global: http://bit.ly/oESA7c Introduction With the near ubiquity of smartphones, tablets, and laptops, acquiring and publishing online information has never been easier; however, increased access to consuming and producing digital information raises new challenges to establishing and evaluating online credibility. These challenges are important because they affect a broad range of meaning-making, both inside and outside of academia. For example, the events of the Arab Spring show that in the absence of what were traditionally seen as relatively reliable information sources, “unofficial” online sources deemed credible by a wide range of actors played a key role in successful uprisings. Objective of the Book Offering chapters written by scholars from across the disciplines and from different countries, this book will provide general approaches to evaluating the credibility of digital sources, specific advice for popular websites, and techniques useful for a wide variety of digital genres. Target Audience This book would be useful for a variety of academic disciplines, as students continue to utilize online sources in their research. Information literacy specialists would find useful the chapters which focus on particular types of popular sources like Wikipedia, Facebook, and iReports). Journalists and educators in the field of Mass Communication and Library Sciences would find the book useful in establishing protocols for approaching a wide variety of sources. Web designers and writers could use this book to establish a more credible online presence. However, we feel the target audience would be instructors of introductory level courses which involve research. Graduate students and academics could utilize certain chapters to establish a method for determining the credibility of a source they use for research purposes. Recommended Topics Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following: - General approaches to evaluating online credibility (typos/grammar, design/usability, advertisements, urls, links, contact info, search engine listing, use of stock photos, use of phone/address, date of publication, author, expertise, overall strategies, online universities). - Establishing and evaluating credibility with popular websites:(Ebay, YouTube, Facebook, Wikipedia, Twitter, Second life) - Establishing and evaluating credibility in a variety of digital genres: (Blogs, travel websites, online journals, restaurant reviews, emails, product reviews, online games, websites, discussion lists, iReports/news, app ratings, freeware ratings, avatars) We are particularly interested in submissions that situate how to evaluate and incorporate digital ethos and online credibility as part of researched arguments in various disciplines. While we expect many chapters will examine issues related to the displayed content of the sites in question, we also welcome chapters that evaluate the behind the scene effects on content such as research funding, domain holders, etc. Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before October 15, 2011 a 250-500 word chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of their proposed chapter. “Why Cyberbullying Rhetoric Misses the Mark"

I wanted to share some exciting news... The New York Times just published an op-ed that Alice Marwick and I wrote entitled “Why Cyberbullying Rhetoric Misses the Mark.” http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/23/opinion/why-cyberbullying-rhetoric-misses… It's based on a new paper that we wrote called "The Drama! Teen Conflict, Gossip, and Bullying in Networked Publics." The OII draft is available at SSRN: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1926349 Paper Abstract: While teenage conflict is nothing new, today’s gossip, jokes, and arguments often play out through social media like Formspring, Twitter, and Facebook. Although adults often refer to these practices with the language of “bullying,” teens are more likely to refer to the resultant skirmishes and their digital traces as “drama.” Drama is a performative set of actions distinct from bullying, gossip, and relational aggression, incorporating elements of them but also operating quite distinctly. While drama is not particularly new, networked dynamics reconfigure how drama plays out and what it means to teens in new ways. In this paper, we examine how American teens conceptualize drama, its key components, participant motivations for engaging in it, and its relationship to networked technologies. Drawing on six years of ethnographic fieldwork, we examine what drama means to teenagers and its relationship to visibility and privacy. We argue that the emic use of “drama” allows teens to distance themselves from practices which adults may conceptualize as bullying. As such, they can retain agency - and save face - rather than positioning themselves in a victim narrative. Drama is a gendered process that perpetrates conventional gender norms. It also reflects discourses of celebrity, particularly the mundane interpersonal conflict found on soap operas and reality television. For teens, sites like Facebook allow for similar performances in front of engaged audiences. Understanding how “drama” operates is necessary to recognize teens’ own defenses against the realities of aggression, gossip, and bullying in networked publics. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in technology studies, conducting research, supervising dissertations, and performing departmental, university, and public service. We particularly encourage applicants who can also teach undergraduate classes in media production or in new media production. Salary is competitive. Call for Participation ISPR 2011 International Society for Presence Research Annual Conference Edinburgh, Scotland October 26 - 28, 2011 Academics and practitioners interested in presence (short for telepresence) are invited to participate in the Annual International Conference on Presence, to be held in Edinburgh on October 26-28, 2011. The presence community comprises researchers in communication, computer science, psychology, entertainment, philosophy, the arts, education and other fields. Presence exists in two overlapping flavours - social presence and spatial presence. Social presence is the sense, the feeling and the experience of being with other people mediated by technologies such as teleconferencing, collaborative virtual environments, social networking, mobile communications and so on.
